To think she's too old for this?

My MIL is 66, and I just don’t think shes dressing for her age. She has this obsession of staying “young”, hates being called gran and told my DC off for calling her that. She thinks gran is “too old” and wants to be called Nan instead. She wears really short dresses during the summer and at Christmas parties, the dresses literally just cover her bum and if she bends over you will be able to see it, not only that but her boobs are hanging out. Today she came round in black leggings/tights (I could see her knickers, they were like blackish see through) a pink hoodie with holes and brown ugg boots.

AIBU to think she should just embrace her age and be happy? I’ve met her younger sister, couple years younger than MIL and they’re worlds apart.

You still haven't told us how you dress OP or what you consider appropriate clothing for a 66 year old.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 23/04/2018 20:39

Be grateful she doesn't dress like Onslow

soggydigestive · 23/04/2018 20:41

I think she sounds good fun. YABU

Chinesecrested · 23/04/2018 20:41

I'm 66 and it's a wonderful age to be! I wear what I've always worn - jeans, jumpers and boots. (Jeans, teeshirts and trainers in summer). Having said that, in my teens I wore miniskirts with white kneehigh boots, which might not be appropriate now. But if I wanted to, I would!

Tomorrowillgetitright · 23/04/2018 20:42

My youngest DD said "where the fuck have you gone?
What a great daughter Ryder63.

Tomorrowillgetitright · 23/04/2018 20:43

She was wearing a pink purposely holey hoodie Littlelondoner. We've all seen them

I'm so out of touch, unaware of this trend.

DaisysStew · 23/04/2018 20:44

I loved Rose! You sound like a right prude OP, maybe you should chill with your MIL a bit more often - some of her youthful attitude might rub off on you and make you more fun Wink.

EdmundCleverClogs · 23/04/2018 20:49

She reminds me of an older Rose in keeping up appearances.

That’s no surprise, when I read your op you reminded me of Hyacinth.

Doesn’t sound to me like she’s aging disgracefully. Some people carry on as they want, some embrace being a frump, and others fall into both sides of your MIL and yourself.

🤣😂🤣😂

Hepzibar · 23/04/2018 20:56

She prefers Nan to grandma?? Nan? Astonishing

PinotMwah · 23/04/2018 20:56

Mind your own business and stop being so judgemental

HippityHoppityWho · 23/04/2018 20:56

Bit on the fence on this one tbh. I think people should wear what they like, but for me I dont like it when people wear really short skirts or have most of their tits out because I don't know where to look incase I get a flash of their arse or nipples, which has happened. Everyone has them yeah but it doesn't mean I want to see them.

C8H10N4O2 · 23/04/2018 20:56

If you could just let me know exactly when I should stop looking at Vogue and get burkha to cover my hideous aging skin.

Thx

PS is this your MiL?

HippityHoppityWho · 23/04/2018 20:57

I also don't like it when men walk topless in the street either though, it just makes me feel uncomfortable. Frigid Freda.

PinkBuffalo · 23/04/2018 20:59

issey you did make me chuckle by declaring you're 81 and then rapidly correcting yourself Grin

AnnieAnoniMouser · 23/04/2018 21:00

Yes Annie one day I will be in my 60s and I can promise you, I won't be wearing short dresses that show my bum cheeks!

Great. But I imagine your DIL might still have ‘something’ to say about your dress sense, so be sure to ask her (or a niece etc if you don’t have a DIL).

You still didn’t say why you joined or name changed for this thread?

...was it, ironically, because you didn’t want people to judge you?

Ryder63 · 23/04/2018 21:02

Be grateful she doesn't dress like Onslow

I feckin' loved Onslow - AND Rose Smile

grannybiker · 23/04/2018 21:03

Errrm, as a granny I wear leggings and longer tops / tunics. I draw the line at Ugg boots, bloody ugly things that can lead to shuffling - far more aging!

Flisspaps · 23/04/2018 21:05

Would you rather she dressed in beige crimplene with Nora Batty tights, sensible shoes and a cardigan?

Something like Mrs Brown perhaps?

Ryder63 · 23/04/2018 21:06

What a great daughter Ryder63

Thank you! she is. They all are. Our family WhatsApp group is totally disgusting and very funny Grin

seventh · 23/04/2018 21:07

AIBU to think she should just embrace her age and be happy?

You mean:

Dress the way YOU think she should, to make YOU feel comfortable?

Doubletrouble99 · 23/04/2018 21:08

Definitely more a matter of teast not just age. I'm 61, I do wear leggings in the summer but with long tunics and flip flops. Never Uggs or hoddies when your older though.
I like nan not granny or grandma too.
I can see where others are coming from when they say leave her to it if she likes it but they wouldn't have to go out in public with her I suspect!

TheJoyOfSox · 23/04/2018 21:08

Meet Iris. Iris is 30 years older than your MIL at 96.
Iris doesn’t wear clothes to suit you. Iris doesn’t give a fuck. Be more like Iris. Wear just the hell what you want to wear and take no notice of judgemental pricks.

To think she's too old for this?
TheFirstMrsOsmond · 23/04/2018 21:11

To my ear Nan sounds older than Gran!
But with regard to her clothes, you just have to let her wear what she wants and keep your opinions to yourself - and I say that as a 58 year old whose main concern for myself is NOT looking like mutton dressed as lamb!
