The thread continues....if it hasn't continued elsewhere! @Lateforall it was me who questioned Lobella loves depression wears lippy campaign. I get that the idea is that being a bit glam might be a way of coping. And i have been guilty of putting my face on to carry on in the world. I get that not everyone with pnd is sat at home in pjs unshowered with greasy hair. But I just find the whole thing so false on her account - maybe that is because I know of her in real life.

But I think so many of them have massivley over exaggerated aspects of their lives because it sells. Whether that is FODs clumsy parenting or whatever. But it really doesnt sit well

I'm interested to know why some feel that accounts should be saying how lucky they are to receive stuff, it's so arrogant not to etc.
If it's their income, their business, why should they feel they have to justify themselves and what they do?

CadyHeron · 01/04/2018 11:17

You're right jellifrey, it's essentially the same and nothing's been done wrong there.

Mumofkids · 01/04/2018 11:18

@jelliefrey it's a class response though! Made me chuckle!

PavlovaPrincess · 01/04/2018 11:26

@Jelliefrey well, I agree on that magazines should be held to the same standards but this topic is about Instamums in particular.

I don't really read print magazines much anymore so I've nothing really to say about that. MP made a good point on the other thread about how print mags are closing down so brands are turning to influencers as alternative means of advertising. But imo, the difference is the magazine isn't particularly endorsing the product and the ads are clearly marked.

Yes, there are reviews like books etc. but I think in that case they're allowed to give their opinion, whereas MOD isn't really reviewing the hotel is she? I very much doubt destionolgy have sent her on a 20 grand holiday and said that if she thinks the food or hotel is shit, then please make your followers aware of the fact. It's ad, pure and simple.

CadyHeron · 01/04/2018 11:28

It is an ad, pure and simple, yes. And all the pictures of it are clearly marked as such.

Adgirl2018 · 01/04/2018 11:34

I would say if in doubt assume it is an ad and watch/enjoy the content in that context. A thank you for a gift is a thank you if done directly and privately. A public thank you is an ad in my opinion.
The thing is people are blasé about advertising because traditionally they’ve had the luxury of not caring. Someone has already done the caring for them. So as a consumer they’re protected even if they don’t realise it or even think of it. It’s just kind of taken for granted that people are playing fair and to me this is what it’s all about. Just playing fair and following the guidelines.
I have no issue with ads (especially given my background) or accounts evolving, being a business or making money. But given the nature of influencer advertising, I think it’s more important than ever to give the consumer the protection they’re owed. Especially as they may not realise they’re actually a consumer at all in this environment.
I enjoy Instagram and unfollow when the content isn’t my cup of tea any more. But I’d still like to think we can get to a place where everyone is following the rules consistently without just being told to look away. It’s in everyone’s interest. The person following the rules is going to have a very different looking account to the person not following them. A choice between an ad filled feed and non ad filled feed is unlikely to go the ad heavy accounts way. But actually both might be flogging equally.
It’s an interesting debate for sure.

PavlovaPrincess · 01/04/2018 11:34

@CadyHeron I'm not quite sure how many times one person can completely and spectacularly miss the point.

It's almost like you aren't really reading or comprehending any of the posts and aren't actually quite sure what a discussion is.

This is probably the last time I'm going to respond you. It's a waste of time, otherwise.

Mumofkids · 01/04/2018 11:35

@pavlova agreed! It's a rubbish review. Few pics posing, tour of a dark accommodation on stories. She'd do better to not answer like that if she wants to appear like a decent person and get more review opportunities!

CadyHeron · 01/04/2018 11:38

pavlova - likewise because the only thing you post apart from insults is utter drivel that is easily contested and I think that's where your problem lies with me. You don't like being pulled up or questioned or interested in any actual discussion at all.

MadameGrizzly · 01/04/2018 11:40

A lot of instagrammers are hiding behind the phrase 'paid content' so don't feel payment in kind, such as gifts and hospitality, need to be disclosed - which is really treating your audience like idiots. I've only very recently seen affiliate links tagged despite disclosure being mandatory.

I see a brand agency has commented MN are too harsh as we 'just don't understand!'

I think we understand perfectly: advertising has been democraticised and brands no longer need to fork out for expensive print media or television advertisingas influencer marketing is cheap and effective. But influencer marketing relies upon relationships and audiences want to know when recommendations are paid advertising.

