To be furious about these ‘hot cross buns’

I’m watching what I eat at the moment and managed to resist all the Easter eggs at the supermarket, however I picked up a pack of four hot cross buns resolving to make them my one and only Easter treat. Imagine my fury and disgust to find that they are in fact chocolate chip and salted caramel hot cross buns! - I like chocolate, I like genuine salted caramel and I like hot cross buns. The combination of all those things, especially with the ‘salted caramel’ clearly being a horrible synthetic flavouring, is so disgusting that I’ve had to throw them all away. Except for the one that I ate to be completely sure that it was definitely disgusting.

I also forgot to buy any when I last went shopping a couple of days ago, which is probably why I seem over invested in this thread.

I’ve decided that actually they are revolting and I’ve had to eat two chocolate brownie bites to take the taste away. You know, I even picked up the packets and exclaimed ‘oooh they’re all lovely and warm’ to my DD. Now I just feel like a fool.

The Waitrose HCBs are divine. Taste just how a HCB should. Was completely sold on M&S buns until I discovered the Waitrose ones. Already salivating quietly to myself remembering I have two left for tomorrow morning. In fact may eat them now and go and get more.

Have you tried Waitrose chocolate orange ones??? They are amazing.

Waitrose mini chocolate orange HCBs are food of the gods. Sadly the last 3 Waitroses I have visited had none. Sob.

First, ordinary HCBs are disgusting, filled as they are with the devil’s rabbit droppings. Secondly, I can’t have them after having to cut carbs right down due to GD and “pre” diabetes. To have even one chocolate and salted caramel bad boy would be amazing right now. Waaaah!

I bought Waitrose wholemeal HCB today, feeling really quite virtuous as obviously these a practically a health food. Unfortunately they required half a pack of butter to make them edible so it didn’t work out too well, really.

imagine craving just a mouthful of sweet sweet carbs and having to go for yet another piece of cheese or handful of salty peanuts instead..... woe is me!!!

I am waiting on a delivery of Tesco Finest Toffee, Fudge and Chocolate Hot Cross Buns. They are the only variant of Hot Cross Buns that I have ever liked, and I'll be disappointed if I don't get them. I like that I'm finally on the Hot Cross Bun train - even if some of you aren't willing to accept it

So do they also have the hot cross bun flavour too?

I don't like hot cross buns so Iv ignored the other types thinking that they are hot cross buns bit with other stuff added is that not right then?

I've just finished a homemade one.....much better than the shop ones. No choc chips, salted caramel or anything else. .seven more left.

So far we’ve tried the Booths normal ones and their chocolate and fudge ones (very sticky), Waitrose normal ones and the cherry ones, Aldi’s Cranberry & orange, M&S marmalade ones and the salted caramel ones will be opened tomorrow but I’m feeling nervous now - what if I hate them?

I’m going to Sainsbury’s tomorrow but am fighting the urge to pop back to Waitrose as their normal ones were my favourites.

@peacheachpearplum try toasting a couple for breakfast with a little butter on (may lesson the guilt) They might not last that long

Yes I can see that they're not clearly are obviously labelled.

I nearly picked these up too, luckily I was awake enough to read the label.
Dh wasn't as fortunate and now has two packets of them to eat as nobody else likes salted caramel.
There are all sorts of flavours, I found Blueberry ones in Tesco.

tesco had packs of their good HCB two for a pound this am. Who would have thought a freezer could hold so many........

I didn't grow up in the UK so not invested in this but DH agrees with you. But he heard on Radio Four sultana prices have risen due to weather issues!

Best ones are Waitrose Bramley apple and sultana.

It's a sign of our times OP, sadly everything is over-processed,heavily flavoured, and laden with sugar and fat. Even yoghurts are assaulted with salted caramel flavourings.

Don’t buy the sainsburys Belgian choc one’s unless you effectively want chocolate brioche with a cross on it - they were totally tasteless and not even particularly good chocolate bits.

I fed then to the kids.

Totally agree OP. I hate any variations on the traditional hot cross bun and think they shouldn't be messed with.

I feel the same about flavoured "Cider" surely its not cider once its blackcurrant flavour or whatever

YABU hot cross buns are awful unless they are made with chocolate/fudge/caramel. Those 'traditional' varieties made with raisins dead flies taste awful but maybe the point of them is to make you suffer while eating 🤔

Been to waitrose and bought choc/orange, apple and normal ones. Yum
