to not like the word 'c**t' being used as a 'cool' insult by celebrities

Am I at odds with the world or stuck in a time warp where people don't use this word as an insult, but as anglo-saxon for the beautiful female body part used for sex and procreation? Since when do men and women think it's ok to appropriate the best part of the female body to mean the worst of humanity? And no, I don't think it is the same as the analogy of black people owning the 'n' word. Be interested in people's thoughts.

Limmy is about as funny as stepping on cat sick in your bare feet.

Ugh gross! Couldn’t you just have called him a cunt or something Wink?

Smeddum · 23/04/2018 09:49

Actually, having had this thread on my mind this morning, there are far more words I could find it easy to get angry about.

Disablist words, I’m sure you know which ones. The fact that anyone who behaves out of the ordinary is referred to as mental, crazy, nutty, loopy.
Words used to disparage people from different cultures/nationalities/races.

Words that set out to deliberate belittle and put down groups of people.

Those are the words I find most offensive.

Smeddum · 23/04/2018 09:50

Oh and words men use to put women down. Slag, slut, those kinds of disgusting words. I find them infinitely more offensive than cunt.

LassWiADelicateAir · 23/04/2018 10:05

I think it's horrible and I hate hearing it used. I instantly dislike anyone who uses it

Me too. .

BertrandRussell · 23/04/2018 10:08

"Words that set out to deliberate belittle and put down groups of people.

Those are the words I find most offensive."

Well, obviously. But everyone who thinks, even a tiny bit, agrees with you on those. You don't generally have Mumsnet threads defending them! Apart from the few people who come out of the woodwork to insist that all their black friends just love being called Sambo.....
I think "cunt" as a swear word or insult is as bad as slag and slut. Using a woman's genitals as the worst thing you can think of is so rooted in woman hating misogyny.

MorningsEleven · 23/04/2018 10:10

crikey that cunt looks utterly charming with a head tearing through it

Can we dig up Chaucer and get him to write about a charming cunt?

notacooldad · 23/04/2018 10:11

Hang on, it's not only men that use these words. They are routinely used by women against other women.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 23/04/2018 10:12

But it's not always used like that Bert. Calling someone a good cunt or a daft cunt is pretty common in some parts.

Or used as an adjective.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 23/04/2018 10:18

Ah forgot about Chaucer morning.

When I did The Canterbury Tales for A Level, my classmates and I scoured the texts for the swear words. Cunt came up quite a few times much to the amusement of our adolescent selves

Smeddum · 23/04/2018 10:18

@BertrandRussell you’d be surprised how many times those words crop up on threads on here, often unchecked. For example every time someone deals with a situation where someone is behaving outrageously, the slurs around MH inevitability creep in.
The attitudes and terminology around disabilities on here are often horrendously offensive, again, often unchecked.

@notacooldad aye, and that’s almost worse! I cannot abide those words, which chastise a woman for the sexual choices she makes. But let’s not pretend it was a woman that came up with them.

Smeddum · 23/04/2018 10:19

Although your definition of the word cunt has made me think.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 23/04/2018 10:27

I love the word. It’s definitely used affectionately where i am.

wendiwoowho · 23/04/2018 10:30

I have to agree that the word is used as a term endearment where I am too, it is commonly used, not by everyone but it isn't shocking when you overhear people use it.

As AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth said, it's not always used as an insult.

Having said that there does seem to be extra offence taken by the use of it. Someone I knew cried when she was called it once, yet the words she chose to use imo weren't any better. But somehow that word is a big no no to some people. 🤷🏼‍♀️

TossDaily · 23/04/2018 10:33

Great word. Can be used in a sexy way, an angry way and an affectionate way. Easy to spell, easy to say, and can still stop a conversation dead if used judiciously, therefore fulfilling all my criteria for a good word.

As far as cunts being beautiful, not really. Unless one is particularly fond of the appearance of a badly assembled kebab.

Birdshitbridgegotme · 23/04/2018 10:37

Cunt is my fav word! I DO NOT associate it with a virgina and I dont think a lot of people do.

ARoomSomewhere · 23/04/2018 10:48

I hate it. I am 50, fwiw?

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 23/04/2018 10:49

YANBU, it's the most offensive swear word someone can use and I hate it. It seems to be used more and more casually these days and it sounds horrible.

BalloonDinosaur · 23/04/2018 11:30

I used to really dislike it, then worked with a manager who used it in every other sentence, and I became immune to it.

Now it doesn't bother me at all and I use it fairly regularly. As do many of my colleagues (different job). I don't associate it with it's original meaning, it's just quite satisfying to say, useful to express anger/frustration in our incredibly pressurised and stressful work environment.

I think it's become less of a taboo recently, although from reading this, a lot of people clearly still have issue with it. I wouldn't say it in front of my mum, but don't know many people IRL who have a problem with it anymore.

notacooldad · 23/04/2018 15:10

I don't know who came up with them nor do I care. What I do care about is that it seems (in my expeience of young teenagers) it is the girls that are more critical, spiteful and nasty to other girls than lads are either to each other or to girls. After 30 + years of working with teenagers girls are far more judgemental than lads. As workers we have done lots of session work about respecting each other but there seems to be a long way to go.
I'm not saying attitudes stay the same once people get past the teenage years, I don't know, but the words slut, whore, bitch and cunt come mostly from the mouths of females to each other.

Smeddum · 23/04/2018 15:19

Way to prove a point about misogyny @notacooldad Hmm

Any use of the words are horrendous, but let’s not muck about. Men created those words and those “ideals” to keep women in their place. It’s not an opinion, it’s a fact.

Not sure why you are having that attitude with me. I can't change history and I totally agree that the words are horrendous but I do spend a lot of my working time tacking attitudes and working with females to respect each other and stamp out this language. Young people are pulled up on their language when they are with us whether they are talking to us generally and they say something offensive or in group work when we are dealing with issues.

Smeddum · 23/04/2018 15:35

Not sure why you are having that attitude with me

Because of your whataboutery and the language you use about teenage girls.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 23/04/2018 15:35

What about other genital based words? 'Dick' mostly means either arsehole or foolish, 'cock' is a full on insult.

I am rather fond of 'fanny' and I have been known to call my husband 'fannybaws'.

And we can never forget 'Hurricane Bawbag'

Even The West Wing's 'Toby Zeigler' thought that was funny!

Smeddum · 23/04/2018 15:38

“Hurricane Bawbag” Grin we’d just paid for a new fence when that hit! Thankfully it stayed upright Grin

notacooldad · 23/04/2018 15:38

Because of your whataboutery and the language you use about teenage girls.
Go on, what language have I used about teenage girls that is wrong and what the fuck does ' whataboutery' mean?
