PIL has sent be a bill for a broken wine glass

Yes, had to namechange.

Went to PIL' home last weekend, had a glass of wine and I accidentally dropped it. No big deal, they shrugged it off. I get on well with both FIL and MIL, have been with DH for 4 years now and we are having our first child in 4 months.

They're well off.. as in, VERY well off.. DP and I on the other hand live in a rented 3 bed semi-dettached property so definitely not as well off.

I didn't know at the time, but said wine glass apparently happens to be pretty high end. FIL has this morning sent me an e-mail saying that I can just transfer the £156 to him or buy the glass online. He even attached a link and included their address, should I not know it by now(!).

At first I thought it was a joke only to realise that these people have no sense of humor, so they obviously must be expect me to pay them ASAP. Haven't told DH yet. Really shocked at this as they are not known for being stingy.

AIBU not to pay this? I am tempted to buy a £20 glass off Amazon!

My SIL did the same - not to us, but to another guest. The glasses were only sold in pairs, and when it was pointed out, she said it was hard luck, paying for two was the penalty for breaking one. Hmm

strawberrypenguin · 03/05/2018 16:51

Wow. I never even knew you could glasses that were so expensive! Agree with everyone else though- talk about it with DH and present a united front. I wouldn't pay it and would consider taking DC to their house

CPtart · 03/05/2018 16:52

SIL once broke one of our champagne flutes on Christmas Day. It was part of a set we'd had for a wedding present, now discontinued. I was gutted but wouldn't have dreamt of billing her. Eventually found a replacement on EBay for about £70.
We use the cheap ones now.

AlpacaBag · 03/05/2018 16:53

What is is DH due home!!!??? We need to hear his response! x

junebirthdaygirl · 03/05/2018 16:53

Pay the money but don't go there again and don't bring your baby there. I'm not one for grudges but he has burnt his bridges now.
What next?

sciencemad · 03/05/2018 16:54

I had kind of the opposite of this with my mother.

PIL gave us crystal glasses as a wedding present.

My mother took a tumbler out of the display cabinet, took it up to bed and smashed it on the floor.

She told me the next day in a very offhand way. I explained it was a wedding present and that's why it was in the display cabinet and not in the cupboard where she knows damn well all the every day glasses are kept

I didn't ask her to replace it, as it was an accident. But she knew I was upset.

The next day she came home from the charity shop with 6 tatty champagne flutes and a look of triumph on her face and declared that she had replaced my broken glass.

to understand firstly why they aren't claiming on the insurance
The amount of the excess?
Because a claim will make their premiums go through the roof?

londonmummy1966 · 03/05/2018 16:55

At least that website has turned up a lovely gift you can ask PIL to buy for your dc when it arrives - £29k for e teddy bear....

www.modaoperandi.com/stalvey-gg17/alligator-teddy-bear?size=OS

Actually a shameless placemark....

Auntpetunia2015 · 03/05/2018 16:55

Madness ...who the hell has glasses worth that much each!!

DPotter · 03/05/2018 16:56

We’ll whatever you and your DH decide to do regards paying the bill, future visits etc, you know exactly what to buy them every Christmas from now to kingdom come - this cheapest wine glasses you can find, nicely wrapped of course!

Longdistance · 03/05/2018 16:57

It’s tough shit as far as I would be concerned.

It’s probably the reason they are rich... too busy taking from the poor.

DPotter · 03/05/2018 16:57

Sorry that We’ll, bloody auto-correct.......

LoafEater · 03/05/2018 16:57

I would send the money.

I would also never set foot in their house ever again.

DPotter · 03/05/2018 16:58

It did it again. Grrrrrrrr

maymai · 03/05/2018 16:58

Text Fil and say yes I've got your email, I wasn't sure if it was a joke, but now, you've texted I presume it isn't. I'll speak to DH and respond but in all seriousness I had no idea I'd accidentally broken such a ridiculously expensive glass and I can't help but wonder why you didn't explain that at the time.

TheSecretMole · 03/05/2018 16:59

Tell your DH to get home fast so we can know what he says!!

Laiste · 03/05/2018 17:00

Can't wait to hear what DH has to say.

Laiste · 03/05/2018 17:00

DP sorry.

NerdyBird · 03/05/2018 17:01

As he's already texted to see if you got the email I expect FIL thinks you will not tell DH, so getting DH to handle it or support you in not paying would put him on the back foot. I hope your DH does support you. If not then your card is marked that he may not have your back in other circs.

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 03/05/2018 17:02

Cheeky place mark

Purpleneonpinkunicorns · 03/05/2018 17:02

Placemarking so I can find out what your dp says, I'm speechless and that's not like me Shock

pieceofpurplesky · 03/05/2018 17:03

Ledkr · 03/05/2018 17:03
