To be furious about these ‘hot cross buns’

I’m watching what I eat at the moment and managed to resist all the Easter eggs at the supermarket, however I picked up a pack of four hot cross buns resolving to make them my one and only Easter treat. Imagine my fury and disgust to find that they are in fact chocolate chip and salted caramel hot cross buns! - I like chocolate, I like genuine salted caramel and I like hot cross buns. The combination of all those things, especially with the ‘salted caramel’ clearly being a horrible synthetic flavouring, is so disgusting that I’ve had to throw them all away. Except for the one that I ate to be completely sure that it was definitely disgusting.

I've just finished a Morrison's chocolate hot cross bun, god they're bladdy delicious 😋

Bluelady · 30/03/2018 14:53

The M&S apple ones are my favourites.

Redglitter · 30/03/2018 14:54

The salted caramel & chocolate ones are gorgeous. I just bought a pack in M&S today

AaronPurrSir · 30/03/2018 14:55

YABU. Those ones are my faves.

Raisins/sultanas (same thing) are revolting.

theredjellybean · 30/03/2018 14:59

ASDA today had 'fudge hotcross buns'

i wept....

MiddleAgedMe · 30/03/2018 15:19

Excellent comedy @Starchime22....deffo made me lol :)

pigsDOfly · 30/03/2018 15:22

But these buns containing chocolate and stuff aren't hot cross buns are they? They're chocolate/fudge/salted caramel or whatever buns. Why aren't marketed as such.

Perhaps that was the problem when certain pie companies started putting horse meat in their pies and continued to market them as beef pies.

Perhaps they didn't realise that they should be clearer about what they were selling. If they had labelled them as horse pies perhaps people wouldn't have bought them thinking they were getting beef and everyone would have been happy to get cheap horse pies.

In the same way if the buns that the OP bought hadn't been labelled 'Hot cross buns' she wouldn't have picked them up not realising she was buying something entirely different and inferior and she wouldn't now be sitting at home all unhappy with her useless buns in the bin.

EinsteinsArousedSausagesHCB · 30/03/2018 15:32

Pigs, they are labelled as salted caramel and chocolate chip Hot Cross Buns though, not simply as 'hot cross buns'.

CarrieBradshawsScrunchie · 30/03/2018 15:38

I read the thread. Went to tescos as planned to buy NORMAL hot cross buns. Picked up two packets and came home with them. Halved one and put it in the toaster (thinking there wasn’t much fruit in it), then DD pointed out I’d bought the bloody buggering choc chip and salted caramel ones!!!!!!!

Luckily I quite like them.

PasstheStarmix · 30/03/2018 15:40

I made my own Easter cakes as at least then I know what goes into it as the stuff in the supermarket is disgusting! You’re not being unreasonable!

PasstheStarmix · 30/03/2018 15:41

I sampled the choc ones last year and never again, they are disgusting and went in the bin...it’s so wrong

CarrieBradshawsScrunchie · 30/03/2018 15:44

The good thing is they’re quite sickly so I don’t want the other half!

thegreatbeyond · 30/03/2018 15:44

Jesus help us all. I myself tried the apple and cinnamon Tesco Finest hot cross buns this week. I tried one, and then felt it my Christian duty to eat them all, simply to protect my children from Satan's temptations.

PasstheStarmix · 30/03/2018 15:46

Good on you @thegreatbeyond for doing the dc such a service. Wink

pigsDOfly · 30/03/2018 15:50

Yes Einstein I realise they are label with the ingredient and aren't sold as straightforward 'hot cross buns' - my post above was using a bit of poetic licence - but they are sold with the regular hot cross buns and label as hot cross buns.

A hot cross bun has up until very recently has been flavoured only with cinnamon, mixed spice and nutmeg. Traditionally they have not been mucked about by putting chocolate and such like in them.

Therefore, this newer product is not actually a hot cross bun. It's a chocolate bun.

pigsDOfly · 30/03/2018 15:55

Don't know why I've typed label twice when I meant labelled.

Helmetbymidnight · 30/03/2018 15:55

@thegreatbeyond. There should be medals for people like you, going way over and above the call of duty there.

CarrieBradshawsScrunchie · 30/03/2018 15:56

Their labelling and product placement is designed to deceive, to be honest. I just picked up two packs from the nearest front corner in the main entrance. I never noticed the minuscule blue stickers. There must be millions of us - millions! - who have been duped in this terrible way.

HelenaDove · 30/03/2018 15:58

the great beyond I like those................and the blueberry and maple syrup ones.

PasstheStarmix · 30/03/2018 15:59

@CarrieBradshawsScrunchie you should take them back and don’t let them get away with it...these supermarkets are deliberately deceptive I think.

peacheachpearplum · 30/03/2018 16:00

I forgot to buy hot cross buns. I blame this thread for me going out and buying 6 of them and it will be your fault when I eat them all. It's nothing to do with me.

PasstheStarmix · 30/03/2018 16:02

@peacheachpearplum try toasting a couple for breakfast with a little butter on (may lesson the guilt) Hmm

TooManyHappyMeals · 30/03/2018 16:02

I have bought these disgusting feckers 3 times now! THREE TIMES! They are not labelled clearly enough, nowhere close to clear. Angry

TSSDNCOP · 30/03/2018 16:02

It would literally ruin my Easter if I was duped in such a way as to buy a Jonny come lately new fangled ingredient Hot + bun.

All you with your fecking "read the label" bollocks. I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO. A Hot + bun is sultanas and a bit of spicy stuff I don't know. I don't NEED to know. I have worried all day about this.

Luckily I sent DH and he spoke to the nice man in Sainsbo and that is what I got.

lazymum99 · 30/03/2018 16:04

Just came home from supermarket with a packet of hot X buns for tea. Need to check them immediately. Those you got sound delicious. I hope i've bought them by mistake. although mine are from sainsburys and don't know if they do those posh ones.
