Houses without a bath tub

Reel9 · 28/04/2018 22:19

A lot of houses seem to only have showers these days and no bath tub.

This is a definite no no for me, I like baths and surely it would be hard to wash children with just a shower.

It’s so frustrating so see a nice house with just a shower. Sure, could always put a bath in but not something I wouldn’t want to redecorate the bathroom immediately after moving in.

Would you buy a house without a tub?

I don't think I would've bought a house without a bath, i love the big bath we have here.

My parents only have a bath (no over bath shower or anything) and in laws took their bath out years ago and only have a shower

Cakeycakecake · 29/04/2018 20:40

I live in rented accommodation with just a bath.
I desperately need a shower- I can’t get in and out unaided and as a lone parent, waiting for someone to come round can take a few days, and a wash just won’t do.
My big fear however, is they’ll remove the bath and install a wet room. I don’t want that. I need the occasional bath so the spasms go, or I can relax properly.

So no. I wouldn’t buy a home without a bath- but a shower would be a requirement too.

Chaosandchocolate · 29/04/2018 20:42

ThumbWitchesAbroad thank you! I think one of those flexi baskets could work.

ForkIt · 29/04/2018 20:49

How many of you have no shower? We just have a cast iron tub, though we added a shower head to the taps for rinsing hair.
I’ve never lived in a house with a shower

Xenia · 29/04/2018 21:39

We had that as children Forkit. We just put shower things over the taps for our hair wash and it worked fine. i am used to showers now and I don't think I would go back although I have a bath too

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 29/04/2018 23:30

Glad I could help, Chaos! :)

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 30/04/2018 00:59

Absolutely! I can’t stand baths; if it weren’t for DH I wouldn’t have one in the house and I only have showers myself.

PasstheStarmix · 30/04/2018 21:00

But baths are so relaxing...how can anybody not like them Confused

PasstheStarmix Because they’re not relaxing. You just sit there bored in a load of hot water essentially stewing in your own filth.

Eifla · 30/04/2018 22:18

My flat has a shower only. Rental so nothing I can do about it. I do miss the bath and it’ll be a must-have in my next place.

I take the opportunity to have loooooong scalding hot baths over Christmas when staying at my parents, or during any hotel stays Grin

Bluntness100 · 30/04/2018 22:44

Totally agree, I'm bored three mins after getting in. Takes ages to run em, total waste of water, then you sit there like a plank bored crapless.

FaithEverPresent · 01/05/2018 07:18

This is why I always read in the bath!

speakout · 01/05/2018 07:27

I don't find baths boring.

I find them mindful and meditative.
The not doing stuff is the bit I like. I switch off and slip into a zen state.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 01/05/2018 07:31

I love reading. I would hate reading in the bath however because it would be uncomfortable, irritable and in no way relaxing.

DragonMummy1418 · 01/05/2018 07:38

I wouldn't but only because I have children and they love the bath.

I never ever ever get in the bath myself, I always use the shower!

Maybe if I had a plus size jacuzzi bath that I could properly sink into it might be different 😂

AlbertaSimmons · 01/05/2018 07:58

We're about to redo both our bathrooms. We are taking the bath out and replacing with very large walk-in shower in main bathroom, new walk-in shower in en-suite. We had a bath in our previous house but when we moved we realised that neither of us had used it in the 12 years we lived there, and weren't likely to use the one in the new house.

We are spending a lot of money on these new bathrooms and don't give a fig what any imaginary future purchasers might think. I don't understand that mentality at all - it's your house and you're likely to live in it for some time so why not have it as you want it?

I also don't understand why, if having no bath is a deal-breaker, would you even view the house in the first place? And as for knocking £15k off the price Hmm ? That pre-supposes that the owner agrees with you that the bathroom is a problem to be fixed, which clearly they don't as they wouldn't have done it if they did Confused.

comfortandjoy · 01/05/2018 08:03

I’d rather have no bath than no shower. It’s much quicker if you want to wash kids etc.

BarbarianMum · 01/05/2018 08:07

Lack of bath wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me but lack of a good shower would.

woolythoughts · 01/05/2018 08:32

I love baths - I love to read and have a G&T or wine in the bath.

DH wanted to rip ours out for years and I put my foot down - firmly.

I do, however, also like a walk in shower.

I thought there was no way to square the circle then I did - with something that appears to be a mumsnet no no.

I put in a hot tub and ripped out the bath.

Now we have a hot tub for soaking and reading/wine. A gorgeous walk in rainforest shower with power attachment and digital controls for cleaning.

To me, the best of both worlds.

MumofBoysx2 · 01/05/2018 10:08

Well it is an easy thing to fix - just put a tub in. So if the house is right in other ways I would buy it. Couldn't be without my bath though!

mydogisthebest · 01/05/2018 10:35

Yes I would buy a house without a bath. In fact I recently did. Unfortunately it only has a small shower cubicle so we are going to replace it with a big walk in shower.

I hate baths. Not had one for probably over 30 years. I make sure anywhere we stay on holiday has a shower and preferably not one over a bath.

I am quite surprised that so many people still want baths although I get the point about bathing babies and young children. I have dogs and am paying a groomer to bath them at present but once the big shower is in I will bath them in that

PasstheStarmix · 01/05/2018 10:45

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue That’s a grim description. I have a shower and a bath and enjoy both. I’m clean when I go in the bath as don’t go into get a clean so to speak. I go in to relax. A hot bubble bath is relaxing. You’re missing out!

I can understand those that have a physical job and feel particularly ‘filthy’ having a shower in that instance.

OverTheHedgeHammy · 01/05/2018 11:02

No, no, no, no, no!

I love my baths. I don't get to have them as often as I like, but I love a soak and reading a junky novel.

I looked at a showroom apartment once, many years ago, and I asked the sales office what size the bath was. I was met with a stare and asked "Why do you ask?" "Because it looks on the small size to me. Is it a standard size bath, or is it smaller?" I was met with some weird avoidance for awhile and then they finally admitted that it was shorter than a standard bath would be. But they REALLY didn't want to admit it. I wonder if they were told to try to avoid giving this information out if possible?

A small bath would be even worse than no bath in my opinion. Fine for a child, but the lack of enjoyment because of being scrunched up in a bath would be horrid.

Parker231 · 01/05/2018 11:16

I much prefer showers - quicker and much more practical. Showers aren’t a disaster with DC’s. Use the sink when they are tiny and then baby bath in the shower. It’s so easy to take the baby in the shower with you and they love it. My DC’s used the shower properly once they could stand up unsupported.

Chattymummyhere · 01/05/2018 12:07

I dont care if it has a bath or not but having no shower is a deal breaker. I don’t get baths you sit in your own dirt claiming to be magically clean. Erm no thanks. A lovely walk in shower would be fabulous much better than over the bath ones.
