To ask if you've heard of a potato scallop

When I was a teenager I'd quite often buy a potato scallop for 20p from the chippy on the walk home from swimming. It was a slice of battered potato and was delicious. Where I live now no one has heard of them. Have you and if yes where do you live? :)

Mmmmm love scallops, 20p from my local chippy, I'm from Birmingham.

MardAsSnails · 21/01/2019 07:35

Another who looked very confused when I saw an actual scallop for the first time when I was in my 20s.

Birdsgottafly · 21/01/2019 07:37

They used to be a norm, in the chippies in Liverpool, but they're dying out Sad.

toddlepod · 21/01/2019 07:40

Oh Yes! Bloody lovely. Used to pop into the chippie after an evening swimming session and get either a bag of chips of couple of scallops. Simple but wow.

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/01/2019 07:42

What a weird thread to resurrect

Indeed, and with the irritating 'oop north' terminology to boot. Why do people say that? It's not funny and it's not clever.

KirstyAllsopsfattertwin does not deserve to experience the deliciousness that is any kind of scallop.

Chwaraeteg · 21/01/2019 07:43

We always called that a fritter when I was little. I haven't had one in ages, yum!

We used to fry sliced potatoes in oil and call them scollops though.

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/01/2019 07:44

But what people should take from this thread is that Yorkshire fish and chips are by far the best in the country, with our scallops and proper fishcakes, none of that mashed potato and breadcrumb nonsense here.

Yorkshire residents who make the mistake of ordering fish and chips elsewhere will know exactly what I am talking about.

OVienna · 21/01/2019 07:50

Yes

lastqueenofscotland · 21/01/2019 07:51

Manchester and virtually every chippy sells them

Greyhound22 · 21/01/2019 07:51

Yes Black Country here. All the chippys sell them.

50p - amazing on a cob with vinegar.

longwayoff · 21/01/2019 07:54

I know what they are but have never seen them south of Watford.

anniehm · 21/01/2019 08:08

Still sell them as potato fritters - 50p e mids

tryinganewname · 21/01/2019 08:12

This is true @BarbaraofSevillle I'll never forget when I ordered a fish cake in Skegness and it was a load of mush in breadcrumbs Angry what even is that?!

And when I asked for a chip butty in Manchester and they had no idea what I was on about! Had to explain I wanted some chips in a 'cob'.. we got there eventually Grin

Pinkprincess1978 · 21/01/2019 08:27

When I was at school I would have 4, a bread roll with a pat of butter and a 1/4 pint of milk for my lunch. I don't think I've had once since I left.

Jamiefraserskilt · 21/01/2019 08:32

Yup, loved them. Scallop and a bag of bits.

MaryShelley1818 · 21/01/2019 10:38

I’m in the North East and never heard of them from the chippy! (I’ve had the supermarket versions...love M&S ones).
I love a chippy tea! Always with a bag of batter on the side to make a crispy butty, and either a fish or a large battered sausage with curry on.

StickItUpYaJumpa · 21/01/2019 10:41

I love scallops! Sadly no one here does other. Sob.

CloudPop · 21/01/2019 12:24

I want one right now

KirstyAllsoppsFatterTwin · 21/01/2019 13:24

In my defence I do say 'dahn sahf' as well. Grin

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 21/01/2019 13:26

Yes, another Manc. They don’t sell them around these parts though, SW.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 21/01/2019 13:28

In Manchester, it would’ve been a ‘chip barm’, tryinganewname. Cobs are crusty. Crap for chips. Barms (barm cakes) are soft bread rolls, perfect for chips. Or a nice oven bottom muffin, you can get loads of chips in those.

dublindingledarling · 21/01/2019 13:35

They're dabs in East Lancs. yum!

Thehop · 21/01/2019 13:36

Yup! We have them!! We’re in West Yorkshire, and they cost a lot more now! My middle son likes a scallop butty 😂

IsItThatTimeAgain · 21/01/2019 13:37

Yeah, west Midlands

penelopepig · 21/01/2019 13:38

Yes! Love them. North Yorkshire here
