Open access link. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/mumsnet-founder-justine-roberts-transgender-activists-try-to-curb-free-speech-on-site-z3sr3nf6q?shareToken=ade388be59ac427155003eff83c5158c

“Transgender activists have contacted Mumsnet advertisers and said they will be organising a boycott of their products if they don’t remove their advertising from Mumsnet,” Roberts said.

“A significant minority of our users feel very strongly about women’s rights and very uneasy [about the proposals]. This is an issue that needs to be discussed and that’s why we’re prepared to take any potential advertising hit.”

I hate that any debate is shut down by transactivists crying bigot, transphobic. Notice it is always nearly the transwomen, who are biologically male, and not the transmen, biological females. They are using their male privilege and misogeny to silence women, they are doing that now, it is so dangerous.

elpth · 15/04/2018 23:15

Well done Justine and MNHQ. Really proud to be a MNer. I also had my eyes opened to the actual issues of self ID through threads showing in active and have contacted my MP and MSPs for the first time ever as a result. Thank you to all the articulate and patient MNers on the FWR threads and to MNHQ for standing up to the bullying. ThanksGin

AgathaMystery · 15/04/2018 23:18

Thanks Justine & MNHQ.

AmandaKnocks · 15/04/2018 23:43

Another silent lurker here, de-lurking to say thank you to Justine, MNHQ and the FWR posters Thanks

BuntyII · 16/04/2018 00:13

@HereComesTheSun2 similar story too. I joined mainly for conception, pregnancy and AIBU. Got into the trans threads and it was a link to terfisaslur.com that really opened my eyes. So thanks to MN for allowing me to discover this information which so many people are trying to hush up.

BuntyII · 16/04/2018 00:17

And just to add to the above point, I believe the TRA movement is very worrying as it attracts troubled young people with mental health and self esteem issues and screws them up further - beyond recognition I imagine in many cases.

(Of course I'm not talking about transgender people in general of which there are some on this board who's contribution are of great value, but the new wave of teenaged TRAs who use Twitter to threaten 'terfs')

Alternativefacts · 16/04/2018 01:06

Justine / mumsnet, well done to you Flowers for having the courage to put your heads above the parapet when so many policiticans don’t dare to. The more the issues are aired, the more people will be appalled at what the TRAs are demanding and their complete lack of regard and respect for women and girls. And also, their lack of regard for the consequences of their aggressive and narcissistic behaviour on other trans people who do not share their views.

Mumsnet is doing such an important thing in creating this ‘ safe space’ for discussion. Thank you. I hope you have the strength and support you need to weather the storm this will unleash. ( how Shock that allowing women to talk should feel so risky in 21st century Britain)

Gregoria · 16/04/2018 01:34

Just another lurker writing in to add my support on this. :)

So that advertisers can see the strength of feeling among most women ie their target audience on MN.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 16/04/2018 02:35

I was so incredibly pleased to read Justine's statement/interview in the ST today.

Then I remembered that FWR had been removed, temporarily, from Active Convos.

Hmm, funny that ...

In view of today's article about Justine's views, I wouldn't remotely object to FWR remaining slightly harder to access for another week or so.

I think that would ease the burden on the fantastic posters there who have been doing such a wonderful job enlightening us all.

I am not one of them although I am eternally grateful.

And as one lurker to the thousands who I am sure are out there (which is why Justine had to say "significant minority") I will do my best to pitch in when the inevitable onslaught happens.

Whether it's new people looking for answers or the other mob looking for trouble, pick a poster that you agree with, and think what would she say.

And then say that.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 16/04/2018 02:54

And talk to people you know, if it doesn't present a risk to you.

I've lost count of the number of people I've said, in passing, Have you heard about this weird Gender Identity thing?

No, they say.

So off you go with a couple of snippets, just make sure one of them makes them say Don't be daft, you're joking.

Then you give them a bit more, even better if you can google on the spot, or you tell them to go and check.

Every 2 people you tell, each tell 2 more.

You get the picture.

And the more people like that who know, the easier it will be for people with influence and power to speak up.

AngryAttackKittens · 16/04/2018 07:08

I will boycott any advertiser that pulls out of MN due to trans extremist pressure. Brands that are complicit in bullying women into silence will not get my custom.

I will too. Women are responsible for the bulk of household spending, and many of us really don't appreciate being told that we're bigots for having opinions, or that we should not be permitted to express them. The absence of similar pressure aimed at men is notable.

