Houses without a bath tub

A lot of houses seem to only have showers these days and no bath tub.

This is a definite no no for me, I like baths and surely it would be hard to wash children with just a shower.

It’s so frustrating so see a nice house with just a shower. Sure, could always put a bath in but not something I wouldn’t want to redecorate the bathroom immediately after moving in.

Would you buy a house without a tub?

I absolutely would not buy a house without a tub! I won’t even stay in hotels that only offer showers.

PearlClutchingOldie · 28/04/2018 22:22

I'd buy a house without a tub, but it would have a tub installed as soon as possible

WhyBird2k · 28/04/2018 22:27

Yes we bought a house without a tub. And my DH is a bath devotee. 3 years later still not put one in yet. It's a real pain with a toddler! I personally wouldn't write off a house because of lack of bath tub but we certainly negotiated down the asking price. Vendors were reluctant to drop the asking price as they had only just renovated the bathroom with a large accessible shower...perfect for them as a retired couple but not for us. So if you like the house then negotiate on the basis that a bath tub should be standard.

BoomBoomsCousin · 28/04/2018 22:27

I prefer showers and would rather have walk-in showers than a bath. Ideally, one bathroom would also have a separate tub, but the walk-in showers are far more attractive to me.

mando12345 · 28/04/2018 22:27

Yes but I'd knock £10,000 off for a new bathroom with a bath.

GreenEyedGoose · 28/04/2018 22:28

We bought a house without one and it took me 3 years to get it changed. And it was a bloody nightmare!

I wouldn't buy a house without one again.

Flutist · 28/04/2018 22:28

Agree I'd buy a house without a bathtub but would install one asap. My offer would reflect the additional cost of redoing the bathroom.

AnnaMagnani · 28/04/2018 22:29

Parents house has a bath tub. To my knowledge it has not been used for at least 30 years.

My house has a bath tub with a shower over it. Tub has not been used for a bath for at least 4 years, prob longer.

So yes, I'd happily buy a house without a bath tub. Only bath tub I've used in a hotel was some magic one with see-through sides, jacuzzi, disco lights and a mysterious button labelled ozone.

YouTheCat · 28/04/2018 22:30

I love my Friday evening bath.

Grilledaubergines · 28/04/2018 22:30

It wouldn’t stop me buying the house at all. A new bathroom is nothing cost-wise if the house itself is right. It would be a priority though.

FaithEverPresent · 28/04/2018 22:31

We did. Elderly couple had removed bath to have a large shower put in due to mobility issues. The house ticked all the right boxes with the exception of the decor! The bathroom wasn’t to our taste anyway so we haggled £15k off the asking price. Bathroom was done 2 months after we moved in.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 28/04/2018 22:31

I would in a heartbeat - I hate baths. DH on the other hand can spend hours soaking in the tub, so we'd have to have one, I think

Notcontent · 28/04/2018 22:32

Yes, but I am not British!! Given the choice, I would always pick a shower over a bath.

WonderTweek · 28/04/2018 22:33

I’m not from the UK and none of the houses I grew up in had a bath (we had saunas, lol) so I’d be happy to buy a house without a bath. Since moving to the UK I must say that I have got used to the odd bath and do enjoy them, and now that I have a baby/toddler, we do use ours almost every day, so it is well used. I would live without a bath if I could buy a big plastic one for the toddler’s bath time. And maybe put a sauna in. Grin

Chinesecrested · 28/04/2018 22:34

Couldn't manage without a bath. How do you bath children or grandchildren without one? A shower just isn't the same

DobbyTheFreeElf · 28/04/2018 22:34

I'd rather have a shower than a bath so it wouldn't bother me.

Yambabe · 28/04/2018 22:35

I haven't had a bathtub in my house for 22 years. It's never been a problem, although I do occasionally indulge if we're in a hotel that has one!

WhyBird2k · 28/04/2018 22:36

That's a good point I forgot to make...if you have a baby/toddler without a bathtub, we have coped for 3 years with no bath by just putting her tiny bath in the massive walk in shower and we shower while she has a bath! So it isn't the end of the world, slightly ashamed of how long it took us to work out a solution to a splashy floor lol

happytobemrsg · 28/04/2018 22:38

Definitely need a bath with a toddler & unless I could get one put in ASAP after moving in I wouldn't buy the house

QuestionableMouse · 28/04/2018 22:38

Parents don't have a bath. Mam is disabled and can't get in the tub so we have a large walk in shower instead.

Battleax · 28/04/2018 22:39

Friends who moved to houses w/o tubs all seem to have inflatable toddler tubs for the small D.C. You use them in the shower cubicle itself.

Seems a bit of a faff to me.

KC225 · 28/04/2018 22:39

I moved to Sweden and we bought a wreck without any plumbing or a bath. I refused to move in without a bath. Funniky ebough, DD's friend up the street doesn't have a bath she often comes up for a play and the girls have a bath. Apparently, she has never had a bath in the house she has grown up in but loves them.

RoughPatchMum · 28/04/2018 22:43

I'd happily buy one. I haven't had a bath in about 17 years. Since I was a teenager. I hate them. DH hasn't had one in years either. The bath in our house was unused for 4 years after moving in until we had DS, now he does have baths about three times a week but likes a shower too so we'd have managed without one.

bimbobaggins · 28/04/2018 22:45

We don’t have a bath and I don’t miss it too much however if I’m booking a holiday or anything I usually get a room with a bath

DairyisClosed · 28/04/2018 22:46

I would rather have a proper shower than a bath
