To be furious about these ‘hot cross buns’

I’m watching what I eat at the moment and managed to resist all the Easter eggs at the supermarket, however I picked up a pack of four hot cross buns resolving to make them my one and only Easter treat. Imagine my fury and disgust to find that they are in fact chocolate chip and salted caramel hot cross buns! - I like chocolate, I like genuine salted caramel and I like hot cross buns. The combination of all those things, especially with the ‘salted caramel’ clearly being a horrible synthetic flavouring, is so disgusting that I’ve had to throw them all away. Except for the one that I ate to be completely sure that it was definitely disgusting.

I got caught out in our local bakery last year with chocolate chip ones (no salted caramel thankfully). I'm still traumatised.

I interrogated the staff before I bought any this year. Apparently, they are just doing normal ones this year. Obviously more than me traumatised by them.

They were giving these away as samples in Tesco this afternoon. I nearly spat it on the floor. I could see any normal ones on the shelf. Good job I've got a supply in the freezer.

YANBU! I must have had a mad moment and tried Tesco Mango, Pineapple and Papaya ones - they were truly revolting!

Yanbu OP, I am so totally over salted caramel! It's in bloody everything now - I love cheesecake, it's in that, I love hot chocolate it's in that and now it's ruining our hot cross buns! Please please food industry, find something else to be the "flavour of the year!" I'm done!

These are fab for my daughter. She used to love hot cross buns but we discovered she is fructose intolerant so she cannot eat dried fruit. These are perfect for her! (Although saying that I haven't actually double checked they don't have fructose in somewhere.....)

YABU. I don't like normal hot cross buns - not sweet enough, and hate sultanas/raisins/whatever is in them. The salted caramel and choc chip ones with real butter are lush! Also like the blueberry and maple syrup, and going to try the very berry ones tomorrow. Even dad (a dried in the wool normal HCB fan) likes the blueberry ones. I wouldn't be so brave as to try the chai and seed ones though, or the mango and pineapple!

YABU. Currants and Sultanas are absolutely vile so I don't normally bother with hot cross buns. Chocolate and caramel ones are lush! I had one earlier, toasted and with lashings of butter. Gorgeous!

YABU! I keep buying the toffee and chocolate ones from Tesco and they are delicious. I’m slightly obsessed.

They are not proper hot cross buns, I agree.

However, I have been forced - forced! - to buy a pack of Sainsbury's mini chocolate chip ones. They just looked so cute.

Also, DS1 has ASD and loves the idea of hot cross buns, but wouldn't go near proper ones if you offered him a million pounds. He might deign to try the chocolate ones, although probably not.

OH NO oh dear that is terrible. I haven't had a hot cross bun, are they nice? I want an easter egg, haven't had one of those either, might buy one tomorrow.

Yuk, that’s a crime against taste. I do wish the ‘salted caramel’ thing would disappear into the same black hole that sundried tomatoes disappeared to. It’s almost as upsetting as finding cherries in a scone. My DH came home last week with salted caramel pretzels. What was he thinking?!

I'm so excited. I hate raisins and sultanas so I've always been left out of the Hot Cross Bun tradition. Now I can join in too. Yay! I hope there are some left in Tesco. :D

There are probably plenty left Tringley - went into Waitrose today - no PROPER hot cross buns left - plenty of crappy berry, orange, chocolate, wholemeal ones left but not one Easter hot cross bun at all...
