Houses without a bath tub

A lot of houses seem to only have showers these days and no bath tub.

This is a definite no no for me, I like baths and surely it would be hard to wash children with just a shower.

It’s so frustrating so see a nice house with just a shower. Sure, could always put a bath in but not something I wouldn’t want to redecorate the bathroom immediately after moving in.

Would you buy a house without a tub?

baths are terrible.

Showers all the way - showered DS as a baby - just plonked him in the shower tray and washed - job done.

Baths are sold to us as "ooooooh, luxury, bubbles..candles... oooh aaahhh" let's read a book and soak away our troubles...

THEY'RE A PITA.

They takes ages to fill.

You have to plan getting in the water with needed accessories at hand reach

The bath is HARD - so you need towels of some sort to act as a cushion for your head/neck/bum so you end up with a SOAKED towel to dry.

It's too short or long so either cold knees, or slipping down.

Your hands are cold because they're out t=of the water, holding the book, you have to remember to dry your hands before swapping over.

The water gets cold really quickly -s you you either have to top up, which is a FAFF, or get out, which is a FAFFFFFFF

If you forget a crucial thing like... the book, or a drink or whatever, you have to get out of the bath

And then you get comfy finally and read a book and realises what a bloody faff it is, and think... well I could have just done this in bed without the nonsense.

It's all just bollocks.

Oysterbabe · 01/05/2018 12:24

Bed is definitely better. If you have an electric blanket and pop that on for half hour before you get in then you can really get that bath without the faff feel.

We bought a house with only an enormous corner bath upstairs and a downstairs shower room. It was actually more annoying than not having a bath at all (the only bathers being the small DCs and you had to run it for an age to get an inch of water). We swapped for a walk in shower and put a small 1.5m bath in the downstairs loo/utility for the kids. It's been perfect although it's a tight squeeze for even an average sized adult to bathe, but DP and I never do for all the good reasons other non-bathers have made!

Do the person who would knock £10k for a new bathroom - you're overpaying for bathrooms!

I love my bath. I would only buy a house without a bath if the shower room could be changed to a bathroom. If it was too small I wouldn't be interested.

2rebecca · 01/05/2018 14:03

If you have a bath you can nearly always add a shower and screen to the bath unless it's freestanding in the middle of the room so I don't get people who wouldn't buy a house with bath but no shower. Much easier to add a shower than a bath.

Kismett · 01/05/2018 14:37

@2rebecca the house we bought has a sink that overhangs the bath in such a way that we can't easily add a shower. We considered using a curtain instead of a screen, but it wouldn't look great and we wouldn't mind redoing a few other things in there so we are going to end up reconfiguring the whole bathroom. Plus this way we can have matching tiling, as it's not tiled high enough currently.

It didn't stop us from buying the house, but it's not as simple as it could have been.

Glumglowworm · 01/05/2018 14:56

I would, I hate baths, much prefer showers

I can count on one hand the number of baths I’ve had in the last ten years. And even then, the reality of the bath experience was disappointing

mydogisthebest · 01/05/2018 15:31

Showers over the bath are better than no shower but not really great. I like big walk in showers. Also a lot of people as they get older struggle to get in and out of a bath.

I don't think baths are relaxing in the slightest. If I want to read and/or drink wine I am far more comfortable on my settee. I can lay out if I want. I don't have to worry about the water getting cold or the book falling in the water or the fact that my skin is going all crinkly while I am in there

morningconstitutional2017 · 01/05/2018 16:14

Yes, I love a bath and am lucky enough in this new-ish house to have a good shower above the tub so I now have the best of both worlds. It's bliss.

I would find it very off-putting not to have a bath already in place.

TomRavenscroft · 01/05/2018 16:42

Totally agree with 00100001. They're more trouble than they're worth. I've lived in my house for 15 years and never had a bath (yes we do have a shower!). However, I've had a string of lodgers who have all loved having baths, so it does get use.

WingsOnMyBoots · 01/05/2018 21:31

Couldn't live without a bath.

AnnabelleLecter · 01/05/2018 21:41

No I wouldn't buy a house with no bath or no room to put one.
I do have showers but much prefer a bath so I have two; a slipper bath in the ensuite and a spa bath in the main bathroom that DD loves.
I'm buying a hammock bath next.

Sara107 · 01/05/2018 22:45

Interested in the responses. We have a bath, never used. I hate, hate, hate the shower over the tub - clambering in, horrible curtain etc. My dream is to replace the whole shebang with a decent walk-in shower. But I worry that in the future career wouldn't be able to sell the house! I'm amazed that people are knocking £10-15 K off the asking price for lack of a bath - you don't have to replace an entire bathroom just because you want to put a tub in!

BackforGood · 01/05/2018 22:56

A house without a bath wouldn't be ruled out if everything else about it were great and the priced was such that I could then put one in but it would certainly be a negative point for me.

codswallopandbalderdash · 01/05/2018 23:01

God I love a bath. We now have a bath room (no shower in sight) and a shower room (hardly used). Bloody hate showers over baths.

PasstheStarmix · 02/05/2018 06:23

‘I hate, hate, hate the shower over the tub - clambering in, horrible curtain etc’

Me too, have you considered a foldable glass screen, they’re great and look lovely and modern. I prefer a separate shower cubical but realise there’s not always the room.

mizu · 02/05/2018 07:22

Love having a bath. We live in a small space so it is a bit of a hide away I guess. Reading a book in a hot bath is one of my favourite things.

YouStacey · 02/05/2018 07:28

I have a bath about once or twice a year in my own home. And never in hotels/holiday accommodation - the thought of all those other arses that have rubbed the seat of the tub - yuk

PasstheStarmix · 02/05/2018 07:52

@YouStacey how do you take a shower or use the toilet when others will have before? You can rinse a bath out the same way you can rinse a shower floor or clean a toilet.

YouStacey · 02/05/2018 07:59

Pass - I assume a toilet seat is regularly bleached, and with a shower I'm only standing in it - and both are a matter of necessity whereas a bath isn't.

YouStacey · 02/05/2018 08:01

I guess it's just the thought of sharing such an intimate space when I don't actually need to - I'd simply rather not.

YouStacey · 02/05/2018 08:03

Decades ago when showers were a novelty in the U.K. didn't Australians think of the poms as dirty because we bathed in our own dirt and then only once a week? Grin

Fintress · 02/05/2018 08:07

I can't remember the last time I had a bath, even on holiday with huge jacuzzi type baths I never use them, it's usually too hot to even consider it. Obviously you have small children a bath may be the better choice but most people I know with little ones, they like the shower.

PasstheStarmix · 02/05/2018 08:09

@YouStacey haha those Aussies should watch Woolf creek...mick doesn’t look like she’s bathed or showered in weeks Shock
