Help got a situation in Tenerife!

This isn't aibu but I'm needing help and know I will get a high response here.

Basically we are in Tenerife ( costa adeje ) for a week. Myself, dh and ds ( 6 )

Now I know I'm probably going to get flamed here but my ds has got a bit of sunburn along his shoulders and is feeling miserable, cold and shivery. I feel awful. I did the usual things, factor 50 on at all times and reapplied regularly, hat on even in the pool, had a tshirt on in the pool for most of the time, loads to drink etc. We have been to Turkey in double this heat and he was fine with the same measures.

Basically what I'm asking is if anyone knows this area and can recommend stuff to do in the relative shade and not involving water. We have already been to Jungle Park which would have been ideal today.

I don't need judged just helpful advice please.

OP posts:

had a tshirt on in the pool for most of the time,

Do you mean an ordinary cotton t shirt or one that has UV protection?

Callamia · 01/04/2018 09:14

Hold on - I reread that essential oil advice, I think it’s not about putting plain essential oil on a burn. Sorry. Stand down hysteria.

willdoitinaminute · 01/04/2018 09:14

Could he have picked up a cold on the flight over?

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 01/04/2018 09:17

of course go and see a doctor, he's only 6 he must be miserable.

Parrothead · 01/04/2018 09:20

Comedy Boobs I like your hashtag, but I would change it to
#anotherdickishresponsefromflouncy

FlouncyDoves has been. consistently nasty on all kinds of threads. She is clearly either the first completely perfect human specimen or a saddo who gets pleasure from making others feel bad. Actually, a perfect human wouldn’t be so bitchy all the time, so it must be the latter.

DinahMo · 01/04/2018 09:21

Don’t put any kind of oil/greasy stuff on any kind of burn! I know it’s a popular folk remedy, and may help the burn feel more comfortable initially but covering a burn in oil can actually ‘seal in’ the heat allowing damage to continue under the skin. Cooling, and keeping cool, is the most important thing.

OP I agree with others if your son is suffering with chills then this is severe, especially for a young child, and warrants medical assessment, please ask your hotel/travel insurance to help you see a doctor today.

AllNamesTakenhell · 01/04/2018 09:22

Sounds like heat exhaustion to me op. You might be best off keeping him inside, cool and hydrated. Get some rehydration sachets down him.

orangesmartieseggs · 01/04/2018 09:24

He needs to see a doctor.

And no activities for 24-48 hours. He must be feeling miserable and he needs to rest not be dragged out anywhere.

AllNamesTakenhell · 01/04/2018 09:25

The best thing for burns is water, as much as possible to cool the skin. I would call the emergency gp if he is still ill.

user1471529986 · 01/04/2018 09:28

My parents live there and they all use the pharmacy as a first point for most things. We did when our sun was reacting badly to suncream our there so I would try them first maybe

DancingLedge · 01/04/2018 09:30

Read actual medical advice about sunburn and shivering www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/guide/sunburn

LadyLapsang · 01/04/2018 09:32

Given his age I would get a doctor to have a look. Keep him well hydrated and have a restful day in your hotel - this is the time for stories, videos, lego etc. Don't put essential oil on it, even if it is diluted. Is the burn dry or open, ie. has the skin blistered or broken? You haven't got the air con turned up too high have you?

hungryhippo90 · 01/04/2018 09:32

OP, have him seen, sounds like it could be heatstroke- but could be anything.
If he's burned have a look for some aftersun that has lidocaine in it, completely removes any soreness- I missed my neck with the sunscreen in Florida and looked like a crab- slight sting when sprayed but after that it felt like heaven!

But please do have him looked at incase he has heatstroke.

Keep him well hydrated, in the shade. If you have calpol or nurofen, do give these to him if he has a fever, as they'll help to regulate his temperature. Don't give him drinks that are too cold, it'll just impair his bodies ability to regulate his temperature more.

If you can, get a digital thermometer to keep an eye on things.

Keep him out of the sun for the next few days.

Jux · 01/04/2018 09:33

Hope you've found a gp and your ds has been checked and you'ree clear on treatment. Sunstroke is nasty and can take quite a while to ffully recover from.

MrsJoshDun · 01/04/2018 09:34

If you’re in costa Adeje there’s a hospital up near the dual carriageway if you want to get him checked over. Or maybe speak to one of the chemists?

Veterinari · 01/04/2018 09:35

Missingstreetlife please don’t attempt to give medical advice when you’re not qualified or experienced. Putting oil in a burn is one of the worst things you can do - it seals in the heat and makes the burn worse.

You’re right in that moisturising the skin after the burn has settled will help with peeling and irritation but oil shouldn’t be applied to an active burn

JustDanceAddict · 01/04/2018 09:38

Def needs to be seen due to shivering etc. Ask in the hotel or nearest pharmacy.
My kids have had a bit of burn, sometimes it just happens, but if they were shivery and unwell I’d be going to get medical advice. You could put natural yoghurt on the burn, or aloe gel or frozen peas wrapped in tea towel. Not sure I’d do the peas if he’s shivering but the yoghurt and aloe should be ok.

mumto2teenagers · 01/04/2018 09:40

I would take him to a pharmacy, they will either be able to take a look and advise whether he needs to see a doctor.

Is there anything indoors in the hotel, kids club, etc? I would keep him indoors and see how he feels before going out.

YellowFlower201 · 01/04/2018 09:42

Sounds like heatstroke. Keep him inside and encourage him to drink. Try to keep an eye on his temperature too.

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/04/2018 09:42

Was it an old bottle of factor 50? Perhaps the potency has reduced. Hopefully you’ve got a tablet and can watch some tv. I think your ds should rest until he feels better, not go out. I hope you’ve managed to see a gp.

I had sunstroke when I was travelling and it really was miserable. I had to lie in an air conditioned room not moving for at least a day. I was supposed to see a world wonder but was too unwell to leave the hotel. I was really upset at the time and if I’d have been able to go I would have done. I’d be very surprised if he’s up for doing anything touristy if he’s shivery etc.

flippyfloppyflower · 01/04/2018 09:43

I agree with everyone that you should not beat yourself up over this. These things happen. I had heat stroke about your son's age and survived to tell the tale. Smile Seriously though you do need to keep him in the shade, quiet, hydrated and another one suggesting a pharmacist as the first step and then a Doctor if needs be. Flowers to you and yours

Ellenripleysalienbaby · 01/04/2018 09:46

I'm not really one for bothering with the docs, especially on holiday, but in this situation I actually would. I imagine in Costa Adeje there are medical centres with English speaking doctors who will have seen this before. The hotel should be able to point you in the right direction.

Hope he is OK x
