Loads of shops, bars and restaurants are now allowing dogs in them.
I'm very allergic and one of my dc is too.
It's so widespread now. Such little thought for those with allergies.

...just adjusting my tin hat.....

If we all tip toe around people's allergies, no one would ever get out of bed.

It's bad enough dealing with all their "newly discovered" food intolerances.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 12/04/2018 18:38

icky

Oh, you’re right. It was probably the chefs adding dog hair to their food. How silly of me.

Smudge100 · 12/04/2018 18:38

Only ever seen a dog in a restaurant in France, occasionally the odd dog in a rural area like the Lake District. It’s not illegal as commonly believed for dogs to be in an area where food is served, only for them to be in food preparation areas. I don’t mind dogs but i think taking them to pubs and restaurants is a bit like taking them to a cinema or an art gallery. What are they going to get out of it? Dogs like going for walks or chilling at home. However, they are infinitely preferable in public to badly behaved children and parents who think their kids’ brattish behaviour is endearing.

Starlilly88 · 12/04/2018 18:40

There are special menus in restaurants for food allergies and religious beliefs. At the end of the day, it’s about everyone being considerate and tolerant of each other. And someone with a genuine medical condition can’t do anything about it.

Icanttakemuchmore · 12/04/2018 18:43

I wouldn't want to buy clothes from shops that have had dogs brushing passed the clothes and I wouldn't want to eat in a cafe where there are dogs inside either.

FaveNumberIs2 · 12/04/2018 18:54

It’s getting out of hand. I was in a local coffee bar/eateries on Monday lunchtime with girlie (off work due to school holidays). We were having coffee and had decided to order lunch too, ham and cheese panini with salad and had just started eating when in came two women with a pram. They sat down two tables away and pulled the pram up to the table. When they got their lunch, they opened to pram to reveal a DOG! and they shared their lunches with it.

And no one said anything!!!

manicmij · 12/04/2018 18:57

Not too keen on dogs in eating environment but don't mind them in the drinking/bar area of pubs. Do like dogs have had a few over the years but appreciate not all dog owners respect how others may feel about them. Most dogs I have encountered when eating are guide dogs of some kind and basically just sit beneath the table of their owner. As to allergy sufferers, pubs often have cats to keep mice down, or a dog behind the bar.and you wouldn't be aware. I am almost allergic to cigarette smoke, I just need to stand next to someone who has been smoking and I am sick. I hate lifts! Can't avoid everything in life that other folkk enjoy though.

idobelieveinfairies86 · 12/04/2018 19:03

I'm allergic to the sun (sort of) so I don't go out unless I have a sun brolly. i also have hayfever (both tree and grass) so I take antihistamine.
I think it's a tad U but u have a right to be annoyed by what ever u choose.

I'm a little annoyed that I can't demand the sun feck off between march and October but I guess ppl wouldn't be 2 happy so I put up with it lol
xx

@smudge100

The dogs who don’t like chilling at home (separation anxiety, fearful and stressed when left alone) get to be with their humans, and are less stressed. Their humans get to eat out or do stuff they otherwise couldn’t because of their anxious dog who can’t be left. Win-win. The dogs don’t appreciate the art or a pint or two, but their humans do.

BunsyGirl · 12/04/2018 19:15

I’ve been hospitalised on several occasions as my allergy to dogs is so severe. I do my best to avoid contact but it’s not always possible. Internal flights in the US freak me out as they allow pets in the cabin. If I come into contact with a dog I often have breathing difficulties for days afterwards. What is really difficult to deal with is the attitude of dog owners. Many treat it as a personal insult when they find out that I am allergic. Really wish people could be more understanding but, as is evident from some of the comments, a lot don’t care.

TattyTShirt · 12/04/2018 19:23

I don't understand your post Bunsy. Are you saying nobody should own a dog because you are allergic to them?

LakieLady · 12/04/2018 19:26

My dog is the least threatening, fluffiest most ridiculously looking little creature I have ever come across

I think we need to see a pic, Allmyshildren, so that we can judge.

My dog makes the world a better place - people smile all the time when they see him, even people who dislike dogs love him - he's not smelly or slobbery, he's very gentle and so handsome. We leave him outside shops with one of us but the staff beg us to bring him in, even places like Mint velvet, Jigsaw, the Doc Martin shop, the local gift shops, it's lovely taking him out and seeing people's face light up when they see him.

