To ask if you've heard of a potato scallop

When I was a teenager I'd quite often buy a potato scallop for 20p from the chippy on the walk home from swimming. It was a slice of battered potato and was delicious. Where I live now no one has heard of them. Have you and if yes where do you live? :)

Yes, we have them here, North Wales. DS has one with his chippy tea as he's not keen on chips weirdo Oh, and yes to scraps too, the little bits of batter, fished out of the fryer with loads of salt and vinegar, remember getting those as a kid, think they were free and came in newspaper too :)

SpeckleDust · 10/04/2018 13:49

Oh god, yes! We used to buy them on the way from school to get the bus from the town centre (Walsall) as they were only 10p or 20p. Such hot and deep-fried loveliness, covered in salt and vinegar.

I've never noticed them where I live now (North-West) but I'm back home for a visit soon so I will try hunting them down again.

Spam fritter, chips and curry sauce. With scraps. That was the celebration tea of the gods in North Lincolnshire! Exam results, driving tests, engagements! Can't get a spam fritter for love nor money round my ends now!

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 10/04/2018 13:50

"For example, a fishcake in Sheffield is different to one in Doncaster." Sheffield fish cakes are glorious! But dh says that now rather than a slice of fish sandwiched between two slices of spud, it's more like modged up fish.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 10/04/2018 13:50

Yes, because I was a stud en t in Liverpool. Never heard of the down south.

rumbelina · 10/04/2018 13:50

I didn't even know scallops were seafood until I was 25!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/04/2018 13:50

We call your scallops fritters here.

They are yummy!

GrandTheftWalrus · 10/04/2018 13:51

Fritters here. Lovely on a buttered roll with tomato sauce.

May have to go to chippy later!

pinkie1982 · 10/04/2018 13:52

My mum used to make scallops instead of chips.
The chipshop by me also sells them

Skiiltan · 10/04/2018 13:52

Yes, they sell them at most chippies around my way (far west midlands) and where I grew up (south Birmingham). I always feel particularly greedy if I order one along with my chips plus whatever: a fried-potato accompaniment to fried potatoes seems a bit excessive, especially as I usually can't finish the chips. I'd like to be able to get half a portion of chips with the rest made up by a scollop.

@DorothyBastard - I've seen pea fritters recently but I can't think where.

KatharinaRosalie · 10/04/2018 13:53

Didn't realise a Scallop was a Fish

It's a clam.

UrsulaPandress · 10/04/2018 13:53

Yup - Greater Manchester.

And scraps.

Yum

FlibbertyGiblets · 10/04/2018 13:55

Nope. Nor onion vinegar (kind of want to try this) but yes to fried batter bits called scrumps. 'A portion of chips and scrumps please'.

Pinkvoid · 10/04/2018 13:55

Yes, I’m from Yorkshire and love them!

GaryWilmotsTeeth · 10/04/2018 13:56

whenever I was poorly and off school as a kid, I went to my gran's house to be looked after when mum was at work. she would always make me potato scallops and a cuppa soup. ultimate comfort food.

flowerslemonade · 10/04/2018 13:56

does anyone have orange chips :P

Justanotherlurker · 10/04/2018 13:56

Yup, love them

And Chip Spice too

flowerslemonade · 10/04/2018 13:57

Yeah I had a shock when I ordered some pasta with prawns in it and it came with scallops. wtf are these white mushroom things in my meal I thought...

Heismyopendoor · 10/04/2018 13:57

I want a roll and fritter now lol :)

Can’t beat a pizza crunch though!

Avonandice · 10/04/2018 13:58

Our chipper sells them but calls them scollops.

ILookedintheWater · 10/04/2018 13:58

Enjoyed them in my youth. Not seen one for years. Northerner moved South :(

GrandTheftWalrus · 10/04/2018 14:01

@heis love a pizza crunch.

This thread is making me hungry!

flowerslemonade · 10/04/2018 14:01

ohhhhh I've never seen a pizza crunch. Would love to try a deep fried mars bar.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 10/04/2018 14:01

We get them here in Manchester. I get a cone of chips, rather than a full portion, so I can have a potato scallop. Battered sausage, cone of chips, vinegar soaked potato scallop and spicy curry sauce.
They are my favourite part of moving to England.

I did smile at Sally on Coronation Street last year when she was hobnobbing with the Cheshire set at a “posh” meal. One of the women said “don’t you just love scallops, Sally?” to which Sally, the constant social climber replied “yes! I love potatoes”.

user1483390742 · 10/04/2018 14:02

We used to buy them walking home from school too! I remember when i first heard about shellfish scallops as an adult! I was very confused!
(Still prefer the potato ones though! I have no class though!)
