Is this groom a CF?

I usually love a good CF thread and ones mixed in with weddings are always great. But now that it's happening to us I'm not sure what to do!

We went to a wedding at the weekend for one of DH's colleagues. They had an amazon gift list so DH ordered something from there. It came in quite a big box and the shape of the actual gift meant that we had to wrap the box with the gift inside.

When we arrived we noticed that nobody else had presents, thought nothing of it but people kept commenting and saying "We just got them vouchers/money." We asked DH's colleague, the groom, where to put it and he was quite surprised and said "We weren't expecting gifts. Thank you, can you put it by the post box for cards?"

So we did, forgot all about it and enjoyed the day and night. Towards the end of the night we stood near the post box and I pointed out that ours was still the only present. DH laughed it off and said "Looks like we're the only ones who saw the gift list!" Left a short while after and thought nothing more about the gift.

DH got a message last night from groom saying "Thanks for coming on Saturday and for the gift. We had a bit of a last minute change and decided to ask for money towards the honeymoon instead of what we'd put on the gift list. Can we arrange to send it back and just get the money for it instead? I can pass it back next week when I'm back in work. Really appreciate the thought but definitely think we need a holiday after the stress of wedding planning."

The gift cost £70. DH didn't reply but showed it to me. I was just shocked at how cheeky it was. I'm leaving it up to him to sort because I have only met the couple a handful of times. I do just feel a bit stupid turning up with this huge box when everyone else seemed to be told to give money/vouchers. Dh said this was the first he'd heard of giving money and he has no problem giving money but feels asking if we can return it and give him money instead is a bit out of order.

Should we just return it and leave it at that or does anyone have any choice words or phrases we can reply with?!

Youve made the mirror op

SaveBandit · 03/05/2018 21:58

Oh gosh! So I have! Hi to all the mirror readers
Grin

DH has sent Groomzillo a message. He's basically said he had no idea that they had asked for money and feels like a bit of a tit for turning up with a present. He also said it's a shame they didn't want the gift because it was something he had literally said he needed a couple of weeks ago. He then said that he is happy to arrange a return and will give him cash instead but let him know that as we paid for some of if with amazon vouchers he would not be getting the full amount that we spent.

I have no idea how amazon returns work but DH has said that he will just arrange for a return and then get groomzillo to send it off.

I'm now concerned that Groomzillo is going to keep the gift rather than return it because he won't be getting £70 back Hmm

And then you'll know he's definitely a twat.

That is exactly what he will do or hear about it from some one at work/in the paper and then make it all out to be a joke that's how people like this operate.

acatcalledjohn · 03/05/2018 22:42

Shouldn't have told groomzillo he wouldn't be getting the full amount. Because he won't now return the gift.

Personally I believe he should have learnt the hard way by getting either no money or a token amount.

He's an ungrateful cockwomble.

Motoko · 04/05/2018 01:09

Just make sure that he doesn't get sent any money until it's been returned and you have been refunded.

LimaCharlieHotelPapa · 04/05/2018 10:27

Just in case you didn't know/will cause problems OP, did you know this thread is now in the Daily Mirror? It came up in my Google suggested articles this morning Confused

Oops! Just read a couple of the other replies lol! Ignore me! Blush

Well, I think he probably IS going to keep it. Why did your DH do that? Confused Honestly, he is not helping.

browneyes77 · 04/05/2018 14:43

It’s even made the Birmingham Mail...🙄

YearOfYouRemember · 04/05/2018 15:05

If the groom doesn't return the gift then what's the issue? He won't have the cash.

TomRavenscroft · 04/05/2018 15:26

No, but neither will the OP!

TammySwansonTwo · 04/05/2018 16:44

I would have gone with “Classic. Good one, Groomzillo. Can you imagine if people were really that fucking rude?! Enjoy the toaster!”

TomRavenscroft · 04/05/2018 16:54

That's good, Tammy!

Smeddum · 04/05/2018 16:59

Tammy has it nailed!

Aeroflotgirl · 04/05/2018 16:59

A bit daft of your dh, shoukd have kept Schtum, and given him £20 instead.

bimbobaggins · 04/05/2018 17:54

If the groom decides to keep the original gift then you are no worse off than you started with and it saves you having to return it. I’d say that was a satisfactory outcome

Nicky34 · 04/05/2018 21:10

Hi, I really liked your DH’s reply. It was honest and to the point and really was teaching the groom a lesson about gift receiving.

I hope the groom does keep the gift and he uses it and every time he does he’s reminded of this and the lesson he learnt.
Then your DH and you can get on with things and not worry about having to arrange a return amazon parcel or when the refund will come in yadda yadda .... (your DH asked the groom to let him know, so if he hears nothing he can assume he’s keeping it!).

ferntwist · 04/05/2018 22:36

Excellent reply by your DH.

Can I just say I love love love the name Groomzillo? It’s about time men were given a few nicknames like this, just like women. Can we think of some more?

Daifuku9 · 04/05/2018 22:54

Now if I hear the song “Godzilla” I’ll hear in my head, “go, go, Groomzilla!”

Definitely make sure he returns it before your husband gives him anything else.

Wonder if the cash is really worth the embarrassment of the coworkers now knowing?

Unbelievable how people act over their weddings/honeymoons/gifts!

Daifuku9 · 04/05/2018 22:54

*Groomzillo

rumbelina · 05/05/2018 08:38

I think that reply was great because now whatever the groom does he looks like an enormous twat. He can’t come out of this well either way

expatinscotland · 05/05/2018 11:57

Please give him only £20 if he decides to still return it. He really doesn't deserve FA.

niccyb · 06/05/2018 20:00

I think they are being very cheeky. They asked for gifts and changed their minds at the last minute without informing you. That’s not your fault.
If that’s how they are gonna be, give them £20 and sell the present on EBAY!

bloomsburyer · 06/05/2018 20:03

I'd definitely return it but just give them £20.
