Price of coke in Asda

noenergy · 07/04/2018 15:10

Last week I bought 18 tins for £4.15.

Today I popped in and has to check prices again as they were £8 for 10 tins or £10 for 24 tins. I couldn't believe it. Sugar tax or whatever it was certainly stopped me from buying it.

I'm thinking the labels were wrong? I did read them to check quantity and price.

You can only eat that recipe if you're feeling peckish!

pteradactyl · 08/04/2018 17:44

flowerslemonade I suspect that isn't true as I can't imagine it being legal but I am a major diet coke addict. I gave up smoking a few years ago with barely any trouble but can't kick the (diet) coke habit. I often joke it has drugs in it that I'm addicted to. I don't buy that it's just the caffeine because ai can replace the caffeine with other sources but it doesnt help me quit it.
I also find a lot of people seem to think they're superior for not drinking coke. It's quite odd. I always get comments about it. I personally find it very weird that people would guzzle coffee all day but whatever, I wouldn't mention it. Whatever beverage floats your boat!

flowerslemonade · 08/04/2018 17:48

If it was absolutely miniscule quantities as part of the processing or even part of something the liquid flows over it may not have to be named in a recipe tho - much like the stuff salad is sprayed with or the things in protective atmospheres (gasses surrounding meats etc)... IDK, I just feel there is something else in it that might be down as flavourings. No way of ever knowing though.

SarfE4sticated · 08/04/2018 18:00

I love Coke with ice and lemon on a summer holiday somewhere European, but never drink it the rest of the time. My reason for not drinking it is I don't know what's in it! I'll happily drink fruit juice don't care about the natural sugar content to be honest, but I normally don't eat or drink anything with ingredients that I don't understand.

Babyroobs · 08/04/2018 18:05

Sugar tax- my teenage son has been grumbling about it all week - and the fact that Lucozade has changed !

ProperLavs · 08/04/2018 18:09

Surely it's a good thing. You might not like it but reducing sugar intake can never be a bad thing.

grasspigeons · 08/04/2018 18:12

I drink sugary drinks, I quite like a glass of coke in the pub for instance. Water gets dull all the time and coke tastes less sweet than pure fruit juice. I drink tea and coffee but don't want a hot drink all the time either

I'm happy paying tax for the indulgence - not happy to have the choice taken away so only having the option of artificial sweeteners.

Aeroflotgirl · 08/04/2018 18:22

With the sugar tax, than manufacturers put artificial sweetners into them, which is also very bad, if not worse.

peacheachpearplum · 08/04/2018 18:25

The supermarkets always seem to be having offers for Coke and Pepsi and with different sized bottles and different sized packs of cans it is hard to keep track of.

soulrider · 08/04/2018 18:27

theyve alr4eady changed the recipe to tesco lemonade i can taste sweetener

Tesco lemonade has contained sweeteners for years

MrsAlexKarev · 08/04/2018 18:27

@Helena diet coke chicken is amazing! It doesn't sound great, granted - but it is so yummy!
@Sn0tnose I'm with you, I'll have an alcholic drink maybe once or twice a year, I don't smoke so really fizzy is my only vice. DP & I go through about 24 cans of Coke Zero a week.

pestilentialboundary · 08/04/2018 18:29

The good news about the sugar tax is Schweppes have finally brought out a low sugar, sweetener free tonic www.ocado.com/webshop/product/Schweppes-1783-Light-Tonic-Water/389871011 Gin

ProperLavs · 08/04/2018 18:29

12 cans each a week? Bloody hell Shock

expatinscotland · 08/04/2018 18:32

'diet coke chicken is amazing! It doesn't sound great, granted - but it is so yummy! '

Nothing with aspartame in it is amazing. That stuff is vile.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 08/04/2018 18:34

Schweppes has been out of bounds for me for a long time now because of sweeteners even in the non diet version!

Thank god for Fevertree (no artificial quinine either).

mrscampbellblackreturns · 08/04/2018 18:38

I hadn't realised this had happened but had read it was going too. I buy the multi-packs of mini cans of coke as they are the perfect size for treating hypo's for my type one diabetic child.

Will all fast acting glucose now be subject to the sugar tax I wonder?

AL75 · 08/04/2018 18:38

So glad this sugar tax has started, about Time! I think that all food manufacturers need to slowly ween the public off the sugary processed foods. This needs to be done slowly so the public get used to it as sugar is like a drug and very addictive. So many foods contain an unnecessary amount of sugar, they don't care if they are poisoning you or your kids, they just want to make money. It is clear that the public are not responsible enough to make decisions to stop buying this crap so the government needs to take control

Ravenesque · 08/04/2018 18:53

I happily drank less sugar when coke introduced it's new Coke Life which was part sugar and part Stevia and tasted bloody great, but then they stopped making it and I was a bit pissed off because I liked it a lot. I hate diet coke because of the aspartame which is just vile to me. Whenever I drink anything that contains it I find that the drink makes me more thirsty and I'm not convinced that it's a "good" alternative to sugar.

That said, Coke Zero, which has aspartame but a couple of other chemicals that are not in Diet Coke does taste better than diet coke, which does not compute in my head.

Anyway, I guess the sugar tax was inevitable but given the way it's being used, thus far, I'm not sure it's completely fair.

I guess that I'll have to reduce my sugary drink intake!

Ooh, just read that they're going to produce a new coke life which is all stevia. That's good news for this coke addict.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 08/04/2018 18:54

So is this going to extend to all the Starbucks type coffee products that are full of cream, sugar, syrups then?

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 08/04/2018 18:56

There isn’t much caffeine in coke, perterdactyl. Less in a can of coke than a cup of tea.

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 08/04/2018 18:58

*Today 17:34 GabsAlot

what happens when they announce aspartame is deadly for you startt taxing that?

they shouldnt penilise people for what they want to drink/eat*

Aspartame is one of the most researched food stuffs in existence. I don’t think anyone is suddenly going to discover it’s dangerous.

gluteustothemaximus · 08/04/2018 18:58

I don't have an issue with the sugar tax.

I do have an issue with companies avoiding the sugar tax by replacing it with artificial chemical sweeteners.

Hmm

Also, where will it stop? Apple juice and 'innocent' smoothies have as much sugar as the fizzy drinks.

Who ever thought 9 teaspoons of sugar in a can was ever a good idea Confused

It'll probably go across the board. Watch out. All foods and drink with be pumped with chemical sweeteners and there won't be sugar anywhere soon.

Luckily I can bake at home with sugar. Surely they can't tax me on my home baked goods sugar content!!

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 08/04/2018 19:04

Hummus do they still do Innocent Bubbles though?

ilovekitkats · 08/04/2018 19:04

Pizza Hut have removed Pepsi from their unlimited drinks. When I asked why they said it was due to the sugar. I paid £3.25 for a bottle of Pepsi while my friend paid £2.85 for unlimited refills of Pepsi Max. They can’t be seen to be selling unlimited refills of unhealthy drinks.

I’m an adult, I hate diet drinks, I eat out very rarely and when I do, I want proper full fat coke!
