To ask if you've heard of a potato scallop

When I was a teenager I'd quite often buy a potato scallop for 20p from the chippy on the walk home from swimming. It was a slice of battered potato and was delicious. Where I live now no one has heard of them. Have you and if yes where do you live? :)

Yes, I used to buy one to eat on the way home if I got sent to the chippy Grin

possumgoddess · 10/04/2018 13:23

Sainsburys sell them in their chilled food I think. I have never seen them in the chippy down here (deepest darkest Devon)

imip · 10/04/2018 13:23

In Victoria it’s potato cakes. I live in London (15 or so years) and have never seen them in the UK. I’m at home for Easter holidays and I’ve made sure I’ve had a few. I’ve also made sure to have some dim sims - I love dim sims!

Bluelonerose · 10/04/2018 13:25

Op I'm 30 minutes from Brum and all chippys round here sell them Wink

Weedsnseeds1 · 10/04/2018 13:25

We have them here (Somerset) and my South Yorkshire Dad also know about them.

Ansumpasty · 10/04/2018 13:25

Yes, they were 10p in my local chippy growing up. I’d get one on cold evenings when I was 13 and hanging around in the streets. This was in the North West

LARLARLAND · 10/04/2018 13:26

Yes. I am North West. My DDad made scotch scallops which are sliced potatoes and bacon baked in the oven.

Coastalcommand · 10/04/2018 13:27

I miss them :(

TheJoyOfSox · 10/04/2018 13:27

I used to have scallops in Lincolnshire, I think they are called a Potato Fritter here in the Black Country.

Becauseimworthit79 · 10/04/2018 13:28

Yes, I have, OP. Only after meeting FIL as when he goes for fish and chips for the family, he orders scallops, which he pronounces as scollops.
It’s like having chips with chips.

JassyRadlett · 10/04/2018 13:28

I’m another Queenslander who misses them. Going to have to go into some chippies next time I’m in the North or Midlands to see if I can find any...

Blaablaablaa · 10/04/2018 13:29

Yes! They're amazing! So are pea fritters but they're hard to come by

Rikalaily · 10/04/2018 13:29

My kids buy them from the chippy close to where they have cadets, they are 25p Smile

sluj · 10/04/2018 13:29

Delicious. Also known as klondykes in the Black Country a few years ago

Destinysdaughter · 10/04/2018 13:30

BoreOfWhabylon me too!

Used to eat them growing up in West Midlands, don’t know if they still sell them. They were bloody lovely 😀

UpstartCrow · 10/04/2018 13:30

I used to have one with my chips, back in the days when I had hollow legs.

boxyfingo · 10/04/2018 13:30

Yes they are bloody gorgeous. Does anyone still get scraps from the chippy?

ColinsVeryJolly · 10/04/2018 13:32

I love a scallop!

DH calls them Klondikes which is weird cos we're both born and bred in the same town and no chippy I've ever known calls them anything other than scallops.

beecrazy · 10/04/2018 13:33

My mum used to cook these back in the 1950's in Liverpool. Always called scallops, I loved them. Deep fried battered potato slices cut in rounds about 1cm thick.

IreneWinters · 10/04/2018 13:34

Never heard of them. I'm in Oxfordshire. Grew up on the south coast and never saw them there either. I feel like I'm missing out.

GorgeousJaws · 10/04/2018 13:34

Do you mean "fish-bits" boxyfingo?

Used to love them with chips, haven't asked for them for ages at the chippy.

endofthelinefinally · 10/04/2018 13:34

Yorkshire.
Delicious with scraps and mushy peas. (Heart attack on a plate).

WheresTheHooferDoofer · 10/04/2018 13:35

I don't think any of my local chippies here (East Mids) do potato scallops anymore. My mum used to make her own Grin.

Round here, scraps just tends to be called batter bits, and I ask for some if I remember.

SnookieSnooks · 10/04/2018 13:36

No idea what you’re talking about! Hmm (London area)

glamourousgranny42 · 10/04/2018 13:37

OMG 2 scallops in a breadcake was my favourite back in the day. I'm from Leeds and now live in the North east. No sign of a scallop butty up here unfortunately. I do miss them. Much nicer than a chip butty. Mmmmmmm
