Help got a situation in Tenerife!

This isn't aibu but I'm needing help and know I will get a high response here.

Basically we are in Tenerife ( costa adeje ) for a week. Myself, dh and ds ( 6 )

Now I know I'm probably going to get flamed here but my ds has got a bit of sunburn along his shoulders and is feeling miserable, cold and shivery. I feel awful. I did the usual things, factor 50 on at all times and reapplied regularly, hat on even in the pool, had a tshirt on in the pool for most of the time, loads to drink etc. We have been to Turkey in double this heat and he was fine with the same measures.

Basically what I'm asking is if anyone knows this area and can recommend stuff to do in the relative shade and not involving water. We have already been to Jungle Park which would have been ideal today.

I don't need judged just helpful advice please.

Op has got proper medical advice, fortunate given some of the idiocy on here.

The canaries are of course just off Africa and it is spring. Regardless of temperature UV will be very strong.

Ijustwantabloodyusername · 01/04/2018 22:01

Great news OP. Please don't give yourself a hard time over this.

I hope you all manage to enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Footle · 02/04/2018 09:26

Off topic, but must wave to JoyOfSox as that's one of my favourite books.

Frazzled2207 · 02/04/2018 12:47

Pleased he is feeling better. I have had sunstroke myself and it was horrid, but relatively shortlived.

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 02/04/2018 13:38

If people get told off for their already admitted mistakes on here they will never ask for advice and that would be a real shame.

LizzieDarcy1907 · 02/04/2018 17:48

Wet towel round the shoulders should help take the sting out. Lots of paracetamol and no more sun for the rest of the holiday.

Timefortea99 · 02/04/2018 17:49

I have had sunstroke a couple of times when I was a kid and we (parents) didn’t’ know any better. You do feel awful, but as long as it it is not too bad, bounce back is quick if you hug the shade, take plenty of fluids and don’t do too much running around. Sounds like he is on the mend.

ManicUnicorn · 02/04/2018 18:06

Nivea sun cream is rubbish. I know people who have burned right through it.

BikeRunSki · 02/04/2018 18:08

That is heatstroke. He needs mrficL attention (i’m a first aider).

Thisisharderthaniexpected · 02/04/2018 18:09

Does that make a difference now?

Thisisharderthaniexpected · 02/04/2018 18:10

Sorry - replied to the wrong post. Glad that he is feeling better!

Lacucuracha · 02/04/2018 18:11

Seaworld would be fun. He can watch the killer whales and dolphins in the shade, and go to the Aquarium.

(Seaworld have committed to having no more killer whales after the current batch).

FaveNumberIs2 · 02/04/2018 18:30

Stay in, until your son feels better. If you can, cover the affected area with cling film (obviously not his whole body/face and seek medical attention to make sure he’s not got sun stroke.

londonrach · 02/04/2018 18:36

Please take him to gp. Keep him inside for at least 24 hours with lots of liquids. Poor mite. Must be feeling awful

Godowneasy · 02/04/2018 19:18

I'd seek medical advice too.

Natural yoghurt is wonderful for soothing sun burn. Apply very liberally to the burn areas and leave on. Reapply when necessary. Very messy and unsightly but it is soothing.

Do get medical advice though, as they can fully assess the severity of the burns and treat accordingly.

sashadasher · 02/04/2018 21:14

OP you sound a really sensible person and hope your ds is well asap X

nonamesleftatall · 02/04/2018 23:03

I just wanted to say don't feel bad and I hear what you are saying.

I am a sun lover and we do hot like Thailand, Florida, Eygpt... But Tenerife is an odd heat as it feels shady and grey but as it is really close to the equator the sun is super strong. We fell in to this trap.

I would say stay in for a day. Make a fuss of him with taking ice lollies treats etc.. play games top trumps, Uno we usually bring and just cover up tomorrow X

MrsC2012x · 03/04/2018 00:02

I don’t know the area, but have you tried sudocream, when I was a teen and abroad I sunburnt so bad I couldn’t sit down (stubborn I wont burn teenager) and it cleared it up over night x

worrierandwine · 03/04/2018 07:21

I got sunstroke at about 10 I think and felt like absolute crap for 24 hrs. We were in France and I was in the sea jumping waves all day, it happens really easily. Also, we went to Gran Canaria in June last year and I found the sun VERY powerful and some other couples we spoke to said the same. Temp supposed to be around 27 but felt much MUCH hotter, I was petrified of the kids burning and was applying factor 50 like a nutter! I don’t think we’ll do canaries again until they’re much older as the experience, quite literally, burned me!

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 03/04/2018 07:23

I had sunstroke once and I had terrible head ache and had to sleep it off

Bed rest , calpol , and he should be Ok in a few days

Starlighter · 03/04/2018 09:52

My dd got burnt using factor 50 Nivea! It’s rubbish! We’re going to the canaries next month, I’m worried now! Will be looking into suncreams. She’s got such sensitive skin and eczema, it’s tricky finding something that works.

sirlee66 · 03/04/2018 10:01

How did he get burnt with all that protection!? No judging at all, just want to avoid for my DS this summer!!

All I can suggest is shade throughout the day for DS and like PP have said, sudocream (kept in the fridge for a cooling effect?) Have a lovely rest of your holiday! Very jealous of the heat - it's freezing here!!

Looneytune253 · 03/04/2018 10:02

Aloe Vera is pretty amazing. Brought instant relief last time me dh and teen got burned.

Cutesbabasmummy · 03/04/2018 10:04

Neat Lavender oil is ok on a burn. But this sounds like more than sunburn to me. I got very badly burned in Florida when I was 7 and I had huge blisters all over my shoulders. But apart from being very sore I didn't feel unwell in myself. Id' see a GP if possible x

Dungeondragon15 · 03/04/2018 10:21

Considering it is not that hot yet, I am sceptical that he has sunstroke. I would have thought more likely that he has caught a virus. I would keep him in the shade though he feels better and the sunburn has gone though. Also, is the sun tan lotion an old bottle as if you have genuinely been applying factor 50 religiously he shouldn't have got sunburned.
