Aibu to think Mumsnet has issues with black women

Just that really, I’ve read really horrible comments about Meghan Markle, Alexandra Burke, Serena Williams talented and hardworking individuals who seem to offend some Mumsnetters simply by being beautiful and successful.
I’m not surprised as happens in RL but I guess it’s disappointing as Mumsnet touts itself as a more educated network than netmums

And if it matters,

I don’t like Meghan Markle
I actively dislike Alexandra Burke
I have no feelings either way towards Serena Williams but recognise her skill and talent
I can’t stand Kerry Katona
I don’t like Katie Price

Not a single one of those feelings are linked to skin colour or even heritage

Xenia · 14/04/2018 13:10

Fergie was ginger... none of us are thought of worse than that category.

Anyway of ocurse there will be racism in all kinds of places and we need to be alter for it but I have not really seen it on MN. Sometimes people say their colour or where they are from but I've never seen anyone be particularly nasty about it.

RunMummyRun68 · 14/04/2018 13:10

I like Michelle Obama but can't bear Megan markle. That's my opinion

Am I racist?

I can't bear Megan markle

Am I racist?

uberqueen · 14/04/2018 13:10

Eh? I’ve seen plenty of critical comments about white women, Theresa May, Kerry Katona, Katy price are the names that spring to mimed.

The fact that you're comparing Alexandra Burke , Meghan M and Serena Williams to those three sort of proves the OPs point .

Curiousmoi · 14/04/2018 13:10

@Ghanagirl
I agree. The constant attack on WOC is present everywhere, mumsnet included.
Why do all the people on this thread feel as though you are personally attacking them?
If you're not racist, what's the problem?

findingmyfeet12 · 14/04/2018 13:12

There is bound to be racism on mn as there is in society generally.

The op implies that mn as a whole is racist or shouldn't be racist at all. It's unrealistic either way.

Im a non white woman and I've not noticed any more racism on mn than anywhere else, in fact considerably less than on other forums.

Someone like AB is quite annoying and MO was seen by many as ineffectual and self-serving so of course they are going to be disliked. Margaret Thatcher was disliked as is Theresa May at the moment. It's sometimes to with race but not always.

Pinkvoid · 14/04/2018 13:12

The reason MM gets bad press has nothing to do with the fact she is 1/4 black. I agree with PP, the press didn’t take too kindly to Fergie either not to mention Camilla Parker Bowles (which was just, some would argue...) She has chosen to marry into one of the most revered families in the world, she hasn’t gone into this with blinkers on and will know what to expect. Some could argue she enjoys it but who knows.

Ghanagirl · 14/04/2018 13:13

AdiosPeaceOfRoast
Thanks for at least reading what I’ve said and thought about it from a different perspective from your own.
As for those of demanding that I provide “proof” of racism that’s the point it’s hard to prove but look at any of the threads regarding MM SW or AB and the common theme is that they’re “pushy”, Agressive”, think too highly of themselves then there’s the references to their hair and in Serenas case her shape.
I’m not easily offended but it seems some of You with privilege are easily upset when someone dares to challenge your views!

Why do all the people on this thread feel as though you are personally attacking them?

Do they? All of them? I think most people are just asking for some examples.

areyoubeingserviced · 14/04/2018 13:14

Uber Queen.
Totally agree with your last comment.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 14/04/2018 13:14

Cannot stand Meghan Markle - don't know who A Burke is and don't like Serena because she is too smug.

Pinkvoid · 14/04/2018 13:15

And it isn’t racist to not like someone. I can say I don’t like MM and not be racist. It kinda twists back to not liking Israel and that automatically equalling anti-semitism. Don’t conflate the two issues.

AhhhhThatsBass · 14/04/2018 13:15

I adore Serena Williams. Amazing tennis player. Did you ever see the way Andy Murray defended women’s tennis in an interview once with One curt word. Fabulous.

Pinkvoid · 14/04/2018 13:17

If I say I don’t like Macron it doesn’t mean I don’t like French people or am xenophobic. A lot of people get stick on here, it’s nothing to do with their race/gender/nationality.

areyoubeingserviced · 14/04/2018 13:19

Ghana Girl. I benefit from white privilege as a ‘ middle class ‘ white women.
I agree with your you that there is sometimes racism on mumsnet.
The issue here is that in your OP you made a sweeping statement , without providing evidence.

Mightymucks · 14/04/2018 13:20

I like Serena and Venus Williams and always have. Seen both live at Wimbledon and their skill is phenomenal. I also happen to like them as people, I have always thought they come across as very pleasant women.

I like Alexandra Burke, I can understand why people find her irritating but we both had a parent with the same illness so I have always felt a lot of empathy for her, we are from a similar area and around the same age too so I identify with her quite a bit despite the fact we are a different colour.

I absolutely LOVE Michelle Obama.

I can’t stick Meghan Markle and I think she’s on the make but I also feel a bit sorry for her because I think she thinks she’s clever but I don’t really think she understands what she is getting herself into.

Meh. Must be racist then.

SoupDragon · 14/04/2018 13:21

No just don’t say anything racist and offensive, simples!

Except apparently it isn’t “simples”. In your opinion it is unacceptable to make a negative comment about a black woman because you would claim it is because the person is racist. Sometimes you dislike something about a person regardless of their race or skin colour.

Someone else asked : would Kerry Katona and Katie Price be fair game in your eyes if they were black?

some people on MN are racist/have issues with black women. That doesn’t mean MN is racist.

Ghanagirl · 14/04/2018 13:22

RunMummyRun68
I have no idea if you’re racist but your choosing to be obtuse.

OP posts:
RunMummyRun68 · 14/04/2018 13:22

Thing is ghana, every celeb or person in the public eye gets ripped apart on mumsnet for something or other

You are just selecting woc and fitting it into your agenda. I've seen Kate mifdfletons figure ridiculed, davinas body ridiculed and reported posts tearing other women apart too. Can't remember what the colour of their skin was

But I hate that you were called names from a car passing by. Shocking. Were your children ok? Did they hear too?Sad

pictish I like your style!!!

Mightymucks · 14/04/2018 13:23

I benefit from white privilege as a ‘ middle class ‘ white women.

Meh. I don’t believe white privilege exists. I think it is a convenient invention of middle class white people as it allows them to blame their privilege on something they can’t change (being white) rather than recognising that their privilege comes from wealth and class which they could change if they wanted to (but they don’t).

Curiousmoi · 14/04/2018 13:23

@MilkTrayLimeBarrel
Too smug
How??
If she were a man you would not be saying that.
She's confident, as she should be.
Andy Murray is also confident, does that make him smug?

RunMummyRun68 · 14/04/2018 13:24

Oh I just read your last comment to me.

Why was I being 'obtuse'?

Coconutspongexo · 14/04/2018 13:25

I’m not sure if it’s specific to black women but there does seem to be an awful lot of xenophobes and closet racists on here.

I suppose it’s the same within the general population though
