Price of coke in Asda

noenergy · 07/04/2018 15:10

Last week I bought 18 tins for £4.15.

Today I popped in and has to check prices again as they were £8 for 10 tins or £10 for 24 tins. I couldn't believe it. Sugar tax or whatever it was certainly stopped me from buying it.

I'm thinking the labels were wrong? I did read them to check quantity and price.

where does the sugar tax money go

Queenofthedrivensnow · 08/04/2018 20:23

I believe coke has a lot more sugar in it than Dr Pepper or similar.
Tesco express by work has reduced the size of the meal deal coke but not the other pop

ollybee · 08/04/2018 20:48

Red Coke and Blue Pepsi are the only two mainstream drinks that pay the highest rate of sugar tax.

YourWinter · 08/04/2018 21:05

I don't like the taste of diet drinks and normally have a bottle each of own-brand lemonade, and full fat Coke here as mixers. Family all grown up and these drinks only come out when friends are here.

I was surprised when a friend who always has coffee on daytime visits, or wine in the evening, spied the Coke and asked for a large glass of it as she was "too thirsty for coffee".

I used to take a bottle of Coke along when I was driving long distances but it wouldn't cross my mind to drink it on its own at home, on cost as much as anything. I have never bought a 'designer coffee' either.

There will always be people who put multiple spoons of sugar in their hot drinks, until sugar on its own is unaffordable. Maybe they'll target cakes and biscuits next and the 30p pack of custard creams will be a thing of the past!

rebbykay · 08/04/2018 21:31

My main beef with this is that the encouraged alternatives are often full of aspartame. There are very few low-sugar or sugar-free treat drinks that don't have it or some other shitty sweetener.

Until I know what aspartame can do I don't want it. It's a bit shit to make me pay more for something just because we know its effects whilst charging less for something that could be just as dangerous.

dementedmummy · 08/04/2018 21:35

What really annoys me is the fact that companies are changing their drinks to avoid the tax with the end result of a bloody awful drink. Irn Bru, San Pellagrino to name a few. So not only do I need to pay more to get a fizzy drink I cant even get a decent one! Will it stop the people who binge drink? Will it chookie. Educate the masses not slap a tax on it. Where will it end? We have a cigarette tax, petrol tax, alcohol minimum pricing, sugar tax...what next? A sausage tax? Cream bun tax? Less nanny stating and more action on saving the country from the disaster that is brexit x

SleepFreeZone · 08/04/2018 21:39

We already have a sausage roll tax don’t we? You have to pay more to sit in Greggs and eat your pastry.

Chicken1970 · 08/04/2018 21:43

My husband will be doomed if they tax plain sugar or have a choc tax. He had 3 spoons in his coffee, 2 in his tea and 2 dessert spoons on his cereal. In a day he can have easily have 50 tsps of sugar. He can go thro 95% of a bag of sugar in a week on his own. Also he has to eat choc every day or he gets the shakes. Yet as hes slim the Dr never complains about his sugar habit. Husband never touches soft drinks, so this soft drink tax, won't stop him eating that much sugar. If there's other people out like my husband it won't make them healthier, this soft drink tax,as they consume their sugar in other forms.

MaggieS41 · 08/04/2018 21:47

Boo hoo to all of you complaining 😭

Chicken1970 · 08/04/2018 21:53

Maggies41 im not complaining. Handful of times a year i buy pop. Xmas is the main one and the other is the odd time we eat out,so this sugar tax will not affect us.

willdoitinaminute · 08/04/2018 22:02

No amount of bouncing around a gym or eating the latest faddy health food will compensate the damage a high sugar drink will do to your arteries or teeth long term. Tap water is by far the safest drink available to us. As an HCP I could go on at great length but I think that due to the incredible gullibility of joe public we are fast losing the battle to the fat cat marketing companies.
I have a visible dent in my forehead from banging it against my Surgery wall trying to explain to mummies why their DCs have rotting teeth. And yes children are getting fat and yes it is due to sugar!

Catspaws · 08/04/2018 22:06

£8 for ten tins must surely be wrong?

