To pay this much for my windows to be cleaned?

A family member arranged for a window cleaner to clean my windows at my request. He has cleaned 4 windows and 1 lot of patio doors. He's charged my £60 and been here 30 minutes.

Don't know if I'm being naive but I did not expect it to cost that much! I was only expecting £20 at most!

AIBU to think this isn't reasonable?

I live in a townhouse also. My window cleaner does all 3 floors, plus skylights for the obscene sum of £15 Wink

MadeleineMaxwell · 03/05/2018 13:40

£7 here for the outsides of all our windows (2 bays, 2 patio doors, 3 skylights, 4 windows) in Manchester.

pigmcpigface · 03/05/2018 13:41

£8.50 for my entire house... including huge sliders! £60 is CRAZY!

NinkyNonk1 · 03/05/2018 13:41

Yes he was asked to do the guttering but I'm doubtful that it's been cleaned. It just looks like the outside of its been washed to look cleaner than next door.

No they haven't been done for a while but even so I wouldn't have expected it to be that much!

My 5 windows and door pane is £4.50. Cleaning gutters every other year is £16 and they check before they do it.

PorkyPortia · 03/05/2018 13:45

if that's how much he charges then you should pay
its a ridiculous amount of money I agree but you should have got a quote
just don't use again and tell him why

twinkletoedelephant · 03/05/2018 13:48

Just cancelled my window cleaner 8 windows £20. He hasjust got a new broom cleaner thing and kind of sweeps the brush over the windows timed him last time .... Just under 6 minutes.

Left windows dripping wet and not bloody clean.

Didn't mind the cost when ladders were involved and the job was done well. Now it seems a bit of a pisstake.

I have said when he goes back to actually cleaning windows I will have him back

llangennith · 03/05/2018 13:48

£120 an hour!!!

MamaBerg · 03/05/2018 13:52

I pay £10 for a 3 storey house including velux windows and patio doors. £60 is ridiculous!!

higherupper · 03/05/2018 13:53

Twinkletoe the water fed pole system actually cleans your windows more economically as only purified water is used. There is no need to dry the windows after.

op if he has charged £60 that is what you need to pay. You cannot pay just £20 because you think that is a fair price!

justforthisthread101 · 03/05/2018 13:54

That's very expensive. My window cleaner does 11 windows (two of which are big bays) and a set of patio doors and charges me £17. Not the best but saves me from being shamed by my MIL. He takes about 20 minutes /half an hour. That's just outside though. Did your cleaner clean inside too?

5 bed with conservatory £15

bonzo77 · 03/05/2018 13:55

@Aridane I’m in (N) London. 5 bed house end of terrace. Windows and frames front and back including French windows at back and front door £24. £10 for gutter clearing. This seems to be relatively cheap as I had one quote for about £100!!! Window cleaner could not reach 5 windows in the loft conversion, which are 2 of the bedrooms and one bathroom. 2 of them we can do ourselves from the inside because of how they open. So I guess that’s the price for 3 bed really.

PoisonousSmurf · 03/05/2018 13:56

I'm surprised that any window cleaners still use ladders as it's deemed risky to use them...

Sorry, I meant to add that this was the first clean in a couple of years and they were terrible. Might be less for a regular clean.

What do you mean 'if he has charged £60 that's what you need to pay'?

That is ridiculous. So on that basis if he charges £1000 she needs to pay.

It's unfortunate a price wasn't agreed before and there's a lesson for all of us but that doesn't mean you then have to fork out what's being asked no questions asked.

OP - do you live in a particularly wealthy area? I am fairly certain from personal experience that some taxi drivers in my area charge more for the same distances depending on which end of town the job is in.

CowesTwo · 03/05/2018 13:58

I pay £7 for 7 windows.

higherupper · 03/05/2018 13:59

Zzz that's all that's used, pure water. No chemicals or detergents

NanooCov · 03/05/2018 14:00

If he's genuinely cleaned the gutters then I think £60 is reasonable. £10 for windows and £50 for gutters. But my cleaner takes before and after pics of the gutters with a camera on a pole, otherwise you've no way of telling if the jobs been done.

higherupper · 03/05/2018 14:00

Wings if you go to a shop and buy a loaf of bread that has a price ticket of £1.50 you cannot pay £1 can you ?

NanooCov · 03/05/2018 14:00

Oh and he wouldn't complete all that in 30 mins so think he's having a laugh.

ConferencePear · 03/05/2018 14:02

It must depend on where you live.
I have three ordinary sized upstairs windows plus one which needs a 'bendy' ladder.
Three ordinary downstairs windows plus one large kitchen window and two sets of patio doors.
It costs me £8 he does a good job and I've never timed him.

FinnJuhl · 03/05/2018 14:02

My MIL's estate has someone going round 'cleaning' all the retired folks guttering for £60 a pop. She's happy to pay for this once a year, so fair enough.

It when they find supposed extra work and the costs start mounting that I would worry.
