To ask if you've heard of a potato scallop

When I was a teenager I'd quite often buy a potato scallop for 20p from the chippy on the walk home from swimming. It was a slice of battered potato and was delicious. Where I live now no one has heard of them. Have you and if yes where do you live? :)

When my friend moved up north from a fishing town on the south coast, she was intrigued at how all the fish shops had scallops for 20-30 pence each when she wasn't used to seeing them sold individually in takeaways and if they were, they were far more expensive.

Of course, she wasn't aware that scallops could be anything other than the seafood kind.

DH - Australia - scallop
Me - NE England - fritter

DH used to get 20cents worth of scallops for his Friday school lunch back in the seventies. He was horrified last time we were back in Sydney and they were $1 each!

picklemepopcorn · 10/04/2018 14:54

In Cheshire they were called smacks.

MissWilmottsGhost · 10/04/2018 14:56

I used to work in a chip shop in Somerset 25 years ago and made and sold potato scallops there.

I had never heard of them before working there but my family are northerners so I assumed at the time it was a southern thing.

Apparently not Smile

I'm another who didn't know of the shellfish scallop until adulthood.Blush Both my dad and gran used to make them when I was a child. My dad still does and now adds pepper spice (like you get on peppered steak) to the batter. They're gorgeous. Our chippy does them too but in full or held portions, you can't buy only 1.

lovemylover · 10/04/2018 15:27

Gorgeous,i am making some for my tea tonight, we just call them battered scallops,
A very cheap and easy meal if all yu gave in is some potatoes

KizzyBear · 10/04/2018 15:31

Mhmm scollap batch 😋 (west mids)
Nan was from motherwell in scotland and it was a fritter to her.
Grandad was from galway in ireland, he didn't have a fucking clue what we were on about 😁

Thegreatestshowwomen · 10/04/2018 15:35

We call them Dabs- Lancashire

flowerslemonade · 10/04/2018 15:38

scollup

MyfanwyMontez · 10/04/2018 15:42

Aah, I remember scallops. The chippie did the usual potato scallops and a “posted up” version - a layer is sage and onion stuffing sandwiched between two slices of potato and battered and deep fried. Heaven!

Pinkprincess1978 · 10/04/2018 15:46

Ooh yes! I used to get them at school, they were 2p each, I used to get 4, a 5p bread bun, a pat of butter and a 1/4 pint of milk 😀

PeapodBurgundy · 10/04/2018 15:47

Myfanwy see now that's eiher a pattie or a savoury here. The chip shops offer a range of middles including cheese (cheesy mash), corned beef (corned beef and mash), Spam (just a slice of Spam,no mash for some reason) or fish (fish and mash).

Shizzlestix · 10/04/2018 15:48

Local Indian does them on their buffet days.

BlondeB83 · 10/04/2018 15:51

Still have scallops in Yorkshire.

Almostfifty · 10/04/2018 15:52

My Dad used to make them. Not had one since.

TenancyTroublesAgain · 10/04/2018 15:52

Yes

MinniesAndMickeysNeedCounting · 10/04/2018 15:54

My mum used to make these when I was a child. They were lovely. We were from Lincolnshire/Cambridgeshire area

AliasGrape · 10/04/2018 15:58

Yes, I loved them, none of the local chippies seem to do them these days. (Manchester area)

llangennith · 10/04/2018 16:00

Is it just a disc-shaped battered chip?
Curious🤔

PickleFish · 10/04/2018 16:01

I think it's different where I'm from - scalloped potatoes - a sort of potato dish with milk and baked in the oven, not sure what else was with it. Typical to serve with gammon etc. I didn't like them as a child!

TotHappy · 10/04/2018 16:08

PickleFish yesssss I was just about to say... Mum used to make scalloped potatoes all the time. Layered up eith milk and onion and baked, bit like dauphinoise but not as rich.
Never heard of the choppy scallop here in the far, far south west

TomRavenscroft · 10/04/2018 16:10

Heard of them and used to have them when we had fish and chips as a treat in my childhood (East Midlands).

In the Smoke now and haven't had one for years. Then again I can't say I've ever looked or asked for one in the chippy.

Used to live in Scotland but oddly don't remember them, under any name.

pigmcpigface · 10/04/2018 16:10

YES! As a veggie in the north during the late 90s/00s these were the only things I could get when mates had fish and chips! Yes, I literally had potato with a side of potato.

A local fish and chip shop now has a full vegetarian AND a full vegan range - including prawns, pea fritters, sausages and fish fingers. Times have changed....

Justgivemesomepeace · 10/04/2018 16:11

Potato scallop round here is 40p

PistFump · 10/04/2018 16:15

Yes I'm the midlands. I have it as a veggie alternative to fish and chips - yum! 😋