Choose not to disclose due to a narrow interpretation of the law and audiences may become disgruntled, complain on social media, boycott products, unfollow, discuss the instagrammer in chat groups and closed forums, or start Instamums thread 5642 on MN.

CLTS and FashionLift are probably genuinely lovely people but their business compliance stinks.

PavlovaPrincess · 01/04/2018 11:43

@cadyheron you aren't pulling me up on anything.

Where in my post did I say MOD hadn't marked it as an ad? You're really good at c&p so please do so.

I was replying to jellie saying that MOD has been quoted as reviewing the hotel. It's not a review as she won't be allowed to give an honest opinion. It's an ad and clearly marked as such.

Now go away, you're boring me. You aren't the voice of reason on this thread. You're just someone who doesn't quite understand what everyone else is talking about.

LaPampa · 01/04/2018 11:44

The wording of MoD “reviewing it for you” may be accurate but is that what her audience actually is asking for? I would have not added the “for you” bit so as not to sound tone deaf.

Bedrethan is not super expensive when you add what you get for the money -we’ve paid to stay there & I wouldn’t have thought it was outside DLAM’s budget. I would be surprised if they (Bedruthan) had gifted a trip over Easter weekend when they are entirely full of paying guests. I certainly have tagged the hotel on my own IG when we have been paying guests so as to avoid my few followers asking me where I am. It’s a lovely hotel, great location, great facilities and definitely worth paying for not just going as a freebie.

NotASingleDamnBiroInTheHouse · 01/04/2018 11:44

Howling at the 'I'm on a freebie holiday reviewing it for you. YOU'RE WELCOME' comment from MOD.

Who the fuck can afford a week in St Lucia for four people over Easter holidays apart from very rich people?

Is that who she thinks follows her? Only the very rich? Do they not use Google analytics or anything?

And also, she sucks at reviewing holidays. I just had a look and there's nothing useful about the food, the resort, the facilities, the accommodation, the activities or anything. Just pics of her sister with booze.

MadameGrizzly · 01/04/2018 11:46

It might actually have been you, Jelliefrey, on IG saying MN doesn't understand?

Print media doesn't build the same intimate, trusting relationship with its audience that an influencer does. Influencing is a new marketing medium so different standards of disclosure need to apply.

NotASingleDamnBiroInTheHouse · 01/04/2018 11:51

Still cracking up at the idea that going on a free Caribbean holiday is somehow doing everyone a favour.

MadameGrizzly · 01/04/2018 11:52

But you know, MOD's sister looks HAPPY, Biro, so it's all good, hun. x

CadyHeron · 01/04/2018 11:53

kind of a bit of irony in that last dig fling, pavlova. Quite interested in the discussion between influencers, reach, tactics etc myself so I'll stay thanks.

Sofialemon · 01/04/2018 11:53

@Pavlova

I'm fully aware of the ASA, they're not really doing a very good job at cracking down on it are they?

Maybe if all you complainers on here reported each and every instance of suspected none disclosure to them they would do something? Or perhaps whilst there are guidelines there are also loopholes and it's all not so straightforward.

HolyMountain · 01/04/2018 11:54

Mod will be back soon, bemoaning the state of the house and the dishwasher not being unloaded, #missingStLuciaalready.

PavlovaPrincess · 01/04/2018 11:54

@NotASingleDamnBiroInTheHouse it's interesting how many 'likes' that comment received though. Think it was 500+ the last time I looked a few people rushing in to defend MOD.

No wonder these threads on MN are still going.

PavlovaPrincess · 01/04/2018 11:56

Cady still waiting on your block C&P showing me where you're pulling me up.

CadyHeron · 01/04/2018 11:56

NotASingle I follow quite a few people with expensive stuff on their feeds, because I like to see how the other half live and get an insight into their world Grin
It's a kind of escapism, an "ahh, that looks good" type thing.
So not always about only rich people liking.

I wish there was the ability to "like" on Mumsnet, it would save loads if time.

MadameGrizzly · 01/04/2018 11:58

I think more than one person has said they have started reporting, Sofia?

A shame that ASA 'intervention' would never be made public - because that would be interesting content.

Mumofkids · 01/04/2018 12:05

@Biro love it! It is hilarious and some people on this thread just need to lighten up!
