I hate it as so many horses get badly injured or even killed . I don’t know how people can enjoy it 🙁

Agree 100% op. It's the acceptable face of animal abuse.

ilovetvandchocolates · 14/04/2018 09:15

Not a single equine fatality in the whole 3 day event last year. During a year of racing horses do get injured and subsequently put to sleep occasionally. That's the sport and no one is forced to take part or place a bet.

Pasithea · 14/04/2018 09:17

Here we go , the annual we know nothing about the racing industry but will have a go at the national time.

Singlikemiranda · 14/04/2018 09:17

Totally agree OP, time it was stopped

Dineout112 · 14/04/2018 09:18

I’m sure there were some with serious injuries tho
Just think it’s really cruel

ILikeMyChickenFried · 14/04/2018 09:18

No, indeed. I don't even like horsr

Pengggwn · 14/04/2018 09:19

I don't bet on horse racing. The level of risk to the animals makes me Confused

Plump82 · 14/04/2018 09:21

Animals for entertainment just shouldn't be a thing imo.

ginandnappies · 14/04/2018 09:21

Agreed! It's disgusting.

SaucyJane · 14/04/2018 09:22

I can't watch it for fear a horse will be injured; it makes me feel a bit ill to see them in pain or galloping with no rider and an accident waiting to happen.

Although they have trimmed it down, I think it's still too challenging. Too many horses die.

I will never ever bet on it or even enter a work sweepstake and I can't bear it on the tv.

flubdub · 14/04/2018 09:23

YANBU
It’s disgusting and cruel

Dogsmom · 14/04/2018 09:23

Me too, any races with jumps in should be banned.

Yet there will still be many people who claim to be animal lovers that bet on it because the potential of winning a few quid is more important than the welfare of the horses.

LucilleBluth · 14/04/2018 09:28

I have three vet friends on my Facebook who all enjoy the GN. I think my MN days are numbered, it's so repetitive and predictable.

Slartybartfast · 14/04/2018 09:28

I dont like it simply because my df died on that day. brings back memories.

BarbaraofSevillle · 14/04/2018 09:29

Hundreds of horses die every year in training or in other races.

Why single out the Grand National?

Oblomov18 · 14/04/2018 09:31

How many horses die? Seriously injured?
Really? Please list them. From the last few years, or the last 10. What are the stats please?
Horses die in other races and during training.

XiCi · 14/04/2018 09:33

No OP. All horses safely returned from last year's Grand National. There were no serious injuries or fatalities.

I absolutely love the grand national. 600 million people who watch and enjoy the race agree with me. Every year on mumsnet the same old shit gets spouted by people who know nothing about horses or the racing industry.

Dineout112 · 14/04/2018 09:35

I remember someone listing the stats in a previous thread and it wasn’t good

OP posts:
fourpawswhite · 14/04/2018 09:36

XiCi exactly. Could not have put it better. Every single year.

DameXanaduBramble · 14/04/2018 09:39

It’s a good old MN staple, the Grand National...you can bet your bottom dollar on that.

allthegoodnameshadgone · 14/04/2018 09:39

What I don't get is that horse racing goes on all year round all over the world. Why does everyone get so up in arms about this race in general.

I'm not being a GF I'm just curious.

Cards in the table, we are from the NW and it's the only race we have a bet on ever. We have done since I was a little girl and before I was born.

Crowd · 14/04/2018 09:42

Those horses have access to the best care money can buy, year round. In the event of an accident they are put to sleep asap so they don't suffer.

Save your sympathies for poor old Dobbin stuck in a field on his own.

PinkAvocado · 14/04/2018 09:46

OP I agree. The Grand National highlights the potential cruelty as it is such a big event but I’d love all jump races to be banned.

allthegoodnameshadgone · 14/04/2018 09:47

So the issue is the jumps not the number of horses running the course?

ClashCityRocker · 14/04/2018 09:51

It's like an annual tradition, this thread.

Noone seemed overfussed during Cheltenham.
