To pay this much for my windows to be cleaned?

A family member arranged for a window cleaner to clean my windows at my request. He has cleaned 4 windows and 1 lot of patio doors. He's charged my £60 and been here 30 minutes.

Don't know if I'm being naive but I did not expect it to cost that much! I was only expecting £20 at most!

AIBU to think this isn't reasonable?

It's a townhouse? So how could he have done the guttering and not done the top floor windows? Either he can get up there or he can't. Did you see him go that high?

mrsm43s · 03/05/2018 13:17

I'm in the SE,and got a quote for a 3 bed 1930s with loft conversion (velux) - £40

My windows are still dirty.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 03/05/2018 13:17

that's insane!
I pay £18 for all the windows in a 5 bed house.

milkmoustache · 03/05/2018 13:18

If he had cleared out the guttering properly, there would be plenty of debris on the ground. What's the point of cleaning the outside of the guttering?

blueskyinmarch · 03/05/2018 13:19

I pay £27 for mine but i have a big house with loads of fiddly windows and i live somewhere quite windy so they get very dirty. £60 is ridiculous for 4 windows and patio doors. Are you sure he didn't mean £6?

Loonoon · 03/05/2018 13:19

I'm in London and a four bedroom house with two sets of patio doors costs £20 including cleaning the frames.

divafever99 · 03/05/2018 13:21

£2 for 3 windows at the front. Recently had guttering cleared for £15, front and back in average size new build semi.

MizCracker · 03/05/2018 13:21

What a crook.

And if you didn't agree that he'd clean the guttering, he had no right to do it and demand payment.

I have a small 3 bed semi and pay £15 front and back - which is pricey enough IMO.

MiddleAgedMe · 03/05/2018 13:21

£7.50 for 10 windows here. You're being conned!

MeMyShelfandIkea · 03/05/2018 13:21

Has he cleaned the inside of the windows as well?

FASH84 · 03/05/2018 13:21

£10 including 2 big bays, bi-folds, glass kitchen door full length , one additional very large window and 6 regular Windows and we're in the south East. Did he clean them with his tongue? Guttering DH usually does, although my dad did it last time as he was waiting for a tradesman for us and was 'bored'. But we had a flyer through the door offering guttering clearance for £15. It took him 40 minutes so it's not like it's a time/labour charge.

PlumsGalore · 03/05/2018 13:22

£15 for a four bed semi with conservatory. all my windows are mullions so lots of faffy little windows. West Yorkshire.

NinkyNonk1 · 03/05/2018 13:23

He definitely meant £60. I just text the number to say that I wasn't prepared to pay that much when he does more for a family member for less than £20.

Unfortunately I didn't see him clean the guttering as I was upstairs with my poorly DD. That's how I know he didn't clean my sky light windows. It says to pay him by bank transfer but I think I'll just text to say I'm only paying £20!

We pay a £1 per window and £2 for patio doors. So £12 for our house!

borlottibeans · 03/05/2018 13:24

If he couldn't get to the top floor windows to clean them how did he do the guttering? Of course you can't check that he did.

We pay £5 for 6 windows (2 of which are tiny). Once we paid an extra tenner for him to clear out the gutters for us too. Even allowing for cost of living differences I think you've been seriously ripped off here.

I might expect a higher cost if he'd brought a cherry picker to do your top floor!

chickenowner · 03/05/2018 13:24

23 windows, we pay £20!

LapdanceShoeshine · 03/05/2018 13:25

Mid terrace with 3 bathroom windows, 3 kitchen windows, French doors (one pane) with top opener, 1 square bay (3 windows), fanlight, & 3 bedroom windows.

All windows are mock sash, so that's 28 bits of glass, of varying sizes.

Front & back take about 10 mins each I reckon (have never timed them Grin) plus they have to lug the ladders about & change the water.

£7.50 in Lancs.

I've no idea what effect London weighting should have - obviously the people concerned have got to live there but people who work in eg supermarkets only get a small amount extra?

otoh the blokes who fitted our guttering came back recently when it was overflowing & I thought it needed adjusting - turned out it was just full of muck. Total length is about 40' (round rear extension) & they charged £35 for emptying it out (my bucket & my rubber glove!) but then they are a bit specialist. For just some random handyman to do it I'd not expect to pay more than about £20.

Scotinoz · 03/05/2018 13:26

£60 😧

I pay £22 for 12 windows plus 4 huge bays.

kaytee87 · 03/05/2018 13:26

Jesus I have sunroom windows floor to ceiling, plus 8 other windows including 4 large bays and I only pay £12.

NoSquirrels · 03/05/2018 13:27

We pay £20 every 3 months - 17 windows (3 very large) plus patio doors. It’s one of those water hose in a van jobs and does the frames etc too. They do a good job but I still think it’s expensive!

PlumsGalore · 03/05/2018 13:27

if he had cleaned your gutters he would have been here a lot longer than half an hour and you would have seen him with a bucket collecting all the dirt and probably a few splattered decomposed leaves and mud on the path. £120 an hour, can I have a job?

Narnia72 · 03/05/2018 13:29

I'd send him a message saying "I want a job! I've never heard of a window cleaner getting £120 an hour"

Seriously though, don't pay. Send him a text back stating that he was there from xx to yy, during that time he cleaned x number of windows and the gutter and from consultations with other window cleaners in the area you will pay the going rate, which is £15.

Next time though, for any tradesman, agree a price up front! Saves hassle all round.

FWIW I live in Herts, and my window cleaner does ground floor and first floor externals for £12, conservatory inside and out costs an extra £14, he does the attic windows and all external and inside windows including all my mirrors and internal doors for £20. Takes him about an hour and a half, but he talks a lot!

theeyeofthestormchaser · 03/05/2018 13:30

Is this the first clean? Haven't they been done for a while? Window cleaners usually charge more for the first clean...

But didn't you talk about price first? Did you ask for him to do the guttering? And how's he reached the guttering if he hasn't done the 2nd floor windows?

TeeniefaeTroon · 03/05/2018 13:31

We have 3 sets of patios doors, a sun room and 10 sets of double windows and I'm £12

Purpleneonpinkunicorns · 03/05/2018 13:36

Bloody hell we pay £6 .. surely even if he did the guttering ( which I doubt in the space of 30mins + cleaning your Windows) that a ' professional' wouldnt charge that much.. shocking day light robbery.
