To ask if you've heard of a potato scallop

When I was a teenager I'd quite often buy a potato scallop for 20p from the chippy on the walk home from swimming. It was a slice of battered potato and was delicious. Where I live now no one has heard of them. Have you and if yes where do you live? :)

Ohwhatfuckeryisthisnow - re the fish cakes it depends where you go. Some do whole fish by bit many. Most do thinner slices of fish so that the potatoes sit better around then. Flakes of fish aren't the same though, needs to be a bit chunkier than flakes.

Uuugh why did anyone have to mention pizza crunch??? Now I'm starving!!

Mmmm... pizza crunch supper and gravy... get in mah belly!

Findingross · 10/04/2018 20:10

Grew up in the Midlands. Absolutely loved them - almost as good as the batter bits!

milkysmum · 10/04/2018 20:13

Yes we have scallops in our local chippy- they are about 50p and delicious. We are in a village in Lancashire.

RedDwarves · 10/04/2018 20:15

Yep. In Australia. Every fish and chip shop has them.

susieguert · 10/04/2018 20:31

Ooh yes we used to get them from the chippy in Cambridge as kids but I've mates who grew up there and had never heard of them, their loss!!

Duckies · 10/04/2018 20:40

Another Australian. We used to call them Grease Blobs at home, and then my Mum accidentally ordered them by that name!

They are also a muse of Aussie hip hop

JiltedJohnsJulie · 10/04/2018 20:43

Also know as a Smack!

iklboo · 10/04/2018 20:43

DH has just brought me one in!!! Mmmmmmmm.

TheUncommonReader · 10/04/2018 20:51

Good to see some fellow Lancastrians pointing out that it is a dab! I too used enjoy a dab and chips as the only vegetarian option at the chip shop.

Oldraver · 10/04/2018 20:53

Yes I first had them in Brum...though the chippy we went to wouldn't do them on Mondays..or the weekend or whatever

greenlavender · 10/04/2018 20:54

Yes, South Wakes. Yum yum.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 10/04/2018 20:55

ooooh.... a scollop batch with extra salt & vinegar... yummmmm

neverhadanymarblestolose · 10/04/2018 21:20

Yep I've had them from chippies in Chester, Liverpool, Preston and Birmingham. I've also had mini versions from Waitrose, although they don't taste the same without the fresh fried batter.

halfwitpicker · 10/04/2018 21:35

Low carb, too.

Heismyopendoor · 10/04/2018 21:49

Sorry angry I mentioned it and sent DH out for one tonight and it was so good! We live a few minutes walk away from a chippy and can smell it ALL the time :S

fopper · 10/04/2018 22:13

They are lovely, but I was really confused when MIL said she was cooking 'scallops' for tea as I'd never heard of potato scallops before. She's up north and I'm a southerner. I was expecting actual scallops but but I think I preferred her version!

moofolk · 10/04/2018 22:19

I really want one now. Greasy with st and vinegar. I'm in Manchester they have them in all the chippies here.

Maddest one I ever had was in Birmingham though. Bear in mind if was a while back but cost 10p and was the size of a fish! Green and white awninged chippy opposite Digbeth St bus station.

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 10/04/2018 22:30

My DIL had never heard of one when she first met our family (she's from darn sarf, we're in the Black Country).
That was 20 years ago - and last weekend I watched her devour two (she's usually a very small eater) each the size of her hand... Grin
It's the thing that has to be on the menu whenever DS and family visit - as DIL arrives with her mouth watering..!!

EinsteinsArousedSausagesHCB · 10/04/2018 22:31

I'm in Lancashire and have always known them as dabs.

RockinRobinTweets · 10/04/2018 22:39

I really want a pineapple fritter and batter bits now, please.

Must stay away from the food threads!

I had never heard of a potato scallop until I was a student and I’ve never eaten one. It sounds like a round chip

YellowBucket · 10/04/2018 22:42

Fritters or Scallops here. Less chip shops do them now but I always get excited when old potatoes are frying as it means they are back on the menu. New potatoes are apparently too small for decent fritters.

YellowBucket · 10/04/2018 22:43

Sorry, meant to add we are in Suffolk

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 10/04/2018 22:44

Yes my nanny used to make them they were delicious

She was from Yorkshire I thought they were a Northern thing I have never seen them in a chip shop in London

Marlboroandmalbec34 · 10/04/2018 22:48

Yep sell them at the chippy down the road...West Yorkshire Smile
