SaucyJane - by offering a kind, open, non judgemental hand. By seeing past the aggression to the human, by not fighting hate with hate, by being the bigger-man and not rising to the challenge, by not calling people scum or vile or whatever else, by having compassion, by persevering, by not giving up, by being trustworthy and honest and kind, by being brave, by connecting.
On an aside - I went to uni with a girl who was a traveller. She chose not to live in halls, but in a caravan nearby the uni. She got a first class honours degree. She was one of the nicest people I've ever met. Also one of the most genuine and kind. I know she's an exception as many travellers do not value education in a way which might enable this, but how unfair to make assumptions about her based on her background.
I also know other travellers. Sadly, I've known two who have pretended not to be from the travelling community, who have even joined in the prejudicial discussions at work, so not to be identified as a 'pikey' and risk the labelling and prejudice against them that might entail
