honestly, i've got a friend who just got £5500 back and he's off on holiday with the proceeds.

he's absolutely USELESS with money and knowingly incurred all teh charges, so why exactly does he deserve to get the money back? it's not a bloody savings account he's been paying into...

Ahem ... that was a touch aggressive, shiny.

suejonez · 09/05/2007 13:14

my mum made a mistake on her online banking and tried to transfer £6,000 instead of £600. The transfer caused her to overdraw which they charged her £50 for then they immiatedly bounced te transfer (because there wasn't enough funds) and charged her £50 for that. She tried to argue but they wouldn't even discuss it (at the time) £100 for a moment of dippiness and a 30 second overdraft .

I have now given her the information to try to claim a chunk of it back.

FiveFingeredFiend · 09/05/2007 13:14

and another thing. I bet its the poorer sections of society that get most screwed becuase they can't afford a payment for a loan this month becuase the car broke down and they decided that the fan belt needed fixing urgently sot hey could get to work and had to decide not to pay the loan this month. or lose their job. Or some such life event that could easily happen to any of us.

the loan company then send a letter " you missed your £60 this month we charge you an admin fee of £30 ( yes they do) then the bank send a letter £ your DD ..insufficient funds,....£35"

I bet my first grandchild that the poorer sections of society dont have the knowledge helop and support to claim back their bank charges.

Nice your friend could go on holiday. I know people who have never left their council estate. Where going to Chester Zoo was a lifetime experience.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 09/05/2007 13:14

Bollocks MissGolightly... it's not stealing... it's how they make their money!! Banks are a business not a money box! They WANT us to incur charges.. if we all joined the Ivory Tower brigade they'd be pretty f*cked from a profit point of view!

They also have a RIGHT to charge us.. but less than twelve pounds a time!

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 09/05/2007 13:16

Assertive maybe rabbleraiser. I get really narked about people who judge the financial situations of others and tar them all with the same brush.

dionnelorraine · 09/05/2007 13:16

Im gonna claim my charge back! I could do with a good holiday or 2!!

rabbleraiser · 09/05/2007 13:17

Yep, and I get narky when I'm accused of living in an ivory tower when it's a council flat made of concrete .

MrMariella · 09/05/2007 13:17

Sorry Aitch. You are a BAD customer, as the bank may only make a limited amount of money out of you, by re-investing your balance elsewhere.

AND we won't be losing free banking overthis..the amounts involved are PIFFLING compared to normal bank business, but..they may well use it as an excuse to screw more money out of you when free banking does go.

twinsetandpearls · 09/05/2007 13:18

claiming back bank chrages is the closestI have got to a saving scheme!

MissGolightly · 09/05/2007 13:18

Darn it, I've got to go and get DS from nursery. Please don't throw all the popcorn before I get back?

What about when you pay a cheque in and it bounces, you get charged even though its not your fault

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 09/05/2007 13:20

Your ivory tower is entirely of the moral variety rabbleraiser!

Well done indeed for managing your modest funds with such efficiency. That's great, honestly.. but please don't judge those who, for whatever reason, have not managed it so well. Or indeed suggest that the banks be allowed to take the piss out of them by charging them unlawful amounts of money for the pleasure of having their business.

People dont always incur the charges- for example SWEB (a few eyars back) took the same bill three times over, and neither the bank nor SWEB would pay the charges, then when we couldn't afford to clear that bill more little charges built up- tis the way these things happen. When WTC system vroke down and didnt pay us for 2 months last year it cost us £250 in charges, we managed to get £150 of that back (the rest was incuurred between complaining and receipt iykwim).

A lot of the system seems to compound bad luck- for example if you get amde redundant or go sick suddenty, they claim they dont ahve time to cancel DD's / pay you the insurance you had with them, and you are liabe to incur the charges then, which mount up as if you're on a low income and £35 for one DD is cahrges you still need to eat one way or the other.

I agree poeple should be liable for their charges, but within eason and they shouldn't be able to make multiple charges on one thing- if DH is chrged £30 for using his acrd when he's broke (again the WTC situation) he also gets charged overdrawn fee, interest on that etc.

niceglasses · 09/05/2007 13:24

I wouldn't feel to sorry for the banks. If they really had a leg to stand on, they wouldn't be paying up. None of them have even got to court yet - you can rest assured they would if they thought they would win? And why wouldn't they win? Cos its daylight robbery.

Have you heard the profits they routinely make?

Good luck to anyone who claims them back I say, and very very good luck if you get a holiday out of it! Way to go!

rabbleraiser · 09/05/2007 13:24

Bye, Shiny. I really can't be bothered.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 09/05/2007 13:24

When claiming back bank charges, you get to reclaim the whole amount of charges (rather than subtracting £12 off each charge and claiming the rest) as a punishment for them over charging you in the first place! And they HAVE to pay! (They call it "goodwill" but they still have to pay.. and if you don't accept their "goodwil" offer and take it to the small claims court, they will end up having to pay you the whole amount of charges.. they don't have a legal leg to stand on.. they must be sick as parrots. Serve them right!)

QueenofBleach · 09/05/2007 13:25

Unfortunately my DH got charged £90 because a cheque from a client bounced, so it's not just those who can't manage their own money who are effected but others who rely on paymenst for work done.

FeelingOldnGrey · 09/05/2007 13:26

Due to reasons I shant go into, but are perfectly vaid, I went £6.00 over my overraft facility as money did not go into my account as it should have. I was charged £30, then £28 for being over overdraft limit, DDs that would have been paid if the original money had been in my a/c in the first place were not honoured, more charges. All this time I could do nothing about it as I was not aware. The money not going into my a/c was their fault.

I incurred £450 worth of charges within a very short period of time for going £6.00, and no money with which to visit a dying relative (luckily I got the money which should have been paid in, in cash from the person it was from originally to pay for this and to hell with the overdraft).
I have incurred also, approx £600 in bank charges over the last 5 years, my fault.

However, as they refused to refund a penny due to their own error/my personal misfortune (its called life and it happens to us all) I am going to claim it all back. I had not considered claiming it before now, but now I am doing it, and closing my account with them, and going to another scummy bank instead. Or I might put it all under my mattress.

They are fraudsters, immoral criminals who deserve to lose every penny they will lose by behaving so appallingly.

PeachyChocolateEClair · 09/05/2007 13:26

I acn't claim my charges and neither can DH , we got a dodgy credit rating (not a real issue as we dont use credit) with the whole WTC thing and if we claim the bank threatened to close our account (well mine, nat West, as I am linked to Dh I find it hard to get another- HSBC said no on that basis and its only them or Nat West here).
