Answer the door

Put the bins out.

Go down to breakfast in someone’s house.

Go down to breakfast in a hotel

Early morning dog walk

Go to the shops.

Do the school run.

??

I would (and do!) do all except the last three because I am terminally lazy and rarely dressed before noon if I don’t have to be. AIBU and a dreadful skank?

Popc0rn Did/do they? Go round Asda any time of day in pjs, I mean? I wish I could. I love my pjs. I do the housework in them so as to keep my clothes clean then I take a shower and get dressed on days I'm able to do so. I chuck my pjs in the washing machine after wearing them for housework though.

When camping I used to wear thin track suit trousers and a tee shirt in bed so no one knew it was my pjs.

My last rushed trip into hospital made me buy new pjs and keep them at the ready, with suitable shoes for on the ward and wearing to come home. Nightmare asking someone else to get things I needed.

greeneyedlulu · 06/04/2018 18:22

First 2 are fine, 3rd depends on who else is about really and the others.... are you bonkers?

minniebirdy · 06/04/2018 18:31

The first 2 possibly the others definitely not. Breakfast in a hotel? I’d complain to
Management if I saw anyone do that.

Only the first 2

MiniMum97 · 06/04/2018 18:47

“The minute you open the front door and greet anyone who isn't your family, you should be dressed.”

Why? Who says? And technically you are dressed if you have PJs on. Please people think about this. Is it ok if I do down to breakfast in a hotel in my gym kit - hoodie and trackies, or in my pjs. Which look practically the same. What’s the difference and why does anyone care that my trackies may be black but perhaps if they are pale blue with flowers on suddenly not ok? It doesn’t make any logical sense at all! Just a weird and I think very outdated social convention. Years ago it wasn’t the done thing for ladies to show their ankles!

MiniMum97 · 06/04/2018 18:48

You’d complain to management if someone care to breakfast in their pjs! Why? How does it affect you? You really need to get a life!

RavenWings · 06/04/2018 18:51

Answer the door - acceptable

Put the bins out. - acceptable

Go down to breakfast in someone’s house - hmm, depends who it is.

Go down to breakfast in a hotel - no way

Early morning dog walk - absolutely not

I cut the grass wearing my pyjamas this morning, with a fleece over the top. I could see no good reason to get another set of clothes dirty when my pj's were due a wash, so I kept them on and then showered and dressed when I'd finished.

I only did the back garden though, I didn't quite have the nerve to venture out and do the front. A quick dash to the bin is one thing, but cutting the grass takes a fair bit longer.

LeeBee11 · 06/04/2018 19:07

I’d answer the door and I put my washing out also but with my dressing gown on. I wouldn’t dare go out in them. I’m in Yorkshire and I once saw a woman in pyjamas, dressing gown and slippers at a cash point at Tesco’s. Full on Lepard fluffy number 😀

GreenTulips · 06/04/2018 19:10

It doesn’t make any logical sense at all!

Do you go snorkeling in you best suit?
Do you go to the pub in a ball gown?

Different activities require different clothes - bed clothes are for bed

Makes perfect sense

hdh747 · 06/04/2018 19:40

Sometimes health considerations mean you have to choose to use the little bit of strength/energy you have to either feed yourself or get dressed. And that may be all you can do today. (google spoon theory and chronic illness if you can't get your head round that). Because you can't get out you have to do all your shopping online. So chances are you are going to be answering the door in your pjs a lot. At any time of day. Or putting a bin out if it's not too heavy etc.
And you don't have to be old or look ill for that to be the case. So it's wonderful to hear that not EVERYONE will assume you are grim and skanky.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 06/04/2018 19:53

I suspect the majority of folk answering door, shopping, school run etc in pj don’t have chronic debilitating physical conditions
so it’s a not a global slur on those with debilitating conditions who need to conserve energy when folk comment on pj as day attire

TheDowagerCuntess · 06/04/2018 20:06

It doesn’t make any logical sense at all!

How does getting dressed out of the clothes you've slept and sweated in for the night - to mix with the public - not make sense?!

Just get dressed.

Under your 'logic', you might as well stay in pyjamas all day. Yes, getting dressed into clothes for the day is a 'weird and very outdated convention'. Grin

FaveNumberIs2 · 06/04/2018 20:33

What’s acceptable in your pjs?

  1. Anything in your own home or garden.
  2. Anything in the privacy of your hotel room.
  3. Anything in the privacy of anyone’s home you are sleeping in.
hdh747 · 06/04/2018 20:41

I do wonder if people who find it socially unacceptable to see someone in pjs also find it socially unacceptable to see someone on a beach in a bikini, mankini or g string? The clothing might be fresh and clean but my word there can be a lot of sweaty bits out in public. Sorry but I have yet to find a mankini dignified in any scenario but that's just my preference and all power to you if you can rock one happily.

DinoSn0re · 06/04/2018 20:56

I don’t do any of those in my pyjamas. Even if we have a parcel delivery or something similar booked for a really early slot, I’ll just set my alarm and shower and dress before the arrival time. My husband will put the bins out and answer the door in his pyjamas though. It doesn’t bother me when other people do stuff in their pyjamas, I just get embarrassed being seen in mine!

Petitepamplemousse · 06/04/2018 21:21

I would never go down for breakfast in my PJs in a hotel etc but why on earth can’t people live and let live a bit more? Why is everyone so bothered? It can’t really be a cleanliness issue because when someone is wearing clothes you have NO idea how many wears they have had out of them. So someone may have worn their trousers three times but their PJs once. Therefore the PJs will be cleaner. Look, it isn’t something i’d do but can’t we all just relax about other’s choices? Essentially, who gives a monkeys what other people choose to wear? It’s so silly to be bothered.

stayathomer · 06/04/2018 21:22

April Fools day my kids pretended there was someone at the door and I nearly fell over trying to get clothes on. I wouldn't do any in my pjs! I just think it shows you didn't bother to make an effort if you leave the house in pjs, bins out at a push, but other than that I don't understand why people would go out in them. Mercian Queen spot on!

sleepylittlebunnies · 06/04/2018 21:30

I’m often in pyjamas at various times of the day as I work nights. I answer the door in them and put bins out but never go out in them. In hospital having inductions I’d walk around the maternity ward in pyjamas but never out in the corridor or cafeteria, maybe because I work there.

g1itterati · 06/04/2018 21:36

Nobody in their right mind goes shopping in pyjamas! I have never seen this in my life - anywhere. And who would consider going down to real fast in a hotel in a dressing gown? Grin Or the school run fgs!

If by pyjamas you mean loungewear, I guess you could put the bins out (quickly)! or take an emergency delivery. But you wouldn't go out in your lingerie, surely? I suppose you could put a long coat over the top, but why would you feel the need to do this? Is this a trend in some parts of the country because it's not one that's hit London at this time.

Shockers · 06/04/2018 21:44

I walk the dogs in mine in winter. I’d just put my waterproofs over the top. They’d go straight in the wash when I got home though.

My walk is 5:30-6:30am, so little chance of being outed as an outdoor pyjama wearer, as it’s pitch black.

Barbara1956 · 06/04/2018 22:26

None of them...felt really bad wearing pj,s and a dressing gown to answer the door of my hotel room for a room service breakfast....
Have seen some right sights when I have been back in Liverpool tho,Grin

Mikklehaha · 06/04/2018 23:18

I’ll never understand this. If you’re in public, is it really such a chore to get dressed? How lazy do you have to be to not be bothered to get dressed to go out? How self-indulgent have people become that they think getting dressed for the school run is somehow difficult. It’s about standards. People can set theirs where they will but they’ve no right to bitch about being judged.
