Help got a situation in Tenerife!

This isn't aibu but I'm needing help and know I will get a high response here.

Basically we are in Tenerife ( costa adeje ) for a week. Myself, dh and ds ( 6 )

Now I know I'm probably going to get flamed here but my ds has got a bit of sunburn along his shoulders and is feeling miserable, cold and shivery. I feel awful. I did the usual things, factor 50 on at all times and reapplied regularly, hat on even in the pool, had a tshirt on in the pool for most of the time, loads to drink etc. We have been to Turkey in double this heat and he was fine with the same measures.

Basically what I'm asking is if anyone knows this area and can recommend stuff to do in the relative shade and not involving water. We have already been to Jungle Park which would have been ideal today.

I don't need judged just helpful advice please.

The UV index for Tenerife is 10/11 today. It will hit 6 in Nice tomorrow and London might reach 3.

So the UV radiation is significantly higher in Tenerife. The Met Office classifies UV at 11 as extreme and it is unlikely to ever be reached in the UK because of our latitude.

I didn't say that it was similar to here though did I.Hmm It isn't so high that factor 50 won't prevent sunburn if applied adequately though. I don't know how fair you are but I doubt that you are as fair as me and considering that I have never been sunburned in my adult life (I am over 50) despite visiting places like Tenerife many times I don't really need your advice..

So have I, the only time I have ever got sunstroke was in London and I've travelled a lot in properly hot countries

specialsubject · 04/04/2018 11:32

Probably because you stopped paying attention in London! Also the buildings there are grossrly overheated and the modern ones are badly designed so the place is disgusting in warm weather.

Sigh - just because you haven't burnt doesn't mean that people won't burn if outside at the hottest part of the day in an area with high UV despite wearing Factor 50. I am not advising you Hmm I am saying your advice might not work for everyone.

The strength of the sun in places like Tenerife is misleading because you can have high UV even though temperatures are not uncomfortably hot.

Dungeon is one of those people that always has to be right. Even when they don't know what they're talking about.

Too many assumptions, including that you are fairer than everyone else on this thread.

Admittedly I don't generally go out in midday but I have on the odd occasion in places with high UV radiation. I always need a hat but with that and factor 50 I have never burned. If other do they are either fairer than me (not many people are) or not applying it often or thickly enough or there is something wrong with the sun tan lotion e.g. it is out of date.

I didn't assume. I said that I doubt that the poster was fairer than me. That is because I am very very blonde and fair skinned - few people are fairer and if you met me I doubt that you would think I was ignorant on how not to burn.

BusyBeez99 · 05/04/2018 21:57

We always use factor 30 in Tenerife and none of us burn. We do keep re applying though and are careful when walking about town to wear sun screen. Factor 15 once and i got burnt
