Loads of shops, bars and restaurants are now allowing dogs in them.
I'm very allergic and one of my dc is too.
It's so widespread now. Such little thought for those with allergies.

I agree with Frequency I cant understand why anyone takes their dog into a pub We take our dog into a pub because we meet lots of people through our dog and it's generally enjoyable to socialise that way, even when people are very odd, we still find it amusing. If we didn't wish to converse with other people we'd stay at home.

I agree with Frequency I cant understand why anyone takes their dog into a pub

Because there’s a really nice walk along from my house that has a pub as half way point? And what’s the point of leaving the dog behind to walk an hour to a pub.

I tend to sit in the garden as it suits our dog better. But if i got caught in a sudden rainstorm i’d appreciate being allowed inside.

We tend to take our dog out for the day. We spend a couple of hours walking then go for lunch. Dog is tired and lies sleeping under the table. By the time we have eaten dog has had a rest and off we go again. I don't want to leave my dog in the car.

Why do people go to dog friendly pubs then complain there are dogs in there? Why not go to a pub where dogs are not allowed? There are plenty of pubs that don't allow dogs.

Allmyshilldren · 12/04/2018 10:52

We take our dog to the pub because leaving your dog alone for long stretches of time (longer than 4-5 hrs) regularly is cruel and likely to cause behavioural problems. He likes being with us and we like being with him, the pub allows him in so why wouldn’t we take him? Most pubs have dining areas where dogs are not allowed so there is a place for everyone to be comfortable.

Ploppymoodypants · 12/04/2018 11:00

Surely it’s about the dog and owners and their behaviours rather than a blanket ‘dogs’ issue.

A polite clean dog asleep under a cafe table outside, with midfull owner keeping it on lead and away from others, what’s the problem.

Filthy, hyper, over friendly or aggressive dog, allowed to invade other people space and shed mud and slobber on everything. Obviously not acceptable.

Same as children really.

IrmaFayLear · 12/04/2018 11:09

We once went to a pub with a prominent sign outside proclaiming it to be the most dog-friendly pub in the county.

My dog was just lying under the table yet the couple at the next table were glaring, huffing and then complained to the bar staff about dogs. Fgs go somewhere else then!

I’m afraid that the grannyname poster just doesn’t sound very pleasant. The sort of person who whisks away your cup and saucer if you visit and washes it up immediately, and who plumps up the cushions you’ve squashed before you’ve left.

There’s something slightly off about dog haters; they just don’t seem to be full of the milk of human kindness.

TattyTShirt · 12/04/2018 11:31

Re the hysterical posts about all dogs having fleas.

I'm highly allergic to all insect bites. I can categorically state that none of my dogs have ever had fleas. If they had I would know about it! For the clueless non dog owners.... dogs are given flea and tic repellent every couple of months so fleas cannot live on them.

Sure some people don't bother treating their dogs for fleas. Most do! Nobody wants to live with fleas. Those who don't are the dog owners that everyone (even dog owners) complain about. You know get a cute puppy and don't bother with it hence the untrained, flea ridden mutts we all complain about. You are unlikely to see one of these dogs with their families in a pub. They are left to roam and cause a nuisance. Their owner will be nowhere in sight.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 12/04/2018 11:35

One of my dogs had fleas once.
It’s been sorted.

I had fleas occasionally when I was a child, grandmother had dogs and a shabby house.

I survived.

Loyaultemelie · 12/04/2018 15:07

Around here there's not that many really dog friendly places (dogs welcome at outside tables that kind of thing) but I've noticed mainland uk is much more so. Doesn't bother me at all but it must be a pain for people with allergies, however my DN has other serious allergies like pps which he has to cope with, I suppose people with dogs are in the same boat.
Liz70 Middleham is quite something isn't it? Grin

It’s funny because I’ve often noticed there’s something off about dog lovers. I know a few people who get on much better with dogs than people. They are all total control freaks and I’m sure the reason they love their dogs is because they don’t speak back or have opinions.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 12/04/2018 15:25

I hate eating places where dogs are allowed. And it’s definitely getting more difficult to find places to eat now where there’s no dogs.

Catsandkids78 · 12/04/2018 15:33

Can see one from my desk right now - don’t have mine in with me today . Love working here for this reason 🤗

Allmyshilldren · 12/04/2018 16:21

@NotUmbongo The majority of eating establishments in the UK don’t allow dogs. Do you live elsewhere or do you eat all your meals in the park?

And at a restaurant you are far more likely to get sick from the person preparing the food, the food itself (eg oysters) or an unclean food prep environment than you are from a dog sitting under a table nearby.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 12/04/2018 16:23

No I live on the coast near beaches so there’s fucking hundreds of dogs. I get it, the restaurants would lose a lot of business if they didn’t allow them, but I’m fed up of pulling stray hairs out of my food.

missyB1 · 12/04/2018 16:30

catsandkids how lovely to have a dog at work! Smile probably promotes a calming low stress atmosphere.

Catsandkids78 · 12/04/2018 16:32

We usually have about 12 in , all in separate office compartments ( I’m in a shared space! ) made so many friends through the dogs it’s awesome!

MrsTylerJoseph · 12/04/2018 16:32

I holiday in the Lakes now purely as it's so dog friendly. Great to be able to go in cafes, shops and pubs with her.

MrsTylerJoseph · 12/04/2018 16:33

Oh and local Starbucks now dog friendly.

Bunpea · 12/04/2018 17:39

I love seeing dogs about and about with their owners. They calm things down, make stressful situations better (such as doctors or dentists waiting rooms), and generally are very life-enhancing IMO.

But then I'm not allergic to them - how common is that? What do people with allergies do when they encounter assistance dogs?

Starlilly88 · 12/04/2018 18:00

I am yet another of those with pet (and other) allergies so try and avoid dogs where possible. I was also brought up with a relative who regularly used to have 20 dogs roaming round her house (the house smelt hideous) so I do have a dog smell issue and hate eating with a dog nearby. So I avoid places where I know they let dogs in. I just wish places would put a sign in the window saying they allow dogs so I can easily avoid. My DS is also terrified of dogs having been chased by one as a toddler when the owner couldn’t control it. Nothing we can do about the dog issue but I think there should at least be designated areas in larger pubs and cafes so doggy people can sit apart from those with allergies/phobias

Starlilly88 · 12/04/2018 18:10

And it is a complete pain having a pet hair allergy. We always have to phone in advance if we want to stay in hotels to check they have pet free rooms. If any dog hairs get on my clothing from a seat where a dog has been or a dog brushing past, I have to change straightaway and wash my clothes. It’s no fun sneezing all day as anti histamines often don’t work after being exposed to the allergen, and I’m not taking them just in case. It’s life and I deal with it but I think some people don’t realise how severe and miserable allergies can be.

Lily01 · 12/04/2018 18:16

I have 2 well mannered dogs but would not take them into restaurants.
Maybe outside seating at pubs.were we have to put up with smokers
I can taste it while eating yuck.

lolalola19 · 12/04/2018 18:18

As you say OP there are places that allow dogs, there are places that don't - just go to one of the places that doesn't allow dogs if you have issues, I enjoy taking my dogs out and it's rare to find somewhere that does allow them - at least places are catering for everyone now 😬

lolalola19 · 12/04/2018 18:21

IrmaFayLear love that!

I live with two dogs and that doesn't happen.
