To ask how much you are paying for your Summer holiday?

How much do you/are you paying for your Summer holiday? What will you be doing? Abroad, UK, camping or hotel or cottage etc. How long for?

I just want to know if my holidays are very expensive.

The last few years we've been going to the same place and renting fab little cottages, the location is ideal for us and the places we've rented have been lovely, home from home.

A few people have been shocked at how much we've paid but I think they are kidding themselves to think you'd get equivalent in the school holidays for any less.

We're splashing out on a solid roof over our heads this year and staying in a cottage for four in Northumberland for a week in the summer hols for £440.

MozzchopsThirty · 04/04/2018 09:20

Really @Highhorse1981 have you been??
We have a jam packed week Smile

kaytee87 · 04/04/2018 09:20

Easter holiday £2500 plus about £700 spends, 1 week villa Canary Islands

Early Summer holiday £2000 plus probably £2200 spends, 2 weeks apartments cyprus

Late summer holiday £350 plus probably £500 spends (including diesel), 1 week campsite Norfolk

mindutopia · 04/04/2018 09:21

Maybe about £400 in food, drinks, petrol and days out. We have a cabin sort of in our extended family (3 br and lounge kitchen), but it’s kind of like a beach hut with no electricity or running water so like a holiday cottage but facilities are basic like camping. We all share it amongst about 40 family members. It’s our main holiday every summer. We don’t pay for it, just food and days out and petrol to get there. So probably £400 for 4 of us for 5 days? That’s pretty unusual though. Otherwise we usually also go camping for a weekend (but that’s like £20 a night). When we do have a proper holiday, it’s usually 4 nights in a holiday cottage in the UK which is usually no more than £400-500 plus food and days out.

We don’t do extravagant holidays but to be fair, we may go to Florida to visit family next winter. So flights would be probably £2000 or so, but we’d stay with my mum (who lives there) and eat with them and mostly use their annual passes for days out (like Disney). It would be prohibitively expensive to do a week or two in Florida otherwise.

I’m finding this thread really useful, if only to justify that we use all of our savings for holidays! This year we’ve got (what I hope is) a lovely 2 bed apartment just outside Tsilivi with a shared pool, hot tubs etc on a complex with 18 other apartments for £3k (2 adults and 2 kids) plus spending money. Got the flights for about £250 using avios. Currently trying to justify (to myself) an £8k plus holiday for 2019, so this thread is definitely going to help!

haverhill · 04/04/2018 09:24

Just about to have 3 nights Airbnb in Pembrokeshire. Our own flat near the sea for £130! Petrol probably £80 plus another £80 spending.
On the summer we usually spend about £500 on a cottage somewhere nice in Britain.
We are by no means hard up but could never spend £1000s on a holiday. No judgement; I certainly would if I could.

kaytee87 · 04/04/2018 09:24

Sorry should have said, we're a family of 2 adults plus and under 2 (so he's free) the first holiday was so expensive because we took mil & bil with us.

TheSconeOfStone · 04/04/2018 09:24

We desperately need to spend on the house this year but I do love to leave the country.

We’re doing a cheap Brittany ferries deal in half term. Static in S Brittany £500 including cabins for 5 nights. Pool and beach look great so hoping for a bit of sun.

Week camping in Pembrokeshire in August £200 and 4 nights near Malaga in October half term. The flights to Spain were nearly £800 for 4 on less popular days as we are going from our local airport. Will be worth it for lack of stress. I have no idea how people on MN find amazing flight bargains. I assume term time from London or large Northern airports. No competition down here in Devon.

Orangettes · 04/04/2018 09:25

I think we'll be doing a week long city break in Europe, kids will be wanting a pool, so I think it'll roughly come in at £3k. Only doing a week because we can't afford 2 weeks this year - would rather do one week and eat out loads than do 2 weeks with a tight budget.

randomthoughts · 04/04/2018 09:25

That’s for 2 weeks

OlafLovesAnna · 04/04/2018 09:26

We buy EasyJet flights to the cheapest 'warm' destination available, and do the European equivalent of Eurocamp.

Last year was flights to Stuttgart about £300 return flights for 5, then Vacansoleil mobile home in the Black Forest for a week at about £750, then a Youth Hostel in Bavaria for about £400 for 5 nights. We did hire a car for 2 weeks too for about £250. So £1700 all in for 5 minus spends.

