to think that people should shut up about their bank charges? You incurred the charges, so pay up.

honestly, i've got a friend who just got £5500 back and he's off on holiday with the proceeds.

he's absolutely USELESS with money and knowingly incurred all teh charges, so why exactly does he deserve to get the money back? it's not a bloody savings account he's been paying into...

Aitch, we went on holiday to a fab SC cottage in Perthshire that was pretty cheap last year if you want I can give you the name of the place.

This year we're going to Nairn, again SC.

Pretty inexpensive.

expatinscotland · 10/05/2007 12:03

DH to DD1, 'We're going on holiday in Scotland and if that's no' good enough for you that's tough.'

They are entirely unfair. Last week my bank attempted to pay a direct debit out of my 'bills' account three days early, they charged me £38 for the direct debit failing, and £38 for going overdrawn because they had charged me the first fine.
I called and told then it was wholly unfair, and my branch manager called me back and refunded it the same day.

Manictigger · 10/05/2007 12:37

Aitch, surely if your friend has run up such high charges he must also owe huge amounts of interest, in which case surely he'll still be out of pocket? (I'm assuming that charging interest on money owed is legal and separate to the charge issue) Who is being stupid, me or him?

(And I think after all the help you've given people on here with weaning, a free session with a MN lawyer is the least you deserve )

So maybe Aitch's friend shouldn't feel quite so smug?

kimberleyl1985 · 10/05/2007 12:59

I stumbled over all of you very clued-up people this morning after another 45minute conversation regarding a 3month complaint with Barclays - still not resolved - & I want to take them to the cleaners ...has anyone got a letter template for requesting my last 6years statements without them trying to charge me for them??? I'd be most grateful x

Manictigger · 10/05/2007 13:11

Kimberley - moneysavingexpert.com have some letter templates for this sort of thing, you'll have to check whether or not they will be suitable for your situation. If you can't find the site look on the Radio2/Jeremy Vine show site for Martin Lewis, it's usually on there somewhere.

kimberleyl1985 · 10/05/2007 13:14

Thanks manic - does this actually work? I don't know whether I want to reclaim my millions of charges or actually do physical harm to the damn money sharks!!!

Manictigger · 10/05/2007 13:21

Do you mean does the link work or does claiming the money back work? Claiming the money back (assuming you have been mischarged) def does work. We used the template on that site to claim back some of the redemption fee we were illegally charged when we moved our mortgage and Abbey paid up with no problem at all (if banks know they're definitely in the wrong they do tend to, just to avoid going to court).

madamez · 10/05/2007 14:53

Aitch: for your friend to be getting a big chunk of money back, he must have endured some serious anxiety and stress and financial difficulty at times in the past six years, due to the bank overcharging him. It's not that unreasonable of him to run off at the mouth in relief, really.

americantrish · 10/05/2007 15:02

i'd say you're being unreasonable. banks have been unfairly charging people and they are finally being forced into paying it back.

although £5500 in fines is a LOT. we're only thinking we've been fined a few hundred, if that in the last 4 years...

Stigaloid · 10/05/2007 15:09

Kimberly

money saving expert

(Scroll down to letter template) It sayss they can not charge you more than £10 for this service so pop a cheque in the post with your letter and state that you are enclosing teh £10 charge for this service and expect a speedy response.

Good luck

kimberleyl1985 · 10/05/2007 15:43

Thanks Stigaloid - i've copied the letters & saved them. £5,500 isn't alot in charges - I requested that all standing orders & direct debits from 1 of my accounts be cancelled & after 3 months & about 4hours worth of telephone calls (each month the DD's etc would still be debitted even though I was ASSURED that they had been removed & each person I spoke to would apologise for the previous person) they cancelled them Friday - I have accrued over £1,700 worth of charges since February!!! I can't even begin to imagine how many times i've been messed about by them!

AitchTwoOh · 10/05/2007 16:30

manic, thank you. i will comfort myself with the fact that he had lost out on the interest he would have gained had his money been in a savings account. and if he'd just stop referring to this as his 'savings account' that would be easier.
expat, that would be great, deffo send us the cottage details. i've been looking into camping as i feel bad that dd has never been on hol and all her pals have been round the world (that's the NCT for ya!) problem woth holidays for us is that both being self-employed if we go away for a fortnight (pah!) our wages for the month are halved...
anyway, enough of this, it was meant to be a bit more light-hearted than it turned out! enjoy your cashback bonuses, you lucky bastards!

OP posts:
Manictigger · 10/05/2007 16:54

Aitch, comfort yourself with the thought that he's mad as a box of frogs - have you ever heard of a savings account where YOU pay them interest?

p.s. if you were going for a pizza at lunchtime tomorrow would you let your lo (8 ms) have a bit of pizza or would you stick to salad etc? (I'm sure you must be fed up of being collared for BLW whenever you appear on a thread but.....)

AitchTwoOh · 10/05/2007 17:09

deffo go for the pizza, salad is yuck. taste it first though, and see if it's terribly salty. although tbh i don't let that bother me soooo much.

Ta

fannyannie · 10/05/2007 17:21

my DH would be without his job if he didn't have a car and he doesn't get a company one.....

Manictigger · 10/05/2007 17:23

What?!

fannyannie · 10/05/2007 17:26

was that directed at me??? The "what!"???? confused**

Manictigger · 10/05/2007 17:27

Ah sorry, Fannyannie, for one moment I thought maybe you'd posted on the wrong thread but then I looked back through it. It's quite long isn't it?

fannyannie · 10/05/2007 17:28

nope - was referring to a post a few posts back saying that a car was a luxury.......wish it was bain of our sodding life with the stupid car finance company but DH's job too good to give up (and he'd never get anything in the local town that paid the same anyhow LOL).

Blondilocks · 11/05/2007 19:14

I need my car too. If I didn't have it I'd be seriously limited to where I could work & would end up spending thousands (I'm not exaggerating) on train fares!
