to wonder where all the metalheads have gone?

I never see any metallers anymore (long hair, metal shirts, leather/denim jackets, patches etc). When I was younger there were loads of us. Now you don't see any, they have completely disappeared as have all the great venues. I am still one (albeit old) but I miss seeing young metalheads in all their gear. Where have they all gone?

waves over here! I still wear my old band tshirts from the 80’s/90’s, although my 14 year old DD has appropriated some of them.
Still wearing my new rock boots that I got for my 21st!

HouseOfGoldandBones · 11/04/2018 17:42

They're still there, but "metal" is such a diverse genre these days. So there's the emo kids, alternative kids etc.

Download is still selling out every year, so I don't think there's less of us, but looking at the diversity of folk at Download & gigs, they are definitely hiding in plain site!

MrsJayy · 11/04/2018 17:43

I guess they grew old up Dh passed his Metal love to Dd1 , dh said he couldn't have his hair long because of his job but in reality his mum wouldn't let him Grin

CMOTDibbler · 11/04/2018 17:43

They are still out there. I'm taking my 12 year old to Download this year, and am looking forward to buying him his first pair of para boots and skinny black jeans for the occasion

JustGettingStarted · 11/04/2018 17:43

I only see them at gigs and festivals! I think a lot of them have shorter hair and the shirts and battle vests only come out for gigs.

I certainly don't look metal! I'm a middle aged mum with sensible hair.

Pinkywoo · 11/04/2018 17:44

Oops just read you wondered where the young ones are, don't think that applies to me anymore! I think they're probably still out there just wearing whatever the new version of the old metal outfit is.

AreYouTerfEnough · 11/04/2018 17:44

I saw one today. A chap with very long hair, black leather jacket and a metal vibe about him.

midgetgem2211 · 11/04/2018 17:45

I'm here too!

Saw Evanescence at Hammersmith Apollo earlier in the week and although not strictly metal, there were identifiable metalists there in addition to goth /alt & non-tribal

Darkbendis · 11/04/2018 17:49

waves I am still around Grin

member · 11/04/2018 17:50

And I agree that it is mainly festivals and gigs.

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 11/04/2018 17:50

We are still around!

I was more of 90s metaller but I'm sorry I think I just grew out of that kind of music.

There was a time when the clunking/grinding/dissonance of say, Machinehead sounded like a genius reflection of what was going on in my angry teenaged soul. Then when I hit my early twenties I discovered folk music and realised, perhaps I was more melancholy than angry. Never looked back.Grin

In Scotland, they're wild camping (and getting "rescued" because they look like a suicide cult...)

Northern Sweden is jammed packed with the knuckle draggers. Can't swing a denim jacket without hitting at least 10 of em with metal band badge.

MrPerkinsisaprick · 11/04/2018 17:57

You're not going to the right pubs and clubs.

What I've always loved about metalheads is you can pick a 'look' aged 14 and wear it for the rest of your life 😊I went to a metal festival a few years ago where most of the bands were 'vintage' (Iron Maiden, Slayer, Motley Crue, Alice Cooper etc).

Crowd full of men from teens to 60s with long hair, leather jackets, denim jerkins with patches etc.

I rarely go to my old metal pubs/clubs any more but when I do I'm guaranteed to see the old looks (with some new ones) and people that I've known there for 20 years!

Even “folkies” have a bit of an identifiable aesthetic that you only see at folk festivals (I know it’s not true of all)

member · 11/04/2018 18:03

My dd1 is developing a taste for symphonic metal; she’d love Sweden/Finland/Netherlands!

MissWilmottsGhost · 11/04/2018 18:03

That's hilarious that's my mummy Grin

I still like metal, as does DH. Our 6 year old DD says "please can we have the shouty-men music on, mummy?"

It's true we no longer look particularly metal-ish DH always had nerdy glasses and short hair anyway but thats middle age for you

I do still wear big black boots and leather jackets.

MissWilmottsGhost · 11/04/2018 18:05

Sorry I meant withmymummy

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 11/04/2018 18:07

We have proper old school Goths in my town.

And the occasional metaller including my two who have a collection of Iron Maiden, Ramones, AC/DC and Nirvana t shirts.

I'm the middle aged bird wearing band/gaming t shirts who should know better.Wink

YouTheCat · 11/04/2018 18:07

There's loads where I drink. But then it's a proper old rock bar with bands on on a Friday and good beer.
