To have Kate Middleton as my new role model

Or the Duchess of Cambridge for those who get uptight about her name.

She is so poised. Takes everything in her stride (even giving birth). She looks genuinely happy and in love and in control.

Operation Kate starts May 1st so I've got two more days to slob around on Mumsnet

I shudder at the alternative to a royal being Head of State. President Blair , May or Corbyn anyone?

Such a lazy argument. For what it's worth, the Irish have a super track record in voting for presidents who have achieved significantly in their own right.

But you're right, Charles is very accomplished at spending state money on private jets

lalalaloopy · 29/04/2018 13:18

What normal 30 something gives birth & pulls on an outfit like that, it’s so dated!

The dress was lovely

In your opinion, maybe it’s a generational thing.

Numbkinnuts · 29/04/2018 13:21

I'd say that as Charles has been trained to be head of all those things since he was born and will have extensive knowledge on them I'd say he meets the qualifications.

Agree.

If we did go down the route of President there will still be the 'privileged elite' who will medal and influence power. Funding campaigns and having their own little empire. Kennedy family comes to mind.

biscuitraider · 29/04/2018 13:22

the work she does through charities and raising awareness, will have far greater impact than what the vast majority of us do
Yeah, we're just the suckers who go out to work and pay tax to keep them all. That has a far bigger impact than anything they ever do.

lalalaloopy · 29/04/2018 13:24

Numbkinnuts I completely get that but do you not think there may a way of doing her role & looking a bit more modern?

I personally think it alienates the younger generations and actually makes them less relevant.

Yorkshirebetty · 29/04/2018 13:24

That picture of Kate in trackies was taken before she was married. She has a degree in Art History and knows about the power of image. Every outfit studied and controlled, every photo with a subtext. She is steering the course for William and her children.

Numbkinnuts · 29/04/2018 13:24

Such a lazy argument

Lazy arguments on both sides. But hey this is Mumsnet where a comment MUST be backed up by facts and heavily weighted evidence.

But I think Megan represents my friends and I much more so what do I know 😁

LaurieMarlow · 29/04/2018 13:27

I'd say that as Charles has been trained to be head of all those things since he was born and will have extensive knowledge on them I'd say he meets the qualifications.

And actual achievement in these spheres would say otherwise. He had a chance at a high profile military career and he didn't exactly excel (just 7 years of active service. I think Wills has clocked up more than that).

When has he ever shown any knowledge or interest in the church? I can't think of a single instance.

Those actually qualified to lead these institutions will be rolling around laughing at the idea that Charles has anything to contribute.

The Windsors are squeaky clean of course, they'd never do anything underhand to keep the monarchy going of course. Hmm
The big difference being with a president, we get to vote him out.....and why are we looking at American style presidencies, Ireland is the one to look at surely.

How would you like to see the future queen and mother to heir of throne come out to the awaiting world press ?

lalalaloopy · 29/04/2018 13:35

Perhaps a smart trouser suit or trousers & top as other royals have.

SerenDippitty · 29/04/2018 13:36

Yes@LaurieMarlow not just a lazy argument but an incredibly arrogant one. Plenty of functioning democracies manage perfectly well without a monarch.

SleepingStandingUp · 29/04/2018 13:40

lalalaloopy I was 12 weeks post partum before I got to do the walk of pride and haven't a clue what I wore bit surely a smock style dress is far more comfy than a trouser suit. And given that anything vaguely snug around her stomach would have generated comments about how she's showing off how slim she is and trying to fat shame normal mums AND SIMULTANEOUSLY how fat she still is and what work outs she'll need to do to look like "normal" again I'd doubly think a loose dress is more sensible.

I'm a few months younger than her, I thought the dress was nice. Ok she's poetically not gonna be able to breast feed workout stripping but if I knew my picture was going to be splashed around the world, something sensible, not clingy and simple is fine.

lalalaloopy · 29/04/2018 13:44

I never said anything about looking comfortable my criticism is that she looks old fashioned. She could wear a loose blouse over trousers. Plus she’ll be back to normal by the wedding Im sure anyway so the pressure argument isn’t really relevant.

If there's one thing I want to educate DD (14) about it's eating and exercising for lifelong health (touch wood) and staying slim

Confused
SleepingStandingUp · 29/04/2018 13:50

What I don't get is - the Middletons seem to have a good work ethic. Ok so they had his money to help propel them but she worked as an air hostess, they still had to put work into the business etc. All this have the kids a brilliant education.

So why would you not want to pass that work ethic on?

Kate graduated a year behind me and married two years before me but even if she have up work upon engagement she could have worked for 6 years? Carole seems quite savvy - How did she not have the perspicacity to say to Kate - ok, you're waiting for a ring but you'll get much better PR if you're seen to actually work for a few years first. Doesn't have to be anything heavy but if Beatrice and Eugenie can do it, so can you. Shift your butt missy!
Pippa has done similarly so its not even a princess in waiting thing. She's done a few bits of work given to her for being Kate's bridesmaid with that bum bit its all been terrible. She's also waited for a ring and faffed about lots.

If they'd married and had babies young you could say well there wasn't time but Kate was (?)29 and Pippa similar when they got married.

Maybe it's working class naivety but why would you pay for that education and not encourage them to work??

southeastdweller · 29/04/2018 13:56

Maybe it's working class naivety but why would you pay for that education and not encourage them to work??

Maybe they did but Kate and Pippa chose another direction.

SleepingStandingUp · 29/04/2018 13:56

she'll be back to normal by the wedding so the pressure arguement isn't really relevant
She'll be in Spanx and something flowing for the wedding!

It's the sort of thing we wore in the 80's
Omg flash back to mine and my sister's marching dresses in different colours that were basically like this. I'd have been 6-8 ish so just about 80's. Maybe it was her favourite childhood dress recreated.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 29/04/2018 13:58

Love how everyone thinks her ‘life of privilege ‘ means she doesn’t have any problems

Didn’t exactly work out for Diana did it ?

SleepingStandingUp · 29/04/2018 13:59

southeastdweller one child not bothering to work and living off the bank of mum and dad maybe, but both daughters doing it and the son working suggests otherwise. They've also clearly financed that lifestyle choice, Kate and Pippa have hardly been living in austerity awaiting a rich saviour

willynillypie · 29/04/2018 14:01

she looks old fashioned

Are dresses old fashioned now!? Wtf is wrong with wearing a dress? I am in my 20s and I much prefer dresses to trousers. I don't understand how trousers are more modern or acceptable than a dress and it's a very bizarre thing to judge her on since she wears trousers or jeans and tops often.

SilverySurfer · 29/04/2018 14:03

I'm not a fan but have to admire her determination, she caught the man she chased, hook, line and sinker. I hope she is happy.