BarbaraofSevillle · 08/04/2018 22:12

This is the root of the problem. The obvious answer to reducing health problems caused by sugary drinks is to cut down massively. People shouldn't be drinking them daily or even several time a week. They're a 'once or twice a month' thing.

But they're manufactured by some of the biggest, most profitable companies in the world, who invest millions, possibly billions, in making sure people keep consuming at ever increasing levels, getting people hooked, thinking that they 'couldn't possibly drink tap water' so in reality, the pressure to keep people consuming is far far greater than the messages telling people to cut down, and instead of switching to water, people are switching to diet versions of the same drinks, which Coca Cola etc are fine with, as people are continuing to buy their products.

I grew up drinking squash with sugar in it, so did my DH and so have my DCs. We are ALL slim with good teeth (no fillings or extractions). My own GP has told me that artificial sweeteners give me the screaming shits! Yes water is fine...I drink a lot of it but it doesn’t always “hit the spot”.

woodlanddreamer · 08/04/2018 22:16

Mmmmm. Love an ice cold diet coke in the afternoon

MaggieS41 · 08/04/2018 22:32

chicken1970 I’m the same. I love coke! But I know how bad it is for anyone (including the ‘fit’ and ‘thin’ ones) and will also buy it on occasions like you. I don’t mind paying more as I’d prefer not to drink it anyway.

Fbnick · 08/04/2018 22:42

We need to make the 'right' food to eat and drink - fruit, veg, fresh meat etc cheaper than the 'bad' foods - coke, doughnuts, chips, pizza etc. People will have little choice but make a healthy decision when it comes to food and drink because the 'bad' food is too expensive.
Its too easy to grab a coke and a chocolate bar when you need a quick snack.
This should save most families and the NHS a fortune. Sadly it won't fix it.
Just my opinion, and what I try to do.

BarbaraofSevillle · 08/04/2018 22:48

But sugary drinks are already more expensive than tap water or even bottled water sometimes. How expensive would they have to be for people not to buy them? Ramping the price up didn't work a long time for smoking, but it might have done now, smoking rates have really fallen.

And it's not just cost that's causing people to choose chocolate and donuts over fresh veg and meat - the latter needs preparation, so time, equipment and opportunity, whereas ready made food, whether chocolate bars or pasties etc and drinks are ready to eat now, with no time, equipment or effort needed.

Sallystyle · 08/04/2018 22:52

Until I know what aspartame can do I don't want it.

We do know what it does. It's the most tested product out there. Snopes has some good information on it.

Some people might be sensitive to it and can't tolerate it, but it isn't just as dangerous and that has been proven time and time again.

hks · 08/04/2018 22:52

£2-99 for a 2ltr botle of Pepsi in our local Spar today ...only £1-99 in Tesco price increase is shocking

What are the government going to add sugar tax to next Biscuits, sweets, chocolate, cereals, kids yoghurts etc

HelenaDove · 08/04/2018 23:36

"Yet as hes slim the Dr never complains about his sugar habit"

I wish i could say im shocked at hearing a doctor only being concerned about the aesthetic but im not!

sweetkitty · 08/04/2018 23:48

I paid £1.50 for a 500ml bottle of regular coke today. Drank half of it with aspirin for a migraine. It tasted horrible but it did hit the spot.

HopeClearwater · 08/04/2018 23:56

Also he has to eat choc every day or he gets the shakes

That’s because he’s living on frequent, regular doses of sugar! Been there, done that!

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 09/04/2018 00:20

Also he has to eat choc every day or he gets the shakes

That's because he's eating loads of sugar every day Confused

Yet as hes slim the Dr never complains about his sugar habit

The GP isn't doing their job properly then. If your DH is eating possibly in excess of 50 tsps of sugar every day, then his GP should be advising him to cut back. 'Being slim' is not an indicator of health.

Roussette · 09/04/2018 01:49

Good grief, 50 tsp a day???? That is really quite worrying, I can't remember the last time I bought a bag of sugar, it's easily over a year ago, maybe two. I keep it in for workmen, that's the only time we use it.

The only sugar I keep in is caster and that's in case I fancy making a cake which is rare.