There are plenty of companies that I can give my money to that aren't actively indicating that they consider me not to have a right to free speech, so there's no reason to support those who're on board with the "women, kindly STFU" approach.

AnitaLovesVictor · 16/04/2018 07:32

The way women have been silenced on this issue and the glee with which so many men (particularly right-on lefty men) have belittled women's concerns and hurled abuse at women who speak up has really opened my eyes to the levels of misogyny in society.

I think this is a really important point, and certainly very true for me.

Had already hit peak trans on a number of issues - Caitlyn Jenner being Woman of the Year, the cotton ceiling etc. But the thing that really tipped over the edge was the way it showed just how misogynistic so many men are.

It's like a lot a men are using this issue as carte blanche to be absolutely vile and abusive to women, to see young Labour Party men (some with official positions) calling women 'bitch', 'cunt' and 'slut' on FB and Twitter - with impunity, because they have been reported and no action taken - has been shocking.

Whereas a Labour woman says 'women don't have dicks' on Twitter (crude maybe, but a factual statement) and gets hauled in for questioning by Labour, and suspended from the party.

Aeroflotgirl · 16/04/2018 07:43

IT is scarey, tge male power and privilege responsible for this. How open discussion and debate is quickly silenced, where is democracy. You will comply! You will agree. You are worthless and unimportant.

MissPiggysKarateChop · 16/04/2018 07:51

Just want to add my thanks and appreciation for MNHQ and Justine. Thank you, this place has become very important to me. I use lots of the site but I particularly love FWR - so thank you for letting us talk when everywhere else seems intent on silencing us.

makeitso · 16/04/2018 08:17

Thank you Justine and MNHQ Thanks
I'm a silent lurker on threads mostly (because someone will have already said what I am thinking) but I have learned a lot from them. I really worry for my DD's. MN is teaching me on this issue so I can teach DD's.

hooochycoo · 16/04/2018 09:28

Thank you from me too! Petition signed .

Wish I felt able to share it, but not confident I could without vilification.

MerryInthechelseahotel · 16/04/2018 09:32

Thank you from me too another of the significant minority.

AbsintheFriends · 16/04/2018 09:44

Heartfelt thanks from me too. I've been a member since 2003 (under numerous names), have learned more than I can possibly recount, and bought more than I care to remember as a result of what I've read on this board.

I'm proud to think that kids may well hear the names Justine Roberts and Mumsnet in history lessons in the future Grin

Flopsymopsycottontailbuns · 16/04/2018 09:52

I think this is so important and gray Mumsnet are standing up to be counted.

Out of interest are any other women's media addressing this? Wouldn't it be great if they all stood up together?

Flopsymopsycottontailbuns · 16/04/2018 09:53

*great even

TERFragetteCity · 16/04/2018 09:58

I've been away for a week, just dipping in and out and had a tear in my eye yesterday reading this.

Well done MN.

The TRA are bullying companies that advertise on Mumsnet. Instead of working with women's groups and trying to reassure them, they are being quite nasty. Just says a more about them really. They are even infiltrating nurseries and schools where there are very young children, promoting their message. That would really confuse children, they are just about learning that they are a boy or girl, without throwing that into the mix.

Beyond11cisRetinol · 16/04/2018 10:12

The gang bullying is not really a surprising approach by TRAs anymore (if it ever was!). They've also amassed against the primary school that stepped in to host Cardiff's WPUK event at the last minute on Thursday - after they pressured the original venue to cancel.

flowersonthepiano · 16/04/2018 10:46

The next thing, apparently, is to try and get MumsNet delisted by Google

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3223072-how-to-complain-about-mumsnet

They really don't like women talking. Angry

AnitaLovesVictor · 16/04/2018 10:48

The writing's been on the wall for a while, I'm afraid.

The first time I remember a 'no-platforming' attempt (which failed actually), was David Irving at the Oxford Union. He's an actual Nazi, Hitler apologist and holocaust denier.

Then it was OJ Simpson, Mike Tyson, a few other fairly horrific people, and then Germaine Greer. Then I saw Jacob Rees Mogg being attacked at Bristol Uni - and I really thought that something is wrong here.

I don't like JRM at all, and despise his politics. But he is an elected MP, and as such a no-platform attempt against him is a strike at our very democracy.

And now women are not allowed to meet, unless they repeat the mantra 'transwomen are women' and centre transwomen in their feminism.

It's all gone too far - I consider myself a left winger - but there are groups of far-left thugs going around literally bullying, attacking and silencing anyone that doesn't capitulate completely to their views. Free speech is genuinely under threat I would say.
