Windrush Petition

Theworldisfullofidiots · 13/04/2018 23:29

Please would you consider signing this petition to provide amnesty for the windrush children who either lived most of their whole lives here or in some cases were born here but the home office has lost their paper work. The home office is a shambles but being successful in creating their hostile environment.
These people have lived their whole lives here because we asked their parents to work here. They had commonwealth status and then the rules were changed .

Here it still is.

biscuitmillionaire · 19/04/2018 22:32

From the Q&A section of Guardian article:

On Monday, the home secretary Amber Rudd announced the creation of a new Home Office team dedicated to ensuring that Commonwealth-born long-term UK residents would no longer find themselves classified as being in the UK illegally.

So petition no longer needed.

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 19/04/2018 22:34

A guy I grew up with just fought for this on channel 4 last night, it’s a disgrace which I’m sure will get ex0lained away with shit politics. Fingers crossed all the people affected get it sorted 🙏🏼

Theworldisfullofgs · 19/04/2018 22:39

Good to hear that action is being taken. Interesting to see if it's carried through....

Peregrina · 19/04/2018 23:12

I think it's still worth signing the petition - words from the Government are cheap. It's the actions which count. The first thing we need to see is those currently under investigation - some highlighted in the Press - being sent written confirmation that they are British, and always were.

Becles · 20/04/2018 00:39

The government has only acted nearly 2 years after this was raised as a problem. Lots of mp letters and newspaper articles were ignored.

Sign the petition if you haven't already

kateemo · 20/04/2018 06:45

Yes, so this hotline has received 200+ calls. Now, it was supposed to have been staffed by senior home office personnel, but it's not. Read the article posted above byHelenaDove. People are being asked to disclose all of their info before getting any assistance. And then staff are simply telling them to check the web site and apply the regular way. WTAF! Amelia Gentleman at the Guardian continues to shed light on this subpar response from the government. And if someone says "our position is clear" on this one more time, I will scream. It may be clear, but it is not yet been proved to be good or effective!!

Theworldisfullofgs · 20/04/2018 07:03

So let's keep the thread bumped

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/04/2018 07:16

We saw with Grenfell loud sailings and empty promises from the government. Then another news story displaced it and nothing changed.

Keep signing :) keep pushing.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/04/2018 13:55

wailings silly ipad, not sailings!

Anyway bump for those who haven't signed :)

HelenaDove · 20/04/2018 14:23

BadKitten Check out #FridgeManBores on Twitter that hashtag has screenshots of the abhorrent racism towards the Grenfell residents.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/04/2018 15:19

Thanks Helena, I will do.

milliemolliemou · 20/04/2018 17:05

On top of which the petition calls for recompense for those who have lost jobs/been refused NHS care etc so still worth signing.

Butchmanda · 20/04/2018 17:10

Good on the Guardian for highlighting this issue. Even then, it's bloody taken a while. It's chilling. They deliberately destroyed the landing cards which were held in a basement somewhere. And we only know that because of a whistleblower. Unbelievable.

HappyLollipop · 20/04/2018 17:24

Signed, both sets of my grandparents and my father came from Grenada to the UK (my mum was born here once they settled) id be heartbroken if they tried to deport my dad, although I know that wouldn't happen it's not hard to imagine. My grandparents worked hard to help to rebuild this country when they asked for the help from commonwealth counties, it's appalling that they are now being used to appease the racists in this country.

CrustyCob · 20/04/2018 19:34

It's over seventy years since the Home Office ordered the deportation of Chinese Sailors from Liverpool. They had worked on the notorious Atlantic convoys in WW2. People lost their fathers overnight. many thought they had been abandoned. It was decades before they found out what really happened over those few days.
www.mix-d.org/museum/timeline/compulsory-repatriation-of-chinese-seamen-in-liverpool

I'm reminded of it again reading the Windrush story.
Saddened and angry to read of such shocking treatment.

DancingLedge · 20/04/2018 19:50

People have been deported.
People have been charged huge Home Office fees.
People have been sacked, and lost their homes.
People have been to relatives funerals abroad, and been ,out of the blue, refused reentry to the country they have lived and worked in for the last half century.
People who've been British taxpayers their entire working lives have been denied NHS cancer treatment.

Read these real life stories www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/apr/20/its-inhumane-the-windrush-victims-who-have-lost-jobs-homes-and-loved-ones. if you feel ok that this has been done by our government, in our names, then don't sign the petition.

It's not resolved, it's not over. This is the clearest case of " all it needs for evil to triumph is that good people do nothing" that's happened in UK for a long time.

Words are cheap. Nothings been sorted.

And you know what, even if these people did have a resolution, ( which they don't) we need to send an unequivocal message to our government: we're not Nazis, we don't do this shit

Theworldisfullofgs · 20/04/2018 20:06

Windrush reminds me of how the ghurkas were treated.

DancingLedge · 20/04/2018 21:02