BunsyGirl · 12/04/2018 19:46

TattyTShirt NO! I am asking them to have some understanding and not take it as a personal insult if I ask you to keep your dog away from me!

BunsyGirl · 12/04/2018 19:50

MirriVan - Do you think I asked to be allergic?! I can assure you that I have lots of fun...just not when I am near a dog and can’t breath. Why do you think it is appropriate to insult people with serious medical conditions. Pure nastiness.

reallyanotherone · 12/04/2018 20:06

Most of the dog population is a doodle or a poo now and they’re all hypoallergenic so there’s no problem.

Sarcasm, before anyone takes me seriously. Drives mad this odd belief that by crossing a poodle with a bog standard dog like a labrador you magically get a non shedding labrador that nobody is allergic to.

I have a yorkie, btw. So i can take mine anywhere, what with him being non-shedding with a hypoallergenic coat Wink.

TattyTShirt · 12/04/2018 20:09

Bunsy believe me - my dog would be going nowhere near you! I train all my dogs to ignore people and dogs unless invited, by them, to interact and even then its only when I decide he can.

However if I found myself and my dog on the same plane as you there is no way I'd ask for him to be ousted. There's nothing I can do if airlines allow my dog to board a plane with an allergy sufferer.

I have hay fever. I wouldn't demand all trees, grass and flowers become extinct.

Sparklycurtainpole · 12/04/2018 20:25

I have no objection to assistance dogs whatsoever but there is a big but! Our local cafes are all used by a lady who trains guide dogs. The dogs are always amazing and it’s so lovely to see them develop. However there’s also another lady who constantly brings in a ‘play therapy’ dog who is probably the biggest dog I’ve ever seen in my life. I think it’s a Newfoundland but it seems bigger even that those I’ve seen before. It wears its ‘play therapy’ coat but it’s usually there with its owners over the weekend with no ‘playmates’. This I still understand as obviously the dog needs experience of multiple settings. My objections however are:

  1. The dog absolutely stinks. If you have your back to them arriving you know the dog has come in as you can smell it from across the cafe.
  2. The owner has multiple towels she uses to wipe the dog’s drool up and stores these used towels on the settees and soft furnishings.
  3. The dog often shakes its jowels and absolutely covers the area around it in thick drool. One lady customer had her tights and handbag absolutely covered in it when she was sat at the next table (she was there first)
  4. The cafe is quite tightly packed and the dog takes up a considerable amount of traffic room as it always lies across the main thoroughfare
  5. The owners sit there smiling proudly and oblivious like they own the most amazing creature on earth rather than a very smelly dog who covers its surroundings in drool.

Every time I sit down in that place (whatever day or time we choose) we seem to get the dog in there, yet every time I walk past it’s never in there! 😩😄

MsJudgemental · 12/04/2018 20:25

I live in a city and all the shops round our way seem to let dogs in now. Hate it.

BunsyGirl · 12/04/2018 20:40

TattyTShirt....but would you move seats to the other end of the plane?

lljkk · 12/04/2018 20:43

This thread is making me realise how very little I ever go to shops, bars and restaurants.

Hmm... maybe I should get a dog. Grin

TattyTShirt · 12/04/2018 20:44

Bunsy. Why would I do that? I don't have the problem. You have the problem- you move!

BunsyGirl · 12/04/2018 20:51

To give people an example of dog owner unreasonableness. I once went to view a house whilst pregnant. Unable to take anti-histamines (which don’t prevent my allergy but do dampen it down for a short period of time) due to pregnancy. Seller of house has a dog. DH asks them to keep the dog away while we quickly view the house. Seller gets the hump and insists that I won’t be allergic to her dog. I’m six months gone so not an insignificant bump but still seller is arsey about it. We view house as quickly as possible. Sure enough, I start to wheeze shortly after. Why the lack of empathy and understanding? As I said, some dog owners take it as a personal insult. Please just be understanding. Oh, and before anybody asks how I could live in a house after a dog, the answer is that the house would have to be deep cleaned and all carpets/curtains replaced. Our last three houses have been new builds so as to avoid that.

BunsyGirl · 12/04/2018 20:53

TattyTShirt... because the safest thing for me would be for you to sit at one end with your dog and for me to sit at the other. I don’t think I need to say anymore on the subject, you have shown everyone the kind of person that you. Completely selfish with no consideration for others.
