PIL has sent be a bill for a broken wine glass

Yes, had to namechange.

Went to PIL' home last weekend, had a glass of wine and I accidentally dropped it. No big deal, they shrugged it off. I get on well with both FIL and MIL, have been with DH for 4 years now and we are having our first child in 4 months.

They're well off.. as in, VERY well off.. DP and I on the other hand live in a rented 3 bed semi-dettached property so definitely not as well off.

I didn't know at the time, but said wine glass apparently happens to be pretty high end. FIL has this morning sent me an e-mail saying that I can just transfer the £156 to him or buy the glass online. He even attached a link and included their address, should I not know it by now(!).

At first I thought it was a joke only to realise that these people have no sense of humor, so they obviously must be expect me to pay them ASAP. Haven't told DH yet. Really shocked at this as they are not known for being stingy.

AIBU not to pay this? I am tempted to buy a £20 glass off Amazon!

I would tell them that you would never have risked drinking from that glass if you had known it was that expensive and there is no way you can afford to pay for it.

Veterinari · 03/05/2018 15:02

I think if you serve your guests you take a risk that glassware might get broken. Their fault for using ridiculousl glasses!

TroubledLichen · 03/05/2018 15:03

WTAF. Did they get to be so wealthy by being so cheap?! Personally I’d buy them a set of plastic picnic wine glasses and send it with a note apologising for the breakage and saying you recommend plastic glasses so they don’t have to worry about any future accidents. In all seriousness though you should tell your DH about the email, I’d love to know what he thinks.

RandomDreams · 03/05/2018 15:03

Umm, I'd respond saying.

Get fucked you twat.

Redcrayons · 03/05/2018 15:06

I don’t think all my crockery and glassware altogether cost £156!

roses2 · 03/05/2018 15:06

if I broke an expensive item I’d offer to replace it....

Dvg · 03/05/2018 15:06

If I was your dh I would be embarrassed to have such CF parents

PinkHeart5914 · 03/05/2018 15:06

I have nice expensive glasses I get out for special times, although I might cry a little inside at seeing one broken in life accidents do happen and I can’t ever imagine sending someone a bill for one Shock

Maybeicanhelp · 03/05/2018 15:07

Tell him to claim on his house insurance Grin.

jammiebammie · 03/05/2018 15:08

You do get wine glasses that expensive - we were given a baccarat set for our wedding but omg I would never ever be serving anything in them, unless a v v special occasion! I had other very special glasses someone took from the back of the cupboard at Xmas and broke one - I obviously just said it didn’t matter and just quietly screamed on the inside - I wouldn’t dream of sending someone a bill for it though!
What a CF! Love pps reply of ‘oh how funny, what a good sense of humour’ but he doesn’t sound like the kind of person who would take that very well...

BitOutOfPractice · 03/05/2018 15:08

Shock
BlowAnne · 03/05/2018 15:10

I'd be tempted to send him one from poundland.

GnotherGnu · 03/05/2018 15:10

If he's serious, point out to him that that's what he (presumably) pays insurance premiums for.

pigmcpigface · 03/05/2018 15:11

£156!!?!?!

Tell your DH and leave him to deal with it. His parents, his problem.

My dad used to win Waterford Crystal as prizes in golfing competitions........they went on shelves as ornaments, no one ever actually used them

Shedmicehugh1 · 03/05/2018 15:12

Shock at the price and asking you to pay for it!

Things get broken, why give it to someone to use!?

chocatoo · 03/05/2018 15:12

Tell them to knock it off the inheritance...

MrsKoala · 03/05/2018 15:13

Oh no. This is why i never get out the good stuff - i've had my wedding china for 10 years and still never used it Grin We got out the glasses once and Mum broke 3 by her usual style of vigorous shaking in soapy water to wash up I just said 'oh dear, these things happen' and went into the hallway to cry (They were only £35 each tho so not up to £156 standard Shock )

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 03/05/2018 15:13

Morally he's completely BU and I wouldn't bother seeing much of them after that.

Can you claim on your own insurance? If you want to be factual, you broke it, so yes you should pay for it.

Either way, it's not looking good for your relationship with them in the future, how will you ever dare take a child in their home once they start moving let alone exploring

Trinity66 · 03/05/2018 15:13

if I broke an expensive item I’d offer to replace it....

It depends though, for something like a glass most people wouldn't expect them to be that expensive and if they were they should be warned and given the option not to risk using it

POPholditdown · 03/05/2018 15:14

Me too roses2

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 03/05/2018 15:14

Just say you didn't realise it was so expensive can they claim it on insurance as you're saving for their grandchild Hmm

TurquoiseDress · 03/05/2018 15:14

is it encrusted with diamonds??

sounds like a bonkers amount for just one wine glass!

All sounds very formal sending through link/quote, was nothing said at the time?

They sounds slightly bonkers
