To pay this much for my windows to be cleaned?

NinkyNonk1 · 03/05/2018 12:50

A family member arranged for a window cleaner to clean my windows at my request. He has cleaned 4 windows and 1 lot of patio doors. He's charged my £60 and been here 30 minutes.

Don't know if I'm being naive but I did not expect it to cost that much! I was only expecting £20 at most!

AIBU to think this isn't reasonable?

Just been quoted £15 per side of house re gutters - if that helps.

Also £12 for proper scrub of windows (no waving a pole at them nonesense). This is for a large 4bed with massive windows!

corcaithecat · 03/05/2018 14:03

What a chancer!
Definitely trying to pull a fast one. Do you think he was planning to give the relative £30 for putting him onto you?
Don't pay him more than £20.

Zzzz have you ever used a water fed pole system?

TheRealMcKenna · 03/05/2018 14:06

How does purified water make something more economical?

No idea - and I was a chemistry teacher! De-ionised (distilled) water is quite energy intensive to produce, so costs an awful lot compared to tap water. However, it dries without leaving any residue or water marks, so the cleaner doesn’t have to dry them.

Our window cleaners (team of 2) do the downstairs windows and two sets of 8ft french doors in the ‘traditional’ way. The upstairs ones are done with a pole and purified water. I can’t tell the difference in terms of cleanliness. We have 12 windows, 2 lots of French doors and one glazed front door and the whole lot costs £22. That’s in an expensive part of the S East.

I've checked and they have been cleared. This photo is the difference between mine and next doors. Unsure why he didn't have then clean that bathroom window!

You should have clarified the price before the work was done.

Lesson learned, I'd pay then not use him again.

PorkyPortia · 03/05/2018 14:09

Thank you higherupper that’s what I popped back to say
He can choose how much he wants to charge and people can choose if they want to pay that for his services
I think he has taken OP for a ride but it’s too late now

AnneOfCleavage · 03/05/2018 14:12

He can't have done a thorough job if he's done outside and inside cleaning of gutters and windows too especially as he missed the velux windows.

I know some window cleaners charge £15-20 for a full house of windows if it's done monthly or more regularly so maybe he charged £60 as a one off. He should have clarified with you the price first though especially as a friend/family member recommended him and you know how much he charges them.

Singlenotsingle · 03/05/2018 14:15

We've got 3 sets of patio doors and a fro nt door, plus 9 ordinary windows. I pay £7.50

greathat · 03/05/2018 14:16

£120/hour for cleaning windows?! I'm in the wrong job

SciFiFan2015 · 03/05/2018 14:18

I pay £6 for 8 windows and 2 doors.

cad186 · 03/05/2018 14:24

We pay £11 every month for 11 windows, 2 doors and 1 set of patio doors. We were quoted about £60 for the gutters to be cleared, fascias cleaned etc so don't think £60 sounds unreasonable.

Willyoujustbequiet · 03/05/2018 14:25

£5 for 4 bed detached including patio doors. I can't believe what some people pay!

Sonders · 03/05/2018 14:27

I pay £5 for the front of the house (2 windows and door) or £15 for the whole thing including and conservatory & gutters, £60 is maaaadness!

Bluelady · 03/05/2018 14:36

We pay a tenner for 12 windows. They really saw you coming, OP.

Macarena1990 · 03/05/2018 14:45

We pay £10 for 8 windows - London

DameSylvieKrin · 03/05/2018 14:50

I don’t imagine it’s anything like the London weighting putting the price up, more likely very local supply and demand factors. My parents live in a small very wealthy home counties town with a single window cleaning business and pay £30 for a two up two down.
If you know he didn’t do all the windows he said he did, I‘d be paying a lot less and I‘d assume the guttering wasn’t done.

offupop · 03/05/2018 15:28

Sure he didn't say £16?!

NinkyNonk1 · 03/05/2018 15:51

It's definitely written on the card £60.00! I even put it even the text and he said this was correct 😂 I'm only paying him £20 so he can swing for the rest!

OP posts:
PorkyPortia · 03/05/2018 16:28

why are you only paying him 1/3 of his invoice ?

adaline · 03/05/2018 16:46

He's done the work - you can't just choose to pay him a third because you think it's too expensive!

lovesugarfreejelly63 · 03/05/2018 17:05

Get your family member to cough up the rest!

Rudgie47 · 03/05/2018 17:07

You can refuse to pay when someone is trying to rip you off like that.Theres nothing he can do.

Mumto2two · 03/05/2018 17:07

Did you actually ask for the gutters to be cleaned? If not, then I would pay the going rate for your windows and say thank you but no thanks for the rest! If you did ask, then a price really should have been agreed in advance, so some payment for this is rightfully due. Get a couple of ball park quotes in your area, and counter offer based on that. Lesson learned OP, hope you sort it out!
