Help got a situation in Tenerife!

This isn't aibu but I'm needing help and know I will get a high response here.

Basically we are in Tenerife ( costa adeje ) for a week. Myself, dh and ds ( 6 )

Now I know I'm probably going to get flamed here but my ds has got a bit of sunburn along his shoulders and is feeling miserable, cold and shivery. I feel awful. I did the usual things, factor 50 on at all times and reapplied regularly, hat on even in the pool, had a tshirt on in the pool for most of the time, loads to drink etc. We have been to Turkey in double this heat and he was fine with the same measures.

Basically what I'm asking is if anyone knows this area and can recommend stuff to do in the relative shade and not involving water. We have already been to Jungle Park which would have been ideal today.

I don't need judged just helpful advice please.

*because. Don’t know what happened there.

PNGirl · 01/04/2018 10:03

I do. You were so desperate to heap scorn on the OP you had a #fail yourself.

babycham75 · 01/04/2018 10:04

What a prick.
Crawl back under your stone, if you have one.

PNGirl · 01/04/2018 10:04

Anyway, definitely recommend the pharmacy. They will either recommend something or be able to direct you to a Dr.

Oblomov18 · 01/04/2018 10:05

Hope he's better by now. We had to take Ds1 to a doctor in Golf Del Sur last summer for an ear infection and they were great. Apparently I've since read, they generally are fab in Tenerife.

DarkPeakScouter · 01/04/2018 10:05

Take him to the doctor. We always hope they’ll come right but it sounds like medical advice and a lie down in the hotel room would be best.

Certcert · 01/04/2018 10:07

Neglectful parenting is fine, apparently

Of course it isn't fine but the damage is done and OP needs advice, not berating.

Is that difficult to understand?

Kotare · 01/04/2018 10:08

What brand of sunscreen was it? There have been a few reports down under of factor 50 which just doesn't work: www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/nivea-actively-working-solve-issues-recently-reformulated-sunscreen-after-customers-say-didnt-work

Might be worth replacing whatever you are using and a trip to a pharmacy.

Hope he feels better soon.

I had terrible heat stroke in Mexico. The kind where you shiver and feel sick but your skin is on fire. I remember getting under the covers and couldn't let the sheets touch my skin else I'd shiver even more. I didn't go to tea, had blisters on my legs and I just fell to sleep for 12 hours, felt much better the next day but refused to go in the sun after that.

I realise how lucky I was for it not to have needed much worse.

Idontdowindows · 01/04/2018 10:18

Neglectful parenting is fine, apparently

Yeah, cause applying sunscreen dilligently is a parenting fail..... (rolleyes)

Allyg1185 · 01/04/2018 10:22

Ok thanks I'll try to answer some questions.

It was niveva factor 50 bought a week before coming from Asda.

Yes a swim tshirt and had suncream on under it. Reapplied when taken off.

Turned ac down as even i found it to cold and was even off during the night.

Been to chemist she advised a cream ( looks alot like bepanthan but more of a lotion rather than greasy ) and piriton type medicine. She didn't think he needed a dr.

We are in the room for the day hes watching a film on his tablet. Hes perked up alot and is happily munching on some crisps. I wasn't planning on dragging him out I was just looking for ideas if he perked up and wanted out for a bit.

Thanks everyone for your advice

We always use cold tea to reduce redness and pain. Tea bag in cup, no milk and sugar, let it go cold. Apply to skin. Let it dry. I have been known to stand in a bath pouring it over myself. Yes it’s messy, but it really helps. You’ll be surprised how it works. It restores the ph balance to the skin. Think raw tomatoes do the same thing, 😀

Loro parque up north? A day trip to La Gomera with a ferry from Los Cristianos? Can you walk with an open umbrella ?

Glad your son is feeling better and won't need medical attention. I am however including hospital info in case someone ends up here one day needing help in Tenerife.

Quiron is private hospital and won't accept your EU health card, anyone needing an hospital in Costa Adele should go to Hospiten Sur in Playa las Americas and for very serious things, the best hospital is the Hospital Universitario La Candelaria. So if someone has a stroke for example or suspect stroke go straight at La Candelabra .
In Adeje village, there is a medical centre, but most of the time they will send you to hospital unless you go there for chest infection, otitis, etc...

KingIrving · 01/04/2018 11:00

La Candelaria , not La candelabra, auto-correct sorry

Troels · 01/04/2018 11:03

Aww poor little boy. Glad the pharmacy was able to help.
We lived in the sun and this has happened to us twice, doesn't help that my boys had a bit of red to their hair so burned easily.
I used to put rash guard shirts on them and try to get into the shade between 11 and 4. Still one ended up with a doctor visit, and daily dressings for a week to his shoulders. We used to buy Aloe vera in a spray bottle that also had some Lidocaine in it, it worked great if they looked even slightly pink in the evening.

turnipfarmers · 01/04/2018 11:08

hope he's ok soon. I'd get him to a gp as well with the shivering.

HappyEverIftar · 01/04/2018 11:21

Nothing really to add OP except to say I had the worst sunburn when I went to Tenerife, despite doing what you'd done for your son. The relative coolness, as opposed to other, hotter, places as you've described, can catch you off guard. You have my sympathy.

NurseP · 01/04/2018 11:25

Sounds like all under control now OP. Hope the lad makes a speedy recovery and you can enjoy the rest of your holiday.

mintich · 01/04/2018 11:33

Remember the sun is strong in Tenerife, but as it is so exposed and windy, you can think it's weaker than other places as it feels cooler. I always see a lot of severely sunburnt people in the Canaries and I think that's why!

SuburbanCrofter · 01/04/2018 11:35

Kotare's link is interesting. I would keep the bottle and return it to Nivea for testing when you get home OP. Sunscreen that isn't working is downright dangerous.

Madbengalmum · 01/04/2018 11:39

There are lots of good medical centres in your area, very professional and clean. I would get him seen, the docs there are better than uk IMHO?
As for indoor activities take the free el cortes ingles bus to santa cruz for the day. Siam mall, play area, cinema?

TheJoyOfSox · 01/04/2018 11:43

Yoghurt. Apply natural yoghurt to the burnt areas, it should give some relief.
