to wonder where all the metalheads have gone?

I never see any metallers anymore (long hair, metal shirts, leather/denim jackets, patches etc). When I was younger there were loads of us. Now you don't see any, they have completely disappeared as have all the great venues. I am still one (albeit old) but I miss seeing young metalheads in all their gear. Where have they all gone?

What was the name of that rock/metal nightclub in Manchester called?

Think its closed........my memory is not as good as it was

Todamhottoday · 12/04/2018 11:11

Oh was it called Jillys or something? Rock club world.

Yambabe · 12/04/2018 11:12

Jillys then Rockworld then Jillys again. Gone now sadly.

If you're in Manchester Rebellion and the Ruby Lounge have decent rock nights and Grand Central is still a rock pub.

YouTheCat · 12/04/2018 11:13

I miss the Mayfair.

x2boys · 12/04/2018 11:14

Rock world Todam but the downstairs bit was jillys I spent a good part of my late teens and early twenties in there and did a few all nighters Grin

PurpleCrowbar · 12/04/2018 11:14

Jillys or Rockworld. Think it depended which bit you were in?

I frequented Le Phono, Jillys, Edwards No 8, The Banshee, Rock City...

x2boys · 12/04/2018 11:18

Yeah I went to Rock city a couple of times that was Nottingham wasent it? My sister was at Derby university so not to far .

Todamhottoday · 12/04/2018 11:26

Ah the Mayfair......many a happy night there indeed, seen plenty of bands there after a few drinks in the Jubilee .

Get some tops from the Handyside and away you go

Todamhottoday · 12/04/2018 11:29

Yambabe thanks for the other suggestions, sadly I am a little far away to have a night out in Manchester, but good nights in Jillys.

theknackster · 12/04/2018 11:30

PurpleCrowbar

The Banshee was great. Ritz on a monday, university rock soc 'disco' on a tuesday, Banshee on wednesday/thursday, Jilly's on friday (queing up next to the people in tuxes and ballgowns - very odd combination!), the UMIST heavy on saturday and sunday at the Phoenix.

A misspent youth, right there. sniffs

Magicstar1 · 12/04/2018 11:32

I know loads...one of my friends is even singer for a death metal band. You need to go to some bike rallies OP...that seems to be where most of them are these days lol.

x2boys · 12/04/2018 11:32

Ah the grand central we used to go the subway which was downstairs to the grand central they used to do a special offer every night of the week like 50 p for a vodka etc good time...

x2boys · 12/04/2018 11:36

When would you have been going to the Ritz and jillys etc theknackster? I was there from 94 ish to late 90,s whilst I was doing my nurse training and a couple of years after Grin

theknackster · 12/04/2018 11:42

89-95ish, I guess...more often in the early years when we were younger and fitter Grin

x2boys · 12/04/2018 11:46

And could stay up all night and with no ill affects ?Wink

SistersOfPercy · 12/04/2018 12:12

Do any of you recall The Highwayman at Threapwood Staffordshire? Cracking place, once frequented by Metallica themselves. I had many nights `i don't remember in there 😂

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 12/04/2018 12:13

I'm here! 👋

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 12/04/2018 12:15

Jilly’s! 1983-4. I’m more prog than metal, but good memories.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 12/04/2018 12:17

There was a record shop across the road from Jilly’s, round the back and downstairs, where I bought all my Led Zep, Rush, Magnum and Marillion vinyl. What was that called? I loved it in there. All long hair and patchouli oil...

Queenofthestress · 12/04/2018 12:18

I'm dating one so they are still out there Grin

LittleRedWagon1 · 12/04/2018 12:27

DH is full on metal head, hair down to his bum, leathers and denims galore 🖤🤘😍
His hair is so long it gets put in a ponytail and plaited for work 🤣. Apparently the little old ladies he helps (He’s an ECA on the ambulances) love his hair 🤣, it’s the first thing I noticed about him 20 odd years ago 😍

DD1, 10 yo, is an aspiring metal head, she owns no less that 4 different leather jackets and asked for DM’s for her 10th birthday 🖤. DH is very proud.

DD2 is more pop and pink much to DH’s horror.
I’m a happy medium, more rock than anything else.

notacooldad · 12/04/2018 12:28

Well I'm still around with my long hair and Motörhead t shirt.
My local is a heavy metal/rock. Loads of up,and coming metal bands are breaking through.
Style wise, kids and young people seem a lot more conversation in their dress than when I was a teenager when NWOBHM was born.

DS2 loves Judas Priest, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black sabbath etc. However he has short hair and dresses more like Graham Binnet than Ritchie Blackmore!

Although they are more of a AOR band but I was rather surprised when DS2 knew all of the words to Journey's Separate Ways and the Wheel in the sky when he was 15!

theknackster · 12/04/2018 12:36

WiseUpJanetWeiss

'Powercuts'. I've got some vinyl LPs still in cellophane from one of their 'sales' somewhere...you'll buy any old tosh if it's 10p, it seems Blush

Fireandflames666 · 12/04/2018 12:45

I wonder the Same. I'm alternative/metal (in to music, piercings, tattoos, Dark clothes, leather jackets) and rarely see metalheads around where I live.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 12/04/2018 12:46

Gosh I don’t remember that name. I had Phoenix in my mind but I may be getting that mixed up with a dodgy venue further down Oxford Road.
