Price of coke in Asda

noenergy · 07/04/2018 15:10

Last week I bought 18 tins for £4.15.

Today I popped in and has to check prices again as they were £8 for 10 tins or £10 for 24 tins. I couldn't believe it. Sugar tax or whatever it was certainly stopped me from buying it.

I'm thinking the labels were wrong? I did read them to check quantity and price.

Wow that's a lot of sugar (and other random chemicals). A small amount of freshly squeezed orange juice with majority sparkling water is nice if you fancy something fizzy and because it's so diluted the acid and fruit sugar shouldn't be a problem especially in moderation. I usually drink cold water still or sparkling with lots of ice and fresh lime, I don't find cola thirst quenching.

orangesmartieseggs · 09/04/2018 08:28

Also he has to eat choc every day or he gets the shakes.

No - he gets the shakes because he eats stupid amounts of sugar and goes into withdrawal!

He's a recipe for diabetes if there ever was one - Jesus Christ!

Igneococcus · 09/04/2018 08:57

*Until I know what aspartame can do I don't want it.

We do know what it does. It's the most tested product out there. Snopes has some good information on it.*

Classical safety testing isn't the only thing to be concerned about though. I'm sure the cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, and whatever other results might all look fine and be within approved FAD and EFSA limits. But we have now used artificical sweeteners in increasing amounts for many years and there is no indication of lower obesity rates. So for whatever reason replacing sugar with NAS isn't working on a population level, it might well work for an individual with a good control of their overall diet. Why this is the case has probably many reasons. There are studies that show that people on diets including NAS eat more calories over a day than those on normal sugar. And there are more and more studies on the gut microbiome that show a shift away from what we now think constitutes a healthy gut when consuming NAS, as well as altered enzyme activities in some crucial enzymes, such as alkaline phosphatase.
As a tool to lower obesity and increase overall health in a population my prediction is that this sugar tax will backfire terribly.

So when I’m in a pub and am driving so want a coke does that mean I’ll be charged as much as it would cost to have a pint of beer? Or is it only in shops that they’ve hiked the price?
(I’ve not really checked it out as we don’t drink that sort of stuff very often - but I’m not a big alcohol drinker and I’ll be pissed off if I’m charged over the odds for being a bloody designated driver!)

PattiStanger · 09/04/2018 11:08

Lindsxxx - that's going to depend on the pub - they can choose whether to charge you more for a non diet drink but I'd be surprised if the price of a pint of coke was the same as a pint of beer. Vote with your feet if that's the case

PattiStanger · 09/04/2018 11:11

I grew up drinking squash with sugar in it, so did my DH and so have my DCs. We are ALL slim with good teeth

It sounds like you are suggesting that the individual experience of 2 people is more valid than evidence from the population as a whole - is that what you mean?

Queenofthedrivensnow · 09/04/2018 11:20

Sugar withdrawal shakes!? What the actual fuck!????

clarkl2 · 09/04/2018 11:26

Why on earth are you buying all that muck?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/04/2018 11:26

Some people might be sensitive to it and can't tolerate it, but it isn't just as dangerous and that has been proven time and time again.

It may not be dangerous but it's vile and ruins anything its added to.

I found out yesterday Belvoir have some reduced sugar drinks in their range and they don't contain sweeteners, just less sugar.

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 09/04/2018 11:32

Pink- you think it’s vile. People keep stating that as if it’s a fact. It doesn’t taste of anything to me- I don’t like sugary things and find real coke makes my teeth hum.

orangesmartieseggs · 09/04/2018 11:36

Why on earth are you buying all that muck?

Why on earth does it shock you that different people like different things? Hmm

orangesmartieseggs · 09/04/2018 11:37

It may not be dangerous but it's vile and ruins anything its added to.

That's your opinion though. I can't stand full-sugar coke unless I'm hungover. I just think it's really sickly and I don't find it thirst-quenching.

But I don't think other people are wrong for enjoying it.

Igneococcus · 09/04/2018 11:40

Pink- you think it’s vile. People keep stating that as if it’s a fact. It doesn’t taste of anything to me- I don’t like sugary things and find real coke makes my teeth hum.