The previous year it was cheaper as we didn't hire a car, flights to Venice £260, tent in Union Lido camping for about £1300 and buses if we wanted to travel.

It works for us but I'd say that if you've found the perfect holiday for you and can afford it then that's great.

Chrisinthemorning · 04/04/2018 09:26

10k for 4 adults and a 5 year old- 3 weeks in Florida- premium economy flights, villas with pool and hot tub, car hire, park tickets- in May
1600 for a week in Cyprus October half term, flights, 4 star hotel b&b- 2 adults and a 5 yr old

Jessikita · 04/04/2018 09:28

I’m going outside school holiday times as mine don’t go school yet. We’re 2 adults 2 children 4 and 2.

We’re going mid May to Turkey for 11 nights to a lovely hotel all inclusive. Was £1700 with Thomas Cook but I did book early. Plus spends.

We went Tenerife in Jan I booked that separate. Flights were originally £100 each with Monarch, but had to rebook with Ryanair so £150 each. Apartment was £420 through Holiday lettings, transfers were €25 each way so that was about £1100 for a week plus spends.

We’re going Benidorm in June but my Grandma is paying for flights, apartment and transfers for her 90th so not sure how much that will cost.

I love holidays as you’ve probably noticed.

Bearsinmotion · 04/04/2018 09:30

@Highh1981 you can’t sleep in beach huts can you? Because the DC would love that!

SweetSummerchild · 04/04/2018 09:32

October half term (so sort of summer - just).

One week at Center Parcs in Netherlands. Top rated 3-bed lodge. Skiiing lessons every day for 2 adult, 2 kids plus equipment hire.

£2,000.

Food and Shuttle willl be extra, but we’d have to eat if at home. We’ll probably take some food with us.

MattBerrysHair · 04/04/2018 09:36

£72.72 camping 2 nights in August in the Yorkshire Dales. 2 adults, 1 teenager, 2 primary aged children. We will borrow a tent from dsis. That's all we can afford this year as we are a very low income (working) family and we've had to pay for various repairs on the house over the last year.

Even when I was with exh and we were a 60k p/a household we still only spent 1k max on a holiday. I think we must have spent a lot of time and money on daytrips and eating out at the weekends so had nothing left for holidays abroad. Exh was crap with money!

PinkFlamingo888 · 04/04/2018 09:39

Shaming people for spending ‘too much’ of their own money is just as bad as looking down on someone who doesn’t have very much. Just let people holiday how they please! There is a reason why the Balearic Islands are so expensive, especially in school holidays and that’s because it’s so convenient and by far the preferred destination for families. Why would you take children all the way to Hong Kong just to save a few £100?

MrsPreston11 · 04/04/2018 09:39

Family of 4.

About £1k for a week at the coast in a lovely conversion.

And £8200 for a fortnight in a 5* at Disney World, that included a few hundred dollars giftcard and our food. (Giftcard will cover the tips) We don't tend to go too crazy buying stuff so maybe spend £500-700 while there.

PinkFlamingo888 · 04/04/2018 09:41

But no holiday for us this year as we’re buying a house instead. But that will be way better than a holiday! We are also lucky to have family in Cornwall and France so we may get a little trip away and hopefully the sun will shine!

BitchQueen90 · 04/04/2018 09:43

£1600 for myself and DS for a week beach holiday in Europe. 5 star hotel with breakfast. Will take about £500 spending money.

MollyDaydream · 04/04/2018 09:45

We do an abroad holiday maybe once every 3 years, Butlins/Haven via Sun Holidays in between.
This year is Eurocamp, 2 weeks in June, about £1k, two adults three children.

SnowiestMountain · 04/04/2018 09:46

£2K for 9 days in Fuerteventura in June, 2 adults & 2 x DC's

IMissGin · 04/04/2018 09:52

£3k for 2 weeks AI in kos, very beginning of Scottish summer hols. 2adults, 1 child, 1baby, probably £1k additional spends.

CoffeAndCream · 04/04/2018 10:03

A family of 4 here, two weeks in Tenerife in August.
Booked flights very early £970, detached villa in a rural area with private pool £650, car hire £250.

We will mostly cook for ourselves, one child has special needs and so it suits us better. I enjoy cooking on holiday (as long as I have wine).

kaytee87 · 04/04/2018 10:06

Why not go to China? Or US? Or Middle East?

Umm not everyone wants to go on long haul holidays, especially with small children.
