To be so tired of how people treat adults with allergies?

I have a severe peanut allergy, have done since toddler hood and am now 26. Over the last few years my allergy has become more of a problem than ever.

People are so selfish it actually blows my mind - there have been times when I ask nicely (I’m shy and anxious generally) if peanuts could be moved away from me because I could literally die breathing them in and I always get a horrible response. I don’t get if - I don’t do this for fun, I could literally die. I always move away from peanuts if I see them but sometimes this isn’t possible.

I am terrified that one day I will die because someone can’t be bothered to not eat peanuts. I hate flying because I always hear comments on the plane about how nobody can be that allergic to nuts etc. I am the last person to kick up a fuss and I hate asking people not to. I just don’t understand why people are so hostile about allergies?! It feels dramatic to say but sometimes it feels like people don’t care about your life. I’m not talking about it in food etc because restaurants and stuff have been super helpful I just mean airborne allergies and people not understanding.

I have to book a flight soon and I’m terrified. I don’t expect anyone to never eat peanuts again but just to understand that it isn’t easy to live with an allergy like this. I would give anything to be normal.

YANBU about adult child thing. I went into the cafe of a well know supermarket and asked if I could see their allergy menu (whilst my mum went and sat down with DD who is allergic to nuts). The lady sniffed and asked what allergy, when I said nuts she said she couldn't serve me anything as everything was a risk of cross contamination. As soon as I said "so you're telling me there's no food in a supermarket for a hungry two year old" you wouldn't believe how fast they found something.

Mumto2two oh bless your DD, it doesn't sound that bad for my DS luckily for him. How frustrating that attitude of "its just hay fever" urgh!

You have my sympathies, it must be awful to have that constant worry.

People just don't understand allergies, and ignorant of how bad they can actually be. A lot of people just think that as long as it's not in or on the person affected then it doesn't matter.

I know a young boy who has a severe egg allergy. He can't be in the same room as a cracked raw egg without having a severe reaction.
His DM told us of a time he went to his best friends house for a birthday sleepover. She had a discussion with the birthday boys mum about his allergies beforehand and had been assured that he'd be nowhere near an egg, raw or cooked.
Lo and behold the next morning, BBs Mum made pancakes while the boys were in the kitchen Hmm she had quite a shock apparently.

The parents are torn between wanting him to have a typical fulfilling childhood, playing with friends and sleepovers, and wanting to protect him from other people who think they're just being dramatic.