I wonder if some people can't taste it, just how some people can't smell asparagus wee.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/04/2018 11:41

Yes, it is my opinion and that of many others going by this thread. I don't think anyone is wrong for liking diet drinks, I just don't want their choice being forced on me, which it is now. The problem is the manufacturers are taking away our choice. I don't want to drink sugar free crap, but nor do I want to drink water all the time.

They've always made sugar free drinks, so why not carry on making regular and sugar free and give us the choice?

BonsaiBear · 09/04/2018 11:41

If they would offset the cost of healthier foods that tend to be more expensive, using money from the sugar tax I'd be all for it.

orangesmartieseggs · 09/04/2018 11:48

It's not being forced upon you though? You can still choose to pay the extra to have the non-diet version.

ethelfleda · 09/04/2018 11:48

All of you saying that you don't drink full sugar soft drinks do you drink fruit juice, squash or diet versions? Or is it water only?

I drink mainly water. I love water. I didn't used to- it took me a while to get used to drinking it but now I feel odd if I don't.
I have about 2 cups of coffee a day too and the occasional glass of wine. Also drink herbal tea.
I think you can train your tastebuds off sugar if you choose to do so.

MaggieS41 · 09/04/2018 11:52

It amazes me that with all the information we have on sugar and artificial sweeteners that so many people choose to still stick their head in the sand. Yes you choose what you believe just like how back in the day when tobacco was considered good for you.... Sugar is addictive- that’s a fact. It can cause lots of problems such as diabetes. That’s another fact. Yes, there is so much in the world that is bad for you which takes effort to avoid. But if you get the shakes because you haven’t had your chocolate bar for example, then you have a problem! There are alternatives. Just don’t be so blasé ffs. And are kids being fed this shit as part of a staple diet?! I have to wonder...

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 09/04/2018 11:52

Just pay for the sugar version. It’s onky a feel pence more than it was

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 09/04/2018 11:53

What information Maggie? What medical evidence do you have that Artificial sweeteners are anything like tobacco?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/04/2018 11:57

It's not being forced upon you though? You can still choose to pay the extra to have the non-diet version.

It is when manfacturers are removing half the sugar in the regular version and replacing it with sweeteners. This has happened with Ribena, J2O, 7 Up, Sprite and others. I would willingly pay the extra but there is no choice now.

I don't particularly like Coke, but I'm thinking of trying it again just so I can have a drink when I'm out!

BarbaraofSevillle · 09/04/2018 11:58

just pay for the sugar version. It’s onky a feel pence more than it was

But with the exception of Coke and Pepsi there is no full sugar available any more. It's all got artifiicial sweeteners in, even some of the premium drinks like San Pellegrino. We're going to have scrutinise the labels of everything we buy in the hope of finding what we want, which in a lot of cases, doesn't exist.

Where possible, I'll just stick to alcohol instead and have half a lager instead of a soft drink if it's not a drinking occasion. I don't really like Coke and have given up with my previous go to non alcoholic pub drink of lime and soda because they all seemed to have sweeteners in that completely masked the lime taste and just made it bleugh. I did switch to blackcurrant and soda which seemed better, but probably no more.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 09/04/2018 12:03

When I was growing up we ALL drank squash with sugar in it and we sometimes had cream soda as a special treat. As my children have grown up I’ve found it harder and harder to find soft drinks for them that go to have artificial sweetener. If it is sugar in drinks causing the obesity problem then why weren’t we all obese in the 70s?

I don’t disagree that there is an obesity problem but the fattest people I know have been drinking diet drinks for years with no effect so surely it is something else making them fat.

If I drink these drinks with sweeteners I expect I WILL lose weight (although I don’t really need to) because of the diarrhoea.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 09/04/2018 12:06

That should be ...

I’ve found it harder and harder to find soft drinks for them that DON’T have artificial sweetener.

TammySwansonTwo · 09/04/2018 12:07

Saving the NHS money? Maybe not, because I now have to get expensive high carb / glucose drinks on prescription for my son to treat hypos when lucozade or Ribena would have done the job before recipes changed. Me and all the other people who have blood sugar issues.

But yeah, pump people full of artificial sweeteners instead. Why not?
