Price of coke in Asda

noenergy · 07/04/2018 15:10

Last week I bought 18 tins for £4.15.

Today I popped in and has to check prices again as they were £8 for 10 tins or £10 for 24 tins. I couldn't believe it. Sugar tax or whatever it was certainly stopped me from buying it.

I'm thinking the labels were wrong? I did read them to check quantity and price.

Rosewhite I buy beer in bulk, as that's how one tends to buy it in Belgium. It sits in the cellar for when we have friends over. It doesn't tempt me.

I bulk buy sparkling water when the San Pell is on offer.

YouTheCat - Some full sugar drinks don't seem to be affected.

Coke is the only one left that has no artificial sweeteners. My beloved Irn bru was the second last and that just made the switch to sweeteners last month.

Pick up any fizzy drink now and they will all contain one or more of - saccharin, acesulfame k, aspartame, Xylitol, Sorbitol.

Coke is the last one standing that uses sugar on its own. You can however find some full sugar versions on Dr Pepper, Fanta etc in poundshops and the like. It’s the places that buy in short dated stock made for other countries (usually in the EU). I fear that will also be coming to an end soon due to the sugar tax.

I quit all artificial sweeteners 2 years ago (not easy as they are in loads of things you wouldn’t even think of) and honestly have never felt better. Lots of little niggly health issues have cleared up. I no longer feel cold all the time. My feet no longer get pins and needles when I sit down for any length of time. I have lost weight. I get less headaches. Just to name a few things. I don’t think it’s a coincidence and I still drink fizzy drinks or buy pre packed sauces, ketchup etc like before. It’s just that now I go for the full sugar versions rather that the artificially sweetened ones.

Anecdotally, tends to be fat people that drink diet coke.

That doesn't mean it was diet coke that made them fat in the first place. It's just as likely that they became fat due to other reasons, realised they needed to diet and then started drinking diet coke as part of an attempt to lose weight. Classic chicken/egg scenario.

lalalalyra · 08/04/2018 14:28

It's so wierd. Nearly everyone I work with drinks tea or coffee all day. I drink water and sometimes a can of pepsi max. As soon as that can gets seen someone makes a comment.
It's like people think they're superior for not drinking pop. So wierd.

Exactly that! BIL's GF drinks around 12 cups of tea a day. Lot of milk and 2 sugars in every one. Yet she raised an eyebrow about the sugar content of my ONE can of ginger over a lunch (that's not even every day). She never touches the stuff apparently - bully for you!

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 08/04/2018 14:46

Is the money from the sugar tax going to be given to the NHS? I don’t mind if this is the case but I have a feeling that it’s not.

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 08/04/2018 14:49

£2.08 for a 2l bottle of 7Up.

£1.65 for 2l of 7Up Free.

70p for Sainsbury's own brand lemon and lime soft drink.

If you don't drink alcohol, then a fizzy drink makes sense. I'd bet that most who drink pop regularly aren't tee total though. I pretty much am. One or two glasses a year, at most, and only if I'm out. I couldn't imagine sitting at home with an alcoholic drink.

However, I don't judge the people that do choose to have a glass of wine with their dinner or a gin & tonic because I understand that different people have different tastes. I also don't complain about how I shouldn't have to pay for any alcohol related illnesses/accidents or how my taxes shouldn't be paying for policing town centres at the weekend because other people choose to drink alcohol and I don't.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 08/04/2018 15:59

I wouldn’t mind paying the sugar tax! My problem is that the manufacturers have changed the recipes and swapped sugar for sweeteners instead of just letting the consumer choose to pay more or switch to the, already existing, low sugar version. Coca Cola have said they won’t be changing apparently....but I hardly ever have coke. For me it’s the squashes that are the problem...I used to love Ribena. We also used to have lucozade in the cupboard at work for if any of our diabetic children needed a quick glucose fix...now we have to have to ask them to get extra prescriptions of glucogel which actually costs the NHS.

HelenaDove · 08/04/2018 16:57

When i was at Slimming World they were pushing artificial sweetners (its free on the plan) Hmm

And........................Diet Coke chicken. Loads of the other members tried it i thought the idea was foul.

I gave up diet coke back in April 2013

HelenaDove · 08/04/2018 16:58

YY Sn0tnose That attitude is hardly ever reciprocated when it comes to overweight people though.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 08/04/2018 17:05

Umbongo DS1 doesn't like the taste of alcohol, he'll occasionally have a can of JD and Coke. He needs Coke or similar soft drinks for the sugar. He likes Coke.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 08/04/2018 17:06

I also love a half-frozen Coke in the summer. Drinking water all day gets old.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 08/04/2018 17:08

I have Diet Coke with rum. And vodka. And jd. and Bacardi. Grin

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 08/04/2018 17:10

Low blood sugar Umbongo? Grin

DagenhamRoundhouse · 08/04/2018 17:21

Don't buy the filthy stuff!

flowerslemonade · 08/04/2018 17:21

Has anyone tried making it themselves?

Apparently you need essential oils :/

I sometimes think there's a research chemical opiate in diet coke. Sprayed on in small amounts.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 08/04/2018 17:22

Low inhibitions perf

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 08/04/2018 17:23

HelenaDove Surely the diet coke chicken was fowl?

ton181 · 08/04/2018 17:24

All of you saying that you don't drink full sugar soft drinks do you drink fruit juice, squash or diet versions? Or is it water only?
Yogi teas. Hot or cold, sometimes I make a big jug and keep it in the fridge.

And what about the likes of jam, donuts chocolate, sweets etc. Can't remember the last time I had a dessert or a bar of chocolate. Think the sugar tax needs to be rolled out to these items.
I agree, the sugar tax should also be on these items.
I don't eat or drink sugar/processed foods or drink so wouldn't affect me personally, but less sugar/crap has got to be a good thing.
