Aibu to think Mumsnet has issues with black women

Ghanagirl · 14/04/2018 11:51

Just that really, I’ve read really horrible comments about Meghan Markle, Alexandra Burke, Serena Williams talented and hardworking individuals who seem to offend some Mumsnetters simply by being beautiful and successful.
I’m not surprised as happens in RL but I guess it’s disappointing as Mumsnet touts itself as a more educated network than netmums

OP posts:
MagnifyingGlassSearch · 14/04/2018 12:37

My bold didn't work Confused

Fattymcfaterson · 14/04/2018 12:38

So you shouldn’t speak up or call out offensive or racist words or behaviour as it upsets racists okay

That's not what you're doing tho is it?
Show us the offensive language and racist words you are calling out?

findingmyfeet12 · 14/04/2018 12:38

This isn't really about mn but criticism of a political figure or a royal etc is par for the course.

People having a strong dislike of someone like SW is much more baffling. She's just a sports star. I do start to question whether it's racism in those cases.

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 14/04/2018 12:38

Okay aibu nobody on Mumsnet is racist and black woman are just looking to be offended

You can't speak for every black woman fortunately.

GoodniteJimBob · 14/04/2018 12:39

Well, there is racism is society so it makes sense it will spill over on to MN sometimes. I don't think the OP is being entirely unreasonable.

I haven't spotted it. Doesn't mean its not there.

GnusSitOnCanoes · 14/04/2018 12:40

But... Ghana, you've not given a single supporting example of this 'racism'. You keep talking about 'calling out racism' - so do it! What specific examples are you referring to?

SoyDora · 14/04/2018 12:43

I’m fully prepared to accept the racism is there OP if you can provide any examples of it. However I’m not just going to take your word for it.
At the moment you’re not ‘calling out racism’, you’re just telling us we’re racist, but providing no evidence.

Birdsgottafly · 14/04/2018 12:44

"was a bit racist"

There's no such thing, it's either Racist or not.

TSSDNCOP · 14/04/2018 12:44

Okay aibu nobody on Mumsnet is racist and black woman are just looking to be offended

Oh don't get all huffity. In response to your questions the posters on this thread tend not to agree. Also no ones actually going to say "I'm a racist".

I think though it's a big tent, you will get people who are racist, disablist, agist etc. Then it's the responsibility of all of us, whatever colour, to speak up, report and get that person deleted.

WetPaint4 · 14/04/2018 12:45

If this response demonstrates your ability to process information, I'm not surprised you're struggling with this thread. I did not say we should avoid speaking up so as not to upset racists.

Actual offensive or racist language should be highlighted and shamed. But you have started a thread to discuss racism... with no actual examples of racism. It is possible to dislike someone of a different race just because of who they are. If all you're coming with is a general feeling, fine, but are non-black people really going to agree with you based on that and the fact that amongst all the white people MN users don't like, there are also some black people?

noeffingidea · 14/04/2018 12:45

I have noticed racism against Serena Williams and Michelle Obama, but more on other forums than this one, tbh. Do you post on other forums as well, OP, and how would you compare them? I feel that Mumsnet is better moderated in this respect than many other forums.
In the case of Serena and Michelle Obama, it's very noticeable, because it's tied in with sexism as well. They stand out because they are strong, self confident, intelligent and succesfull. How dare black women be all those things.
I've noiced that Meghan Markle is unpopular with some people , can't think why. I think she's lovely and hope she and Harry are very happy together.

OohMavis · 14/04/2018 12:45

People having a strong dislike of someone like SW is much more baffling.

It's not baffling if you think about it. She's outspoken, confident, successful and hugely respected in her field. She also has a strong, athletic, 'thick' body. Everything misogynists and women with internalised misogyny cannot tolerate. It would be far more surprising if she were universally liked imo.

TitaniasCloset · 14/04/2018 12:47

I have never come across that on Mumsnet. Would you care to point out on which threads you have seen this?

Tartyflette · 14/04/2018 12:48

There have certainly been extremely unpleasant racist comments made about Meghan Markle in the press but I have not seen any here -- on the contrary, she seems to be popular and people wish her well. That's what I've seen anyway.
Have you seen racist comments about her here , OP?
If you have, about her or anyone else, please report them to Mumsnet HQ. They'll delete the post and if the poster is a serial offender they can be banned.
I haven't seen that racism is a big problem here but I admit I may miss it.
Certainly any negative comments about other groups of people, travellers, for example, are swiftly jumped on by other posters who condemn any discrimination or nastiness.

TerfsUp · 14/04/2018 12:49

YABU.

Keilninnock · 14/04/2018 12:49

They hate everyone

findingmyfeet12 · 14/04/2018 12:50

I've seen a thread where MM is disliked by most. It doesn't strike me as racism though. People have their reasons for disliking her and whilst I didn't agree with the reasons they weren't racist IMO.

EasterBunBun · 14/04/2018 12:51

YABU. But you know that.

UpstartCrow · 14/04/2018 12:51

When you see a racist comment report it to Mumsnet. They'll delete it.

Xenia · 14/04/2018 12:51

It is just a matter of proof. Show us the posts and we can look at it and make a judgment. That is what people do to prove things.
There are racists and sexists all over the place although I have never felt MN was particularly racist and of course rarely sexist because we are mostly women here who support other women.

I think Michelle O is great although I always wished she were present - a female lawyer as presdient would be lovely rather than these women just supporting their man all the time. I hope Meghan M keeps up a career or is she supposed to be called "Mrs Rachel Egelson" officially (and Mrs Trevor Egelson when married before)?

BertrandRussell · 14/04/2018 12:52

“I can't stand the sight of Michelle Obummer.

Guess that makes me a racist”

It might. It might not. It definitely makes you horrid.

heateallthebuns · 14/04/2018 12:52

I've never seen any of them mentioned except for mm and I don't think it was racist, except for a few comments that were removed, it was just slagging her off for royal related entitlement.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 14/04/2018 12:52

I give up.

You clearly can’t provide a single piece of evidence to support your claim; you’re just engaging in some bizarre kind of magical thinking whereby you simply stating something makes it so.

Reasoned debate and discussion is one thing, but you just tantrumming like a child and then having a sarcastic strop because no-one is prepared to accept your point without some corroboration is ridiculous.

cantstopfuckingeating · 14/04/2018 12:53

Wtf?
Yabu
Alexandra Burke is theeee most annoying fucker I've ever come across
Nothing to do with her ethnicity
She'd be equally annoying if she were pink with green polka dots
Fuck off and look somewhere else for offence

Deemarow · 14/04/2018 12:53

Mumsnet can be a lovely site with some of the quieter sub forums home to users who are always happy to give advice and help others. However I'd say 90% of threads on aibu are either complaining about making fun of or belittling others. So it's no surprise that such a negative space attracts racist individuals that can't stand seeing black women being successful so take great pleasure in trying to run them down.
