Aibu to think Mumsnet has issues with black women

Just that really, I’ve read really horrible comments about Meghan Markle, Alexandra Burke, Serena Williams talented and hardworking individuals who seem to offend some Mumsnetters simply by being beautiful and successful.
I’m not surprised as happens in RL but I guess it’s disappointing as Mumsnet touts itself as a more educated network than netmums

Eh?

Shizzlestix · 14/04/2018 12:07

Professionally offended comes to mind. Pretty sure I’ve seen talented/beautiful women of all races being criticised on here at some point. Don’t ever recall AB or SW being mentioned, MM is only prominent due to the upcoming wedding/marrying a royal.

tigerrun · 14/04/2018 12:07

Mumsnet isn't a collective mind - it is a cross section of society. There are some arseholes who post occasionally - if you see racism, sexism or any kind of bigotry then report, but I have never noticed any specific issues or problems with 'black women'.

The women you have mentioned are just people, liked by some, disliked by others - the colour of their skin is irrelevant, as it should be.

pictish · 14/04/2018 12:07

Yes, I believe that the fact that she’s marrying Harry is her most notable crime. She’s pretty, slender, poised and charismatic. How very dare she?

Ghanagirl · 14/04/2018 12:07

lolaflores Black women also suffer mental health issues and physical challenges and I’m 2nd generation Afro carribean.
But I wouldn’t have to tell you I was whereas you might have to point out your Irish heritage and it makes all the difference to the way people react to you.

YABVU. Mumsnet are not the problem.
There are 12 million users on Mumsnet, and a percentage of them are going to be shitty people. There's not much Mumsnet can do about that except moderate the site and ban the worse offenders.

TidyDancer · 14/04/2018 12:08

Yabu op, which I rather suspect you already know. This is a goady thread without foundation.

findingmyfeet12 · 14/04/2018 12:09

I've noticed a lot of thinly veiled racism against SW generally but I've not read any mn posts about her.

People's dislike of MM doesn't strike me as being racially motivated. I think the fact that's she's not British and was a moderately successful actress is more of an issue as well as her having been married before.

Momo18 · 14/04/2018 12:10

Is this for real?! Are you accusing the whole of Mumsnet of been racist because a select few dislike people that happen to be black?

I've seen many posts disliking Kate Middleton, Kerry Katona, Katie Price etc, all not black. Your clearly seeing what your what to see as it supports whatever agenda you have. It's got zero to do with racism and your off your head for coming to that conclusion tbh...

Ghanagirl · 14/04/2018 12:11

Why am being goady?
Because I’m a black woman pointing out racism.
I guess MLK was a”goady fucker”🤔

I have posted on another thread and this is what I meant when I say we can't say anything these days for risk of offending. So ok people, do not comment negatively on any person that may be deemed anything other than white, because it will be seen as racist.

pictish · 14/04/2018 12:12

We don’t have to agree with you because you’re black. Don’t be silly.

Bluntness100 · 14/04/2018 12:13

God. There is one of these threads every week. Mumsnet has a problem with..,,middle class, working class, men, working mums, stay at home mums, black men, black women, people on benefits, high earners, low earners, single parents, families with lots of kids, it's never ending.

No "mumsnet" does not have a problem with these things, stop being ludicrous. Some arsehole individuals might, just like in the real world. There are 12 million people on here. However it's in no way reflective of the overwhelming majority.

And I think uou know that.

I’m white but every now and then I certainly do notice MN posters who slag off particular WOC in ways which I’m prettty sure they wouldn’t if they were white - and I notice far more other posters minimising racism in a pretty tone deaf way. I’m sure if I weren’t white I’d notice it more.

But I don’t think it’s a MN specific problem, and it’s definitely not universal across the site - the mods will act swiftly if notified.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 14/04/2018 12:14

So you’re not actually going to prove/develop/defend your argument? Just assert it to be true?

Riiiiight.

But that’s a special size of ego you’ve got comparing your own debating skills to those of Martin Luther King.

Ghanagirl · 14/04/2018 12:14

bobstersmum
No just don’t say anything racist and offensive, simples!

Oh give over Hmm

lolaflores · 14/04/2018 12:15

ghanagirl the tone has changed for me on several occasions when my Irish heritage has become apparent. Granted, it isn't instant but doesn't take too many clues and not too far behind are the Paddy/Mick jokes. I have been physically assaulted in a pub because of my Irishness. I spent some of childhood in Ireland and have an accent. I was born in UK, got shit in Ireland for having an English accent.
My mental health challenge will impact on my employability if I chose to diclose it and my physical challenges are visible and not something that is a total surprsise when I point it out. My attractive rolling limp is a give away.
Prejudice is prejudice and what you suffer may operate in a different way but does not mean it doesn't demeant the experience those who encounter it for whatever reason.

category12 · 14/04/2018 12:16

What TheyMostlyComeOutAtNightMostly said ^.

Littleredboat · 14/04/2018 12:17

Ghanagirl you’re looking for something that isn’t there.

There are many threads on here criticising women of all races for all sorts of (usually spurious) reasons. The law of averages means a few of those will be about women who happen to be black.

The problem is with the whole bitchy celebrity culture we have in the UK. It’s a bitch issue but it’s not a race one.

pictish · 14/04/2018 12:19

I have never noticed criticism being any more weighted towards black women than any other in all the years I have been here. Granted, I’m not looking for it...but no...I can’t say it’s something I’ve ever picked up on.

Mind you, I don’t often migrate towards the threads about celebrities because I don’t give a toss about them.

Ghanagirl · 14/04/2018 12:19

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross
I’m pretty confident but I never compared myself to MLK just can’t understand why it’s “goady” to call out racism just because you can’t see it.

OP posts:
Playdow · 14/04/2018 12:21

I am sick of people assuming anyone who is non black must have an agenda against black people, that's racist!
