Windrush Petition

Theworldisfullofidiots · 13/04/2018 23:29

Please would you consider signing this petition to provide amnesty for the windrush children who either lived most of their whole lives here or in some cases were born here but the home office has lost their paper work. The home office is a shambles but being successful in creating their hostile environment.
These people have lived their whole lives here because we asked their parents to work here. They had commonwealth status and then the rules were changed .

This has just been on the news. 😊

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/04/2018 07:16

I'm glad it is still making the news - the news cycle is going so fast at the moment, that things keep falling off that should still be in it. However, this is such a big issue - deporting people who have full rights to live here.

I agree that immigration officials struggle.

MoonriseKingdom · 17/04/2018 07:48

On Newsnight last night there was a very uncomfortable sounding Tory MP who was trying to suggest everything would be fine and easy to sort out now. Let’s hope this translates into proper action.

EdgeOf17 · 17/04/2018 09:25

Signed - i read about this yesterday with an open mouth, thank you OP for directing me to the petition.

It's an absolute fucking disgrace

157427 now.

I thought the petition would slow down today. Glad it hasn't.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/04/2018 13:01

A government representative was in utter denial this morning on radio 4. Yet on LBC callers were talking about utterly heartbreaking situations.

These are people, not paperwork.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/04/2018 13:07

I'm so proud of all the mners signing this petition. I feel like together, we are helping make a difference. By keeping this going, it's helping to keep this in the media and already the government are making u turns.

For those who haven't signed UK government petitions before, they are really easy to do so and there's no unwanted emails afterwards.

Enigmam · 17/04/2018 13:09

@OhYouBadBadKitten You are so right. Whenever I hear people ask what are the numbers I think to myself these are not numbers. These are people! People who have children, grandchildren have worked and have paid into the system and this is what you get.

ratspeaker · 17/04/2018 13:12

Interesting and unomfortable reading.

Thanks for the link. I'm actually disappointed that more people haven't signed tbh. This is inhumane.

Topseyt · 17/04/2018 13:41

Signed.

I have been following this with horror for the last couple of days.

It is utterly disgraceful what the Home Office has been doing. It makes me ashamed to be British.

We invited these people to work in this country between 1948 and 1971 to live and work here. Many arrived as children travelling on their parents’ passports rather than with one of their own. That was allowed in those days and wasn't at all unusual.

I think that Theresa May's immigration reforms whilst she was Home Secretary must have been poorly researched if they did not pick up the possibility that this sort of thing could happen.

Theresa May’s Home Office quietly deleted a key clause protecting the Windrush from deportation. Consultation was not done. Parliament was not involved.

Topseyt · 17/04/2018 14:29

Well, I wish I could say that I'm surprised, but I'm not.

It is inhumane, and seems deliberate.

Theresa May does have form for this sort of thing, and for trying (and sometimes succeeding) to stop Parliamentary scrutiny and debate.

Theworldisfullofgs · 17/04/2018 14:43

I suspect the will of the people = the will of Theresa May

Actually, I think she struggles to think on her feet and argue a case so avoids anything where she might have to justify her thinking.

Theworldisfullofgs · 17/04/2018 17:16

Over 161000 on the petition but given the revelations today, I think it needs to keep going.

plominoagain · 17/04/2018 17:31

Signed . Disgusting behaviour. Not that I'm surprised though . Not when this is such an easy way to hit their targets

kateemo · 17/04/2018 18:04

The Home Office / immigration is not fit for purpose. It needs reform immediately. I say this as a naturalised citizen whose many contacts were supposed to be straightforward as I am a "desirable" immigrant. £5K+ later and now I have to watch as my parents' generation are so shamefully treated.

Peregrina · 17/04/2018 18:20

There is a lesson here for EU citizens - keep your paperwork which says that you have Leave to Remain, (or whatever the Govt agrees on) because if they can't be trusted to look after citizens who were invited to come here, don't expect them to look after those who came under Freedom of Movement.

HelenaDove · 17/04/2018 19:11

This is absolutely disgusting DISGUSTING.

SabineUndine · 17/04/2018 19:16

I think the government thought nobody would care. For my generation these could be my colleagues, neighbours and friends. And you know, I wondered who’s next?

HelenaDove · 17/04/2018 19:20

" I wondered who’s next?"

Thats what is seriously worrying me.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 17/04/2018 19:27

Signed and shared. Honestly, who needs the National Front/Britain First when you have Amber Rudd and her unpleasant chums actually kicking out people who have lived and worked in the UK for decades.
