Hi, first time poster/long-time lurker..

We got 2 'siamese' cats from a local rescue, about 6 weeks ago. They're brothers, about 15 months in age. They follow me around the house and make yappy noises. They try and jump on stuff, but fall down and are in fact generally pretty clumsy. They get really excited when there is cheese in the room. They don't understand how 90% of cat toys work, and look genuinely confused when we try to play with them, or try to show them how the treat (dispensing) ball works. I'm starting to wonder if they're dogs. Or aliens... AIBU?

Our cat loves cheese and cake! The first day we had him as a kitten he tried to swipe a tuna salad roll from DHs hand. Two days ago he laid on the patio and watched two fat pigeons eat my newly laid grass seed. He also falls off stuff quite frequently and tries to suck my earlobe when I'm asleep. I love him.

FASH84 · 01/05/2018 23:46

He also plays fetch and carries around his favourite toy and takes it to bed with him (our bed incidentally), it's a black cat glove puppet he's had for seven years now, he's a narcissist...

I have a question.
Have Siamese cats change in the last 40 years?
I ask as we had a beautiful Siamese boy when I was little but he didn’t look like the cats in the ops picture.

cozietoesie · 01/05/2018 23:57

They have. They've become more .......attenuated..... and have had some 'defects' (cross-eyes and tail kinks) bred out of them.

happymumof4crazykids · 02/05/2018 00:37

@Walkingdeadfangirl I was genuinely surprised that a cat could be vegetarian hence the question. I wondered if it was because of a medical reason!
Now you have answered my question I'm actually shocked that you would force your choice not to eat meat on an animal that is a carnivore Hmm

YouCantGetHereFromThere · 02/05/2018 01:16

I feel that my cat is slightly defective. He's clearly a Maine Coon mix (has all the characteristics but is quite small), but he hates cold weather and refuses to go out in the snow.

He was born in Fort Kent, Maine - I really thought he'd be a bit less snowflakey about snowflakes.

CollyWombles · 02/05/2018 01:30

I had a gorgeous snow leopard Bengal. He was most definitely a dog. He was obsessed with pencils, carried socks about in his mouth and had meow conversations often with me. He most enjoyed lying in wait for any of us to walk past him, then launching himself into our legs class and all. If I ever get a cat again, it will be another Bengal.

agnurse · 02/05/2018 01:40

Our little kitten Gatsby has apparently decided I'm his mum. (He was rejected by his mother and hand-reared and syringe-fed by friends of ours. We adopted him from them.) He has learned that when my alarm goes off he can come for a cuddle. He won't get anything if he tries to wake me up. The other morning I was walking away after petting him and he pawed my arm. I petted him. I went to leave and he pawed me again. I petted him again. I went to leave and he pawed me again. This time I told him that was enough and he'd already gotten lots of attention and Mum had to go now. He's probably my favourite of our current three.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 02/05/2018 01:51

happymumof4crazykids Guess we will have to agree to disagree, over time all species evolve, including cats. There is no law that says they have to eat meat. And as many people know, they dont have to. We have moved on from the middle ages.

Scribblegirl · 02/05/2018 08:45

Our boy is part moggie part Siamese and he has the cutest personality, he's such a character. Before we got him I didn't know quite how vocal Siamese were and he's definitely louder than I expected (I've not slept past 8am in the 18 months we've had him except when we're away from home 😴). Wouldn't trade him for the world though. He's super agile, an amazing hunter and so attached to DH and I - definitely thinks he's a dog.

Scribblegirl · 02/05/2018 08:45

(Actually, I'm pretty sure he thinks he's a human)

MyotherUsernameisaPun · 02/05/2018 08:47

Siamese cats are a species all of their own! They are definitely more like dogs than cats IME Grin

AgnesSkinner · 02/05/2018 09:28

There seems to be different types of Siamese - the old fashioned type are bigger and heavier whilst the modern type is smaller and slighter with more accentuated features.

I like the story that traditionally the tail kink was so that the queen of Siam could hang her rings on her cat’s tail whilst she bathed in a stream.

Cheese is ignored in this house unless it can be stolen - Siamese seem to be awful thieves. We have to hide the butter too.

Ours likes to steal things and hide them under the edge of rugs - plastic snippets, elastic bands, hair bands, emery boards are a particular favourite.

And she is definitely the clumsiest cat I have ever been owned by - most of my furniture seems to have claw marks where she has struggled to clamber up.

poobumwee · 02/05/2018 10:27

Agnes one of our orientals loves emery boards too! so funny

Skarossinkplunger · 02/05/2018 10:38

I used to have a part Siamese who loved cheese, sponge cake and melon.

He was also so vocal (apparently a Siamese trait) that when he was in the vets being neutered they rang me begging me to pick him up early as he was doing thier heads in!

MereDintofPandiculation · 02/05/2018 10:59

My DSH likes emery boards too - it's the sound of them. And velcro. Painful when he's using his teeth to try to undo a watch strap.

AgnesSkinner · 02/05/2018 11:03

My Siamese likes to chew on emery boards for some reason - it must really set her teeth on edge judging by the faces she pulls every time. I don’t think she’s the sharpest tool in the box.

pigpoglet · 02/05/2018 11:13

I grew up with 3 Siamese cats along with lots of other mogs . The Siamese are more aloof and different to the mogs. I loved my Siamese girl , she adored me and followed me everywhere !

Scribblegirl · 02/05/2018 12:56

@skarossinkplunger Our boy managed to get himself upgraded at the cattery from a regular pen to a duluxe one. When we went to pick him up I thanked the cattery owner for the upgrade - they looked me in the eye and went ''Don't thank me, the duluxe pens are further from the house.'' Blush

Isn't it about 1/3 of cats that aren't lactose intolerant? Bengals, Abyssinians, Burmese, Bengals - all dog like, make funny noises etc.

Lovely cats op!

Beamur · 02/05/2018 15:05

One of my cats is an Oriental. He is the best cat/dog ever, funny, affectionate, demanding, noisy and clumsy (yet looks so elegant). As a kitten he would play fetch and took a shine to one of DD's toys that he would search her room for.
He snuggles and cuddles and wraps his tail around your arm, he is charming and friendly and even gets on well with other cats. I can't imagine not having a cat like this in my life!

cozietoesie · 02/05/2018 15:20

My past cats have not been lactose intolerant. (I caught on by the things that they thieved and the (lack of) aftermath.) This one (PB) Well - I just don't know. Although I'm taking no chances. Smile

pigpoglet · 02/05/2018 16:15

I have two half bengals now and one is very very dog like . The other is more cat like but still fairly affectionate .. the dog cat one is totally brilliant .. I can't understand how anyone doesn't like cats ( I get the shit in your garden bit but that aside ) as they are such great fun!

Babieseverywhere · 02/05/2018 16:26

We have inside litter trays for our two older gentlemen cats. Therefore no poo in garden either !

One of our cats, like to sleep on my chests (aka norks)..he literally lies across me and then falls asleep. He is very vocal and has one meow for his fellow cat and another for us humans.

Our other cat insists on belly rubs all the time and will fall asleep lying on his back with his belly upwards...which most cats wouldn't do as it makes them vulnerable. But our cat doesn't care.

Our boys have a bromance going and often curl up together to go to sleep. So sweet. I am terrified of losing one as they are getting older and so devoted to each other.
