To ask if you've heard of a potato scallop

When I was a teenager I'd quite often buy a potato scallop for 20p from the chippy on the walk home from swimming. It was a slice of battered potato and was delicious. Where I live now no one has heard of them. Have you and if yes where do you live? :)

wetwang it's called Huss or rock salmon elsewhere. It's various small shark species, but I think legally chip shops are supposed to label it as what actually is i.e. dogfish or bull Huss, so they don't often sell it because customer's don't like the name!

ChasedByBees · 10/04/2018 18:45

I loved them as a kid. I was in the midlands and have moved away. Haven’t seen them for years.

DoctorWhatTheFuck · 10/04/2018 18:46

I love chips in batter, but the place that did them closed and if I ask elsewhere they look at me like I’m not all there.

moofolk · 10/04/2018 18:50

Heaven in the mouth. And so cheap. I get one to eat in the chippy while everything else is being packed up. Nom nom.

bobstersmum · 10/04/2018 18:50

It's a dab where I live in lancs and I love them!

ProfYaffle · 10/04/2018 18:50

Yep - grew up in Warrington, used to love a scallop. They're called Smacks in Wigan as I discovered when walking to the chippy with a friend and he asked 'Do you wanta smack?' which I took to be a threat of violence.....

GreenTulips · 10/04/2018 18:52

Ye see now I want want covered in vinegar and lots of salt until it sticks to the paper!

Can't remember the last one I had one .... will check the local chippy

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 10/04/2018 18:52

They call them fritters in Glasgow.

LunaDonkey · 10/04/2018 18:54

I’m in South Cheshire and they are called Smacks here.

It’s made for interesting conversations with colleagues on ocassional Friday lunchtime chippy trips.

It seems to be a very localised term though - even friends elsewhere in Cheshire just call them scallops for example. And I could demolish one now.

dontcallmelen · 10/04/2018 18:54

When I was a child many years ago in London , the chippy did rock & chips or scallops my dad always used to make them as well.

tierraJ · 10/04/2018 18:54

My mum used to make potato scallops, her family are Northerners.

GoJohnnyGoGoGoGo · 10/04/2018 18:55

Oh yes. I grew up in Coventry.

Ginnotginger · 10/04/2018 19:01

I'm from the West Midlands, all my local chippies sell scallops (used to be called Klondikes in one particular chippy).
I also miss pineapple fritters and banana fritters from the chippy, some chinese takeaways still sell banana fritters but they just aren't the same as the chipshop ones.

jmh740 · 10/04/2018 19:12

I'm in Lancashire I call them a dab. They're delicious I often get a small portion of chips so I can have a dab too.

ProfYaffle · 10/04/2018 19:14

Ooh, yes, pineapple fritters, I'd forgotten about those! And different types of gravy (mushroom or onion) and curry sauce (fruity or chinese) I miss Northern chippies.

possumgoddess · 10/04/2018 19:16

And batter bits are called gribbles down here - no idea why (and I don't like them anyway - but each to her own).

honeysucklejasmine · 10/04/2018 19:16

I've heard of it but couldn't have told you what it was. Home counties.

Plainlycrackers · 10/04/2018 19:20

Potato scallops... my dirty secret... in Cheshire... never heard of smacks though...

HeedMove · 10/04/2018 19:20

Yip fritters here. Most chippy still do them. South West Scotland.

Octopus37 · 10/04/2018 19:20

Yes, I'm from Cheshire. They are a typical example of success on a money diet (only used to cost 10p), versus lack of success on a food diet.

concretesieve · 10/04/2018 19:29

Yes - my old dad was fond of scallops. I don't think I've ever seen them in a chippy Envy Dad was a Lancashire lad.

mouse26 · 10/04/2018 19:30

East Midlands here and that's a potato fritter at our chippy. Mum used to slice and deep fry potatoes and call them scallops

Babybearsporij · 10/04/2018 19:32

Yep, would often get a scallop from the chippy. I'm a Brummie.

squealingpiglets · 10/04/2018 19:38

yes i'm from Lincolnshire & they are still sold here! Scallop in a bun was a firm favourite amongst my school friends 20+ years ago!

RossGellersWhiteTeeth · 10/04/2018 19:48

Yep! Chippy across the road from my school in West Yorkshire did them, they were 20p. An utter bargain!
