Houses without a bath tub

A lot of houses seem to only have showers these days and no bath tub.

This is a definite no no for me, I like baths and surely it would be hard to wash children with just a shower.

It’s so frustrating so see a nice house with just a shower. Sure, could always put a bath in but not something I wouldn’t want to redecorate the bathroom immediately after moving in.

Would you buy a house without a tub?

Nope, wouldn't buy a house without a bath at all (one of the big no no's when we were looking). Not so much for the adults, more because the kids need that down time in a bubble bath and don't like the way the water splashes on their face in a shower.

Iswallowtoothpaste · 29/04/2018 11:48

Im temporarily cleaning a holiday cottage for a friend at the moment. It sleeps 6 & 8 with the sofa bed (which is bigger and more comfortable than my actual bed)

It’s beautiful, luxurious and plushly decorated. No expense has been spared apart from the bath tub.

It’s the one thing that puts me off. I love showers but during the colder, winter months I always look forward to a bath.

There’s two bathrooms in the property (which dates from the 1750’s) both with showers. One thing that has always baffled me is how the disabled shower is up stairs!?

How does that even make sense?!

I suppose you could soon have a bath fitted? It wouldn’t put me off a property if everything else was perfect.

JeffVaderneedsatray · 29/04/2018 11:58

Although I much prefer a shower to a bath I wouldn't want a house without one. DH loves a bath as do the children and I do long distance events and there is somethign about a bath to ease the muscles that a shower just doesn't deliver!
My mum had her bath taken out and a shower put in and I do wonder how her house will be viewed when she comes to sell but that's ahead of us. She lives there now and needed a shower more than a bath.

HoppingPavlova · 29/04/2018 11:59

Given that ours currently has a thick layer of dust and many daddy long legs that now call it home I would buy a house without a bath in a heartbeat.

When the kids were young we only used a bath for them for 12/18mths. Up to 9mths we used a baby bath on the kitchen bench. From 2yo they went into the shower with one of us then graduated to going it alone when older.

I see these blow up shower tubs in babies/kids stores. Looks like they would only take 20sec to inflate with a mini-compressor (just like pool inflatables) and you would obviously just empty it into the shower receptacle when they finish. I would MUCH rather use that for 18mths/child than be stuck with a dust collector taking up room for the rest of the life of the house.

Clear moral of this thread is that if you are selling a house without a bath, do not reflect this in the price, because everyone will be wanting to deduct a further £10k regardless!

Chaosandchocolate · 29/04/2018 12:11

Doesn't really make sense to say you'd knock x amount of the asking price. Depends on whether the bath has already been factored in to the price and what the market is like. The person I bought from would easily have got the asking price. Handful of family houses in budget. I was viewing properties with the same families. Buyers often had builders in tow looking in the loft to see if it could be a third bedroom. Not fun!

Bluelady · 29/04/2018 12:12

Our bath is used every day, we wouldn't entertain a house without one. The old age argument really doesn't hold water, my mum was merrily hopping into the bath well into her 90s, she hated showers with a passion.

Chaosandchocolate · 29/04/2018 12:13

Cross post Meredint I'm typing slowly whilst preparing lunch.

No. Loads I looked at when buying only had showers and I wouldn't even entertain them.

dayinlifeof · 29/04/2018 13:09

The powerful showers people like these days also use a lot of water..

Not as much as you'd think. We have a large head rainforest shower, when we got it I left the plug in the bath to see how much water was used when I have a shower and wash my hair; there was about an inch at most in the bottom of the bath - far less than when any of us have a bath as it's a deep and long bath and we like to fill it to the brim. It takes 20 minutes to fill though so it's not a frequent treat.

Mightymucks · 29/04/2018 13:17

I wouldn’t buy this but it’s part and parcel of an aging population.

People who are elderly can’t usually bathe as they can’t get back up again and the slip risk is too large. Many elderly home owners
are getting rid of tubs.

Angie169 · 29/04/2018 13:26

I would try to get a reduction on the price but to be fair if the bathroom is in good condition I would not expect to get much knocked off.
I only have a bath which I love having long soaks in but I would like a shower to for that jump ( OK crawl reluctantly ) out of bed and wash in the morning .

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 29/04/2018 19:12

When I was staying at MIL's house when we first emigrated to Australia, I had an under-2 DS with me.
He needed to be bathed so we bought a large plastic storage box to use as a mini bath for him. Other people I know have used those large flexible laundry buckets as baby baths when there are only showers available.
Don't know if these ideas might help people with no baths and small children/showerhating children.

Scotlass · 29/04/2018 19:19

I'm just out a bath and was lying in the lovely warm water thinking I"d hate to only be able to have a shower.
My DParents got rid of their bath for a shower only as DM has one foot in the grave and has been preparing for being old since she turned 50. She insists she doesn't miss it and has no intention of moving so resell value doesn't bother her.
I wouldn't buy a house with no bath

Mousefunky · 29/04/2018 19:22

I couldn’t live without my bath. I HATE showers. The worst thing about holidays is almost always having hotels with only a shower. I go on city breaks so I put in sometimes up to 30k steps a day, all I want afterwards is a nice long soak in a bath. Showers just aren’t relaxing to me and I will only ever stay in one for five minutes max.

TheBigFatMermaid · 29/04/2018 19:23

I had a nearly 3 hour soak in my bath today, so would miss one. Having said that, I shower more than I bath. I don't think having children means you need a bath either. When mine were little, they used to bath in a blow up pool at their GPs home. They have a wet room there, no bath. They started having showers at about 4 years old.

PasstheStarmix · 29/04/2018 19:24

Bath is a must have for me, I wouldn’t buy a house without one. I also like an ensuite a separate shower cubical.

PasstheStarmix · 29/04/2018 19:24

Or

Joanna57 · 29/04/2018 19:29

I dislike baths. Wallowing in dirty water just makes me feel ill. And I can't wash my hair in a bath.

DH prefers a bath though. So he has sole use of the bath and I have sole use of the huge walk-in shower. Occasionally he will have a shower in the summer though.

I would certainly consider buying a house without a bath, as long as it had a fabulous shower.

pigsDOfly · 29/04/2018 19:40

I probably wouldn't buy a house without a bath because of the likelihood that it might be difficult to sell it if and when I wanted to.

At the moment I have a bath and a walking in shower and the bath just sits there needing cleaning from time to time to remove the dust but is otherwise never used.

I find bathing a complete faff. However, standing under a hot shower is one of life's pleasures and, to me, far more relaxing than sitting in a bath full of cooling water.

Also, you can't wash your hair in the bath, unless of course, it has a shower attachment.

pigsDOfly · 29/04/2018 19:41

What on earth is a 'walking in shower'. Think I meant walk in shower.

ConciseandNice · 29/04/2018 19:44

Hell no! I bought our house because of its enormous bath. I can lie down flat in it with a whole foot to spare. 3 kids in it. Awesome!

campion · 29/04/2018 19:55

We've just sold a house with large walk in shower,no bathtub. It never once came up in any conversation or negotiation.

Jael003 · 29/04/2018 19:57

My flat doesn't have a bath anymore. Once my daughter was old enough not to need to bath and we were both only using it to shower in anyway, I had my bathroom turned into a shower room with a lovely big shower. I didn't care at the time about saleability as I didn't expect to ever move from here, at least not anytime in the foreseeable future. But things have changed and we're now hoping to sell up and move this year. I dont know of only having a shower room will affect the amount we get for it but can't worry about that now.
