Houses without a bath tub

A lot of houses seem to only have showers these days and no bath tub.

This is a definite no no for me, I like baths and surely it would be hard to wash children with just a shower.

It’s so frustrating so see a nice house with just a shower. Sure, could always put a bath in but not something I wouldn’t want to redecorate the bathroom immediately after moving in.

Would you buy a house without a tub?

Wouldn’t ‘t buy a house without a bath. I love my baths. We do cottage holidays a lot and always book somewhere with a bath and not just showers. That said our shower is a bit crap and it’s nice to be able to have a decent one while away!

Nodancingshoes · 29/04/2018 09:25

We've just bought a house without a bath. I do miss having a bath a little but but it has a lovely big shower and my kids are past the bath stage so not really a problem

Flev · 29/04/2018 09:46

I think it all depends on what you can afford - people insisting on both a bath and separate shower are clearly able to afford way beyond what we can! We have a tiny 2-up 2-down terrace that was built before indoor bathrooms were a "thing". As a result they've carved out a bathroom by taking off part if the kitchen - this literally holds a bath and a basin with a tiny weeny amount of remaining floorspace. Upstairs we have a tiny toilet and basin in space taken from a bedroom. We're working up to redoing the bathroom and will be retaining the bath (and finally adding a proper shower over it - at present we have a hand-held affair attached to the bath taps) but so many people have told us to just take out the bath and fit a shower instead... Glad to know it's not just me who thinks it's important to have a bath if possible.

Baths don't really exist in Finland (well they exist but are very rare) so have lived without one for the last ten years with no problem. I couldn't live in a house without a sauna though!

Gwenhwyfar · 29/04/2018 09:53

I hardly ever take a bath and when I do I feel guilty about the water waste. The aim is usually to soften the tense muscles in my shoulders, but it doesn't seem to do much.
If I lived somewhere without one, I'd probably enjoy using ones in hotels or at friends' places every once in a while.

Kismett · 29/04/2018 09:54

I’m a bit the opposite as we bought a house knowing we’d need to redo the bathroom to put in a shower over the bath.

dingdongdigeridoo · 29/04/2018 09:56

I live in a place without a bath. Really hate it and glad we are just renting so it won’t be a permanent thing. Sometimes I just crave a long soak. I’m currently pregnant and aching all over, so perhaps my bath cravings are mostly down to that. It’s also a pain as DS hates showers and has never really adjusted to them, so it’s a trauma every time.

Looking forward to going on holiday so I can have daily baths at the hotel!

Overrunwithlego · 29/04/2018 10:05

We took the bath out as no one used it. The family bathroom was never used as the kids didn’t like the shower over the bath and would use our ensuite shower instead. So we took it and now have a lovely double shower in it instead. We did consider the impact should we want to sell, but ultimately expect to be here at least 10-15 years by which point it’ll need redoing anyway. It seemed stupid to design a bathroom for a potential future owner rather than what we wanted. And worst case scenario if we end up moving earlier, the bath (now shower) is in a sort of recess with complimentary but different tiling to the rest of the bathroom. So we could reinstall a bath cheaply, without needing to do the whole bathroom.

happypoobum · 29/04/2018 10:08

I would happily buy a house without a bath but wouldn't buy one without a shower.

i actually gave up hopes of buying a beautiful flat because there was no way of putting a shower in (listed building/sloping ceilings)

I hate sitting in water. It just seems like such a waste of time.

CoffeAndCream · 29/04/2018 10:09

For me it would be a big negative against a house if it didn't have a bath!!!
It would view similar properties with a bath first, I would be far less likely to pay the full asking price for a family house with no bath.

GOODCAT · 29/04/2018 10:13

We bought a house without one and have no plans to put one in. I hugely prefer a walk in shower. Each to their own.

astoundedgoat · 29/04/2018 10:25

Used to think this but now that the children are over 5 I hate the tub. Would much prefer a swanky walk in shower.

astoundedgoat · 29/04/2018 10:27

Surely in a small house/bathroom this makes a lot more sense? (See attached)

natsku you have me browsing for home saunas now.

I’ll send you the bill if this gets out of hand. Grin

chocolatemademefat · 29/04/2018 10:30

We no longer have a bath tub because we prefer to shower. Our children are adults and we got rid of the tub because it suited us - my husband worries that the house won’t sell because we have no tub - personally I’d rather have years of doing what we prefer and whoever we sell to can do the same. I wouldn’t be knocking ten or fifteen thousand off the house either. For someone to demand a ridiculous sum like that from an old couple is just greed. I have a brand new high end shower room and it certainly didn’t cost that amount of money. To have installed a new tub would be no more than £500 because the pipe work is still there. Fifteen thousand pounds is shocking!

frieda909 · 29/04/2018 10:36

I have a bath about once a year so the actual baths wouldn’t be a priority for me, but reading this thread I’ve realised that I much prefer a shower over a bath than a walk-in cubicle. I always feel a bit claustrophobic in those, plus they’re a nightmare to clean!

BigPinkBall · 29/04/2018 10:38

I could live without a bath tub but I’d definitely prefer to have the option, we put in a shower room because neither of us wanted to shower over the bath but we wanted to keep the tub.

Aw12345 · 29/04/2018 10:39

I agree, I'd never buy a house without a bath! Would not have got to 26 weeks pregnant without a bath!!

Lockheart · 29/04/2018 10:50

I’d prefer to have a bath but equally I can live without.

So many new houses are built on tiny plots of land with such small bathrooms as they try and squeeze as many “bedrooms” —boxrooms— in as possible (so it’s a “4-bed executive property” —which a few years ago would have been your average two-up-two-down— ) that there’s just no room for a bath.

I hate baths. We don’t have one and I’ve never needed one to wash either of my children.

StripeyDeckchair · 29/04/2018 11:03

No bath wouldn't bother me at all, I never bath.
We built our house and all the bathrooms have large (1.0m x 1.6m) showers. I agreed to a bath in the master bathroom but it just gathers dust.

Showers are more eco friendly, more hygienic (all that lying in your own dirt, yuck) and much better for washing your hair.

Lotsofhappysmiles · 29/04/2018 11:18

A year ago , we took out our (not quite full size) bath and single shower cubicle and replaced them with a large walk-in shower.

I loved a bath, had one every day but can honestly say I don't miss it at all. And on holiday, I now prefer a shower, even if there's a bath also installed.

Our kids are not tiny now, and we wash babies who stay over in the sink Grin. We have a separate wall-mounted hose in the cubicle to rinse off any little ones and that works fine if they don't want the overhead shower head turned on. Like a PP, we plan to stay here long-term; we're not basing our choices on trying to predict future house value or saleability.

BlondeB83 · 29/04/2018 11:38

Bath and a shower are absolute necessities.

BlondeB83 · 29/04/2018 11:39

For me anyway!
